Conventional wisdom would have it that some middle- and lower-income whites in the South might be prejudiced against voting for a black man for president. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll confirms that is true. But in a perverse kind of good fortune for the nations first African American president, the survey shows that this group of Southern whites has an even bigger block against voting for a candidate who is Mormon or who they consider very wealthy.
-snip-
Exemplifying the odd constellation of prejudice for some in the region, Reuters reporter Margot Roosevelt told the story of a 52-year-old white woman from Lynchburg who after voting twice for George W. Bush is ready to support President Obama this fall.
Sheryl Harris believes Obama is a Muslim, but also thinks Democrats are more in touch with those who have less. She said she will vote for Obama, adding: "At least he wasn't brought up filthy rich."

(I didn’t make that headline, LA Times did - ducking)
It’s probably true, but of course it has been widely known for decades.
Liberals think anyone who is not “one of them” is automatically a bigot and stupid.
They are projecting their own prejudices upon others in fly-over country.
Trust me , Romney will win every Southern State and that includes Florida
Yeah, Obama should spend a whole lot of money campaigning down here. He might actually flip GA, MS, AR, SC and Texas with this sort of talk!
You bet...like my evangelical daughter who is 25 and has NEVER voted before (my shame she doesn’t have the fire in the belly for politics) BUT this year because she is a nurdse (gerontolgy— doing home based care) and does NOT want Ocare to continue she has registered and is getting her friends to register AND VOTE.
Oh yeah she lives in Canton Georgia....stupid LA Times
I agree. Also, I didn’t know Obama was middle-class and Baptist. I thought he was a rich worshipper of the state.
NO and NO
This has NOTHING to do with mormons, it has everything to do with mormonISM.
Christians are not apposed to mormons they are apposed to mormonISM which is blasphemy against the Word of God Almighty.
mormonISM is not Christianity.
Christianity is God’s Word, mormonISM is Joseph Smith’s words.
“Everyone” knows we in the South only have two teeth, live in vacant boxcars and are the only people in the nation that can be openly discriminated against.
(check out Col. Frances Rice’s “Open Letter to the Democratic Party”—she’s a black woman who takes the dems to task for their bigotry.)

Which southern state is Romney going to lose? Mississippi? Ha! Alabama? Sure. NC, no way. VA, it is not looking that way and if he loses VA it will be because of government workers in NOVA not Southern bigoted Christians.
If this is true, do Southerners and Evangelicals who feel this way really think that the Godless, proabortion, anti-traditional marriage freaks that run the Democratic Party are going to do better to preserve traditional Christian values in society? If so, that is really stupid. Better a Mormon with a healthy family life than a nominal Christian worshipper at the feet of a racist, hatemongering black liberation theologist like Reverend Wright.
Find it odd that the “social conservatives” are so bothered by Romney’s Mormonism are not the least bothered by 0bama’s demonstrated militant secular humanism.
Odd that the same posters so upset about Romney have utterly no problem actively campaigning around here for Obama who not only openly advocates for gay marriage but also favors tax payer funded Abortion on demand up-to birth.
She looks like a “straight-razor-totin’ woman.”
Apologies to Tony Joe White.
That judgment is in God’s hands, not ours. Try reading Jacques Maritain’s beautiful essay “Who Is My Neighbor?” Oops, never mind. He’s . . . .shhhhh! . . . Catholic!

I got an e-mail today with a picture of a biker from the back. His vest read “I support the Mormon - not the moron”. That’s what Southerners will do.
Bush was as rich as Romney, and it sure didn’t hurt him in the South.
A lot of people in the South think 0bama at worst is a Muslim and at best an anti-Christian. They will vote for a Mormon any day over the first two.
Well which is it? African or American can’t be both? Sure wish they would just settle on one place for his birth.
Is the LA Times EVER in my lifetime going to release that Rashid Khalidi tape...Ive been waiting four years my patience is running thin
I thought liberals were against the rich!
I don’t believe the headline. Sure, you can find some who will express those sentiments, but a heck of a lot of southern whites were ready to support Herman Cain until his woman troubles surfaced. And Allen West is well regarded all around the South and in Tea Party circles.
I think with a great majority of Southerners now, political philosophy and specific issues would be the determining factors.
That isn't even close to true, not anywhere near true.
Somebody save that headline. Journ-o-Crime Hall of fame material right there.
Guilty!
(And FAT, too.)
I loath liberalism.
obama needs to go, I just wish it wasn't Romney doing the going.
Romney is a liberal. I loath liberalism.

You aren’t even responding to people’s posts, you merely recognize a name and spam them with one of your canned responses. A form of stalking.
You need to start posting something more relevant to the thread, and to individual posts.
Read post 28 again.
In Virginia if Goode (Constitution Party) gets 2 or 3% of the vote, it could hurt Romney. A lot of women of both parties were upset when the VA Republicans tried to legislate “forcible vaginal penetration” for sonograms in cases where women contemplated abortion. For those who don’t know, sonograms can be gotten by placing sensors on surface skin.
The last 4 years are the only time in my life my personal financial picture has gotten worse in every way. Obama has actively made a bad fiscal situation worse with his policies.
We simply cannot afford 4 more years of this.
I figured our net worth the other day, we have lost 60%, since the day obama was elected.
Romney makes me sick to my stomach none the less.
Actually I am, you just don’t like what you are hearing so you would rather censor it then have to think about it.
No you have been spamming me on multiple threads with cut and paste insults, while ignoring my posts.
Do you care to correct my post 28 for example, or do you agree with it?
Ah yes the standard response to those who find the truth inconvenient. Scream bile at the truth teller
Not a chance in hell.
I notice that is something else you do later in the thread when you attack the person you are stalking, you start posting to post post number 1, rather than to the posters actual post, yet you only ping the poster that you are attacking.
Don’t personalize your postings here.
You still not have not even shown any interest in post 28, you merely went into your routine.
The article with the picture did not say the woman identified as a Republican, just that she voted for Bush twice. I'm not seeing any reason why she might not have preferred Bush over Gore or Kerry. I'd be interested in hearing exactly why you see her as not possibly being a Republican.
I am a white southerner and Herman Cain and Alan West are my heroes. I live for the day a successful, smart conservative black person will be on a national republican ticket and force 45% of the blacks to pull the 'R' lever.
Well it’s half right. I don’t see it much in Dallas, but recently visited Mobile, AL, and yeah, the Mormonism isn’t playing well there.
Ok, what about her appearance tells you how she voted? Popping corn as I type, because this oughta be good.
“She said she will vote for Obama, adding: “At least he wasn’t brought up filthy rich.”
Wow, envy much white trash?
Since all Mormons participate in Mormonism, is there really a distinction there? To the best of my knowledge there is no subset of Mormon that is not wholly enveloped by Mormonism.
BTW, that was a response to her statement and the picture. NOT to you! :)
