NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The number of people filing for their first week of unemployment benefits rose to the worst reading since July, the government said Thursday, in another sign of a weakness in the jobs market.
The Labor Department said 382,000 people filed first-time jobless claims in the week ended Sept. 8. That was sharply higher than the forecast of 369,000 people seeking help from economists surveyed by Briefing.com, as well as the previous week's reading of 367,000.
It was the greatest number of people losing their jobs since 388,000 filed for help in the week ending July 14. About 3.3 million received their second week or more of unemployment benefits during the week, although that ticked down by 49,000 in the most recent reading.

“UNEXPECTED” not
But the unemployment went down to 8.1% last week so everything is ok. Right?
President’s Schedule - September 13, 2012
No public schedule.

Is there anyone left who actually still takes these Thursday reports seriously?
So obamma got the numbers he wanted last week. Now things are falling apart again.
This guy is going to lose.
I think it’s not even a question now. It’s all a matter as to which date the first media whore cracks when they realize they can no longer keep up the facade.
Ah Ah Ah Ch Ch *BULLCARP* Ch OO OO OO! Whew. Sniff.
The ‘week ending September 8’ was a short week due to Labor Day Monday. Holiday week reports typically result in a somewhat lower number than non-holiday weeks.
Thus, the 382,000 is a significant jump from the previous [Dem Convention week ... hmmmmmmm] report of 367,000. It could signal an even higher number for the coming weeks.
Per the DOL website:
http://www.dol.gov/opa/media/press/eta/ui/current.htm
FL, NC, GA, PR had a Decrease of over 1,000...so it certainly didn’t hurt Florida or Puerto Rico. And to make Bloomberg’s claim even more ridiculous, it states that Puerto Rico’s DECREASE was BECAUSE of office closures due to Isaac. They had less claims, because the office wasn’t open all week!
The states with the largest Increase: Storm ravaged PA and NV.
They really are just making stuff up now.
Unixp...(hic) Unexspect..(hic) Unexshpec....(hic)
If we were using the same numbers that we used 4 years ago, unemployment would be 11%.
Last month more people went on food stamps than got new jobs...again.
Epic fail.
That almost never happens. /s
By every objective measure this administration has been a disaster and no amount of spin nor the best efforts of the media can change that fact. I think since Obama is always comparing “Bush’s” recession to the great depression then we should measure unemployment the exact same way they did then. It wouldn’t be 8.1 percent. I truly think that they are trying to fudge the number down to 7.9 before the election so they can say the stimulus worked.
“So obamma got the numbers he wanted last week. Now things are falling apart again.”
With Hussein’s Arab Trifecta this week, who will notice or care?
No public schedule.
Of course not, the Simp with a Pimp is on a campaign trip.
HP is axing another 2,000.
Why are we even bothering with any of this? It is 2004 all over again.
Bottom line.
1. Obama already has 247 Electoral Votes.
2. Romney has 29.
3. Obama needs only Ohio to hold the throne.
4. Mitt needs to run the table.
End of story.
I disagree - In fact as of today, I believe it is almost certain that Obama will be reelected - probably by a significant margin.
Regardless of political leanings, most Americans are non political they aren’t policy wonks who pore over blogs of either the right or left. They catch snatches of information from the media and they vote how they are led to vote. They are being led to vote for the obviously inferior candidate.
I wish I was wrong but expect to have this narcissistic man-child in your face for another four years. This time around he will have no limiting factor on his power. He knows he can bypass Congress and the Constitution and the academics and media will praise not condemn the crime.
You’re right, the swing voters don’t vote on policy. They don’t understand policy. In the last 30 years, the most charismatic candidate has won every single time. Mondale, Dukakis, Gore and Kerry did not win the charm contest, but Clinton and Obama did. If Romney continues to come across as a stiff and a reserved, emotionless automaton, he’ll lose.
Let’s not lose hope or stay home in November.
I see a lot of local leftist freaks spinning as hard as they can against Romney or for Hussein, and a lot of others calling them out on the hatred.
But I realize if Big Media wins this for the arrogant POS Fraud, we’re done. Maybe enough others will, too.
Americans are not as stupid as they are made out to be far too many times on this site.
As much as it may seem astute or cute to see them as a bunch of welfare-loving drones that just want more of the same is to treat them no differently than the Democrats do.
Well, I dont. As we have seen in other elections where the “consensus” was that the left-wing Democrats were going to win because they “have all the cards”, that thinking is nothing more than badly-formed defeatism born of a annoying conservative trait of assuming because everyone isn’t shaking their fists 24/7, that they must love how things are.
It is what happened in Mass, Wisconsin, and in 2010. Too many people so sure of defeat just because it has to be, when the facts proved otherwise.
The Romney campaign slogan should be simply: “Results matter”
No one has more contempt for the American voter than I so it would be easy to agree with you.
However, I keep noticing that these polls have to be highly skewed in order to eck out a victory for The Disaster. Most actually show Romney is winning once you start unpack the actual findings.
Things are a lot more positive than you let on.
Well, Americans are stupid. They elected Carter, Clinton & Obama. Someone once said, “Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people.” Just look at all the idiots in CA & other states voting for more freebies as if it will never end. End game American w/i the next 5 yrs. period.
You won’t find me defending the intelligence of the American voter but even the stupid eventually learn. They have been hit over the head enough to get rid of The Disaster.
You both couldn’t be more wrong. Simply, “It’s the economy stupid.” He’s toast and big time. Period.
According to one “news” report this could be due to Hurricane Isaac. I swear.
Unfortunately if things were decided by objective measure the clown would never have entered the race to begin with. Even eight years prior to 2008 he would have had zero chance and would have known so.
