Opposition Still Strong to License Law (62% NM Hispanics oppose DL's for illegals)

After two years of legislative debate about whether the state should continue issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, nearly three-fourths of New Mexicans still don’t like the idea.

Seventy-one percent of likely New Mexican voters surveyed in a new Journal Poll said they oppose the 2003 state law that allows illegal immigrants to receive driver’s licenses.

Twenty-one percent of voters said they support the practice; 8 percent said they are undecided.

A majority of Anglos and Hispanics, as well as voters in every region of the state, opposed the practice.

Gov. Susana Martinez, after her election in 2010, frequently cited the broad majority of voters who voiced opposition to the illegal immigrant driver’s licenses to defend her efforts to repeal the law during the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions.

Martinez’s legislative effort, however, has been stymied by state Senate Democrats who have failed to act on legislation passed by the state House in each of the past two years to have the law repealed.

Among voters who identified themselves as Hispanic, 62 percent said they were opposed to the law allowing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants.

Excellent article. Among Democrats, the percentage opposing licenses for illegals is 59 percent of registered Democrat voters. The article says the high negative percentage for Hispanics is likely due to "the state’s predominance of native New Mexican Hispanics" (been here for 400 years) and a comparatively low rate of newly arrived Hispanic immigrants.

I would say that NM is going to have quite a number of Hispanics voting for Romney!!! This effect will be present in many states — especially along the southern border.

Obama will continue to fight for everything he can give away to illegals to get them to vote (illegally) for him. Every vote he can buy with tax-payer money, he will pursue.

On the news today, it was reported that a survey done here in Texas found that over 20% of illegal aliens in Texas did not know there was a law forbidding drunk driving.

Duh....I guess that explains the slaughter on TX highways every weekend and holiday, a preponderance of which were caused by Mexicans. Many a family has been decimated by this carnage, and that includes legal Hispanic families.

The more I get acquainted with more Hispanic people, the more I see it is a mistake for America to deal with Mexico and Mexicans as one monolithic country.

In general, I've found people from northern Mexico to be industrious and respectful of their neighbor to the north. While those from the Mexico City area and southward see us as a big dumb gringa cow to be milked, invaded, exploited and sucked dry.

I've often wondered what would happen if we told Mexico we were going to sponsor an independent buffer state in the north even to the point of sending troops down to enforce the border.

Within one generation of closing the border, hunting down and exterminating the drug cartels and cutting off the invasion route of the hordes from the south, I'm guessing we would have a functioning first world state in Northern Mexico.

I would support a drivers license that was marked was clearly marked not a citizen.

It would be a compromise for one marked freeloading illegal alien.
