Violence plaguing Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, left 27 people dead, 20 wounded and several houses burned down in a 48-hour period.
A federal spokesman in Mexico, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, attributed the violence to an an internal fight between organized criminal organizations.
The spokesman told media that since Saturday, weve counted 18 dead and about 20 wounded.
He said events began Friday at the intersection of Marcial Cavazos and Canales streets when people inside a pickup and another vehicle engaged in a gunfight.
The spokesman said that during the chase, drivers ignored stop signs and traffic lights and disregarded other motorists and pedestrians, forcing motorists to stop and those walking to hit the ground, seeking protection from gunfire.
Witnesses reportedly told investigators the situation was scary, the spokesman said.
Violence continued Saturday, the source said, with the burning down of three houses.
In one incident, a family of three people died inside their residence, he said.
Gunfights were reported in several neighborhoods including Infonavit, Campestre and Viveros, among others.
On Sunday, a shooting was reported on Peru Avenue between Yucatan and Monterrey streets.
There were nine deaths, the spokesman said. Apparently they were annihilating a well-known gang.
The spokesman said he was not authorized to identify the gang.
Families living in the colonias affected by gunfights stayed inside to avoid becoming targets, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the Nuevo Laredo Fire Department reported eight house fires over the weekend.
We are still investigating the cause of the fire, a fire department official said, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. Administrators will discuss the matter later.
In the past week, 39 people have died in what appears to be cartel-related violence.

They keep this up they are gonna beat out Chicago.
Just another beautiful, peaceful day in the neighborhood. Coming soon to Texas.
...27 people dead, 20 wounded and several houses burned down in a 48-hour period.Apropos of nothing, Alice Cooper used to do a Halloween show in Detroit.
It's a genuine United Nations of carnage.
Any guess as to how many of Eric Holder’s walking guns were involved?
They are trying !
Any guess as to how many of Eric Holders walking guns were involved?
A worthy question, indeed, though I'd guess an even worthier question would be whether the DEA-backed narcotistas won or lost.
And...I don’t mind..do you????
Seal the border, deport all the illegals, kill the Mexican Drug Cartels.
Any person or politician who is not committed to this is pretty much aiding and abetting the Drug Cartels
I cant do very much about it. Gangs killing gangs in Mexico? They can have at it.
Blacks killing blacks in Chicago? They have made it pretty clear that they just want to be left alone to their business.
Either one of them bring that $hit to my neighborhood better be careful.
This week there was a jailbreak just up the river in Piedras Negras, across from Eagle Pass.
Inside job. Over a 100 escaped and again, Texas is having to stand guard on the border because the feds won’t.
This week I saw billboards in the valley for a website called “Laredo is safe”. It is from the city of Laredo trying to quell fears of the gunbattles and all.
Isn’t it something that an American city has to advertise that they are safe to get people to come there?
New Orleans doesn’t even do that.
