Romney Slams the Obama Administration’s Response to Embassy Attacks [Adm denies statement theirs]
National Review Online - The Corner ^ | September 11, 2012 | Charles C. W. Cooke

Posted on 09/12/2012 1:52:49 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Mitt Romney has criticized the Obama administration’s craven response to today’s embassy attacks:

>>>I’m outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It’s disgraceful that the Obama Administration’s first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks.<<<

Meanwhile an Obama administration official told Politico that,

>>>the statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government.<<<

Which raises the question, How? Are we to presume that U.S. embassies are now autonomous? The press release went up on the official embassy website, and the tweets were sent from a verified account. Since that time, the embassy has doubled down on its position. Who is in charge around here?

Embassy of the United States - Cairo, Egypt

Press Release

U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement

September 11, 2012

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.

It’s now being reported that the US Ambassador to Libya and three members of his staff were killed in a rocket attack in Benghazi.

Yes, it is hitting the wire services now. Initial reports are from smoke inhalation. Like 1,000s of others in an Islamic terrorist attack 11 years ago...

It’s now being reported that the US Ambassador to Libya and three members of his staff were killed in a rocket attack in Benghazi.

U.S. ambassador to Libya killed in attack: Libya official "The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other embassy staff were killed in a rocket attack on Tuesday night that targeted his car in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, a Libyan official said on Wednesday.

"The American ambassador and three staff members were killed when gunmen fired rockets at them," the official in Benghazi told Reuters. Asked about the deaths, a U.S. Embassy employee in Tripoli said: "We have no information regarding this." The employee said the embassy could confirm the death of one person.

The Libyan official said the U.S. ambassador had been on his way to a safer venue after protesters attacked the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi and opened fire, killing a staff member, in protest at a U.S. film that they deemed blasphemous to the Prophet Mohammad."....................

Where the heck were the Marine Security Forces? Should have slaughtered every SOB coming over the wall. This was an invasion of US Territory and should have been answered with force. That’s the only thing the muslims understand.

But Romney has yet to slam the Embassy attacks

If you can't even read what is written without lying, what good are your observations.

As usual, they want a do-over. Exactly who does the State Department speak for? And why isn’t Obama ever in the Oval Office doing his job?

He's doing his job. He's working to get another four years to transform America to cowering before the Middle East.

Take your meds Granny. “Willard” has already harshly condemned the attacks and Obama’s limp response to them.

During my time with the Marine Security Guard (MSG) (decades ago) protecting the building is secondary to securing US classified information inside it and protecting Americans and local employees of the diplomatic facility. I’m pretty sure this has not changed. MSG detachments are normally pretty small in size (less than 10 Marines on average), so the notion of a prolonged battle with hundreds of determined and/or armed demonstrators with no outside local assistance is just not in the cards. The host country is responsible for the external security of the compound and for repairs to it if damaged by its citizens. However, kill host country citizens over mere property damage/destruction and all deals are off.

In high tension situations, the MSG can be directed to wear civilian clothing so as not to unnecessarily inflame local sensitivities. They are still armed and empowered to act as directed by the senior diplomat, just not in uniform. They are probably the two “security personnel” killed along with the ambassador (assuming they were, in fact, MSG). If the normal pattern for escorting ambassadors holds, the NCOIC of the MSG detachment is probably one of the dead. Looks like they were trying to move to a safer area when killed (along with a fourth person who is identified in some reports as a local consulate staff member). Waited too long to get out.

If I understood the State Department’s attitude properly, the building burning down, while unfortunate, is, relatively speaking, a better event than it being captured and all the classified information inside falling into the hands of the radicals (like it did in Teheran in 1978). State will take the killing of the ambassador pretty hard both at a diplomatic and personal level. They will view the Marine’s deaths less so. After all, getting killed in the line of duty is an occupational hazard for Marines, even those in the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (formerly Marine Security Guard Battalion). The Marines, of course, will never forget.

Whether or not this gutless, appeasing administration will make their deaths mean something...is well, unlikely.
