Romney stands by criticism of Obama over Cairo attack response

Mitt Romney on Wednesday stood by his criticism of the Obama administration for its early response to the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, even as he and President Obama mourned the murder of four Americans including the U.S. ambassador in a separate attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Romney said the administration's initial response to the attack in Cairo was "akin to apology" and a "severe miscalculation."

Both assaults were linked to a video being promoted in the U.S. that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo at first issued a statement saying, in part, that it condemns "the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

The Romney campaign issued a statement overnight calling that response "disgraceful," prompting criticism from the president's campaign. The Obama campaign accused Romney of launching a "political attack" as reports were first surfacing that one American had been killed. By Wednesday morning, the death count was at four.

Romney, as he condemned the "outrageous" Libya attack during a stop Wednesday in Jacksonville, Fla., did not back down from his criticism of Obama.

"I think it's a terrible course for America to (issue) an apology for our values," Romney said. "An apology for America's values is never the right course."

The Obama administration reportedly disavowed the Cairo Embassy statement, but Romney said Wednesday that "the embassy is the administration."

He said the disavowal "reflects the mixed signals they're sending in the world."

Romney went on to critique Obama's overall foreign policy, calling it a "hit-or-miss approach." Romney and his surrogates have been stressing foreign policy after the president, in his nomination address last week in Charlotte, called Romney and running mate Paul Ryan "new"

And this is news only because we always expect Romney to be intimidated and backtrack.

Now Romney needs to do what Obama would do on the other end of the spectrum - double-down. Come out with another, even stronger, statement of condemnation. Piling on is not illegal in this game.

Obama says: “Libyans carried Ambassador Stevens’s body to the hospital.”

Is that how he interprets rebels dragging the Ambassador’s body thru the streets?

“Both assaults were linked to a video being promoted in the U.S. that ridiculed Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.”
CBS is also reporting another reason for the assaults is retaliation for a June drone strike that killed the #2 AQ guy.

Still no mention of the name of the video.

>> Come out with another, even stronger, statement of condemnation. Piling on is not illegal in this game.

Carefully, though, in a way that won’t rob the dignity of the very real Americans that were killed at the hands of these bastards for cheap political gain. Or have the exploitable appearance of doing so.

And also tell us how President Romney would handle it, and why.

This is an interesting situation that will tell us a lot about Romney’s political and executive skills.

I’m watching closely. I expect him to pass the test with flying colors, even with a hostile media hounding him. I hope I’m not disappointed.

It wasn’t the movie! Quit trying to give these murderers an excuse. The goddamn Democrats are going to start blaming the Ambassador because he was in Libya!

Correct. Which is exactly why Mitt needs to stand his ground and even double down if necessary. The irony of launching this attack on the 11th anniversary of 9-11 isn't lost on most Americans.

Obama needs to fight a two front war on the defense: Proven worthless on the economy and now proving worthless on defending America as well.

If you haven't seen 2016: Obama's America yet, then go now as these events are proving it to be prophetic.

They were also chanting “we are all Osama,” so this attack went way beyond some 12 minute Internet movie that hadn’t even been seen yet...that was just a convenient excuse somebody (probably in our State Dept) cranked out to avoid facing the fact that this was a pre-planned 9/11 anniversary attack.

Hopefully this will seal the deal to put Romney/Ryan over the top. Otherwise, as a country we’re f-ing done. There’s no doubt in my mind of this. We won’t survive 4 more years of the Kenyan bastard.

I’m glad Romney said this and I hope he stays firm. Even Obama’s fans will have to admit that he has handled the ME very badly since day one, and this is the culmination of his ineptitude...or his plan.
