MOSCOW — Upon learning of the violent death of the United States ambassador to Libya on Wednesday, many Russians responded with variations on “I told you so.”
Russia has long argued that the West should not support popular uprisings against dictatorships in the Middle East lest Islamic fundamentalism take hold. Vladimir V. Putin, then serving as prime minister, was especially enraged last fall after an angry crowd killed his ally, Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, an event he later condemned as a “repulsive, disgusting” scene.
Since then, Russia has blocked Western initiatives to force Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, from power despite a bloody crackdown on the opposition. Russians’ responses to the storming of the American Consulate in Benghazi underlined the deep policy divide. A prime-time news report pointedly juxtaposed images of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s death with Colonel Qaddafi’s, pointing at their similarities, then cut to footage of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reacting to the Libyan leader’s death with a cursory “wow.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Margelov said that passions had been stoked by the uprisings and that they “splash out in the form of terrorist acts or massacres of nonbelievers or an attack on embassies and consulates.”

I believe most of the people on this forum would agree with the Russians on this one.
I would trade The Disaster for Putin any day.
Russians are many things, stupid isn’t one of them, they learned from Afghanistan.
They also learned from Serbia/Kosovo, George Soros, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, and Syria.
And frighteningly, the Russians never forget.
Boy do I hate it when I have to agree with a despot like Putin.

Good advice sometimes comes from the most unexpected sources.
It would be wise to remember what the Russians did when Lebanese Muslim terrorists kidnapped a Russian diplomat in Lebanon, adding him to the dozen or so western diplomats that had already been kidnapped and held for years.

Russia learned about radical “freedom fighters” from Chechnya.

I don’t think Romney and Putin would necessarily agree, although Mitt is known to change his mind.
I just have a feeling there’s a little more than “I told you so” on Putin’s part. Holding coats, or using proxies, I wouldn’t be surprised to find his fingerprints on it.
The Russkies are right.
But their logic falls apart if what Obama really wants is what they fear - that Islamic fundamentalism take control of countries in the wake of militant muslim uprisings.
And that is exactly what his goal is.

We should never had taken the position we did in the first place. It isn’t so much that the Russians are right as it is that we are so, so wrong!
And it’s not just Obama. Who in the Republican party has been the biggest advocate of helping the Arabs rising up against their dictators?
Why John McCain, our very own nominee in 2008. Either of these fellows being elected back in 2008 would have brought us to this point.
