Egyptian protesters scale US Embassy wall in Cairo

CAIRO (AP) — Egyptian protesters, largely ultraconservative Islamists, climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday, made their way into the courtyard and brought down the flag, replacing it with a black flag with an Islamic inscription to protest a film attacking Islam's prophet, Muhammad.

Hundreds of protesters marched to the embassy in downtown Cairo, gathering outside its walls and chanting against the movie, which was reportedly produced in the United States.

"Say it, don't fear: Their ambassador must leave," the crowd chanted.

Dozens of protesters then scaled the embassy walls, took down the flag from a pole in the courtyard and brought it back to the crowd outside. The crowd tried to burn it, but failing that, tore it apart. The protesters on the wall then raised on the flagpole a black flag with the Muslim declaration of faith on it, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is his prophet." The flag, similar to the banner used by al-Qaida, is commonly used by ultraconservatives around the region.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. was working with Egyptian authorities to try to restore order.....

Well that didn’t take long. Obama will say he is better than Bush because he doesn’t rise to any such provocation and better than Carter because he has fireproof flags.

“ultraconservative Islamists”

Ever notice how the MSM always characterizes violent extremists and enemies of the U.S. as “conservatives”?

During the cold war Reagan Administration officials were called “right wing kooks”, “the weird fringe” and “extremists”. Hard line communists who favored war and other aggressive action against the U. S. were called “conservatives”.

After 9/11, Hamas and other violent, America hating groups were called “conservative Muslims”.

TODAY:..... “An Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that Netanyahu’s aides had asked for a meeting when he visits the United Nations this month, and “the White House has got back to us and said it appears a meeting is not possible. It said that the president’s schedule will not permit that”.”.....

I hope the Marines on the ground are familiar with the story of Rocky Sickmann. He was a young Marine at the embassy in Tehran when it was overrun. I heard an interview with him a few years ago. He stated that he was armed with a shotgun when the radical stormed through the doors, and he followed orders to not shoot. He feels that his (and his fellow Marines) failure to shoot was ultimately what forged the image of the US as a paper tiger in the islamic world, and extrapolated that the lack of any response in Tehran is what ultimately led to 9/11.

In the interview I heard, Sickmann said he would trade everything, his kids, grandkids, career, etc. to be able to go back to that day and pull the trigger.

Why weren’t the first “protestors” shot as soon as they made it over the wall?

Isn’t this a huge security breach? What if one (or more) of these “protestors” had a bomb strapped to themselves that detonated once inside the compound?

This is another attack by Islamists on U.S. Soil. Are you listening, Mr. Obama? An attack on U.S. soil !!

Why did you not order the Marines to use some of their gazillion rounds of bullets to defend our turf?

Oh, that’s right, the embassy prolly wasn’t on the recipient list for any of the gazillion bullets, they are intended for something or someone else.

What would you do, Mr. Obama, if Americans stormed the Egyptian embassy and tore down their flag and raised Old Glory?

According to the article, they sent most everyone home because they knew about the upcoming “protest.”

...............”About 20 people stood on top of the embassy wall, while about 2,000 protesters gathered outside. The demonstrators were mainly supporters of Islamist groups or “ultras” youths.

Rafik Farouk, 38, an Egyptian Christian, also took part. “I am here because I am Egyptian and reject anything that insults Islam or anything that sparks division in Egypt,” he said.

Washington has a big mission in Egypt, partly because of a huge aid programme that followed Egypt’s signing of a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. The United States gives $1.3 billion to Egypt’s military each year and offers the nation other aid.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland in Washington said the wall was breached and the flag removed.

“We are obviously working with Egyptian security to try to restore order at the embassy and to work with them to try to get the situation under control,” she said.

Following the protest, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it was committed to giving all embassies the necessary protection.

The U.S. embassy had put out a statement earlier on Tuesday condemning “misguided individuals” who hurt the religious feelings of Muslims or followers of other religions.

“We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others,” the U.S. embassy said in its statement.”................

Thanks.

Guess it makes sense - if we don't care about our sovereignty in the CONUS, why should we care about it at our embassies.
