Romney Offends the Pundits
WSJ ^ | September 12, 2012 | WSJ

Tuesday's assaults on the U.S. Embassies in Benghazi and Cairo have injected foreign policy into the Presidential campaign, but suddenly the parsons of the press corps are offended by the debate. They're upset that Mitt Romney had the gall to criticize the State Department for a statement that the White House itself disavowed.

We're referring to the statement issued Tuesday under the headline "U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement." The statement came in response to Muslim protests against a 13-minute anti-Islamic video making the rounds on YouTube.

In response to anger in Egypt at the video, the Embassy in Cairo issued its statement saying that "The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims—as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

[Snip]

One problem is that the statement came not long before Egyptian protestors stormed the Embassy and some of them made it over a wall and into the compound. An Embassy Twitter post after the assault said its earlier statement "still stands."

Mr. Romney reacted late Tuesday with his own statement: "I'm outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi. It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks."..[Snip]

The Obama Presidential campaign jumped on the remarks Wednesday as inappropriate, yet a "senior Administration official" had told the website Politico later on Tuesday night that "The statement by Embassy Cairo was not cleared by Washington and does not reflect the views of the United States government." So the White House can walk away from its own diplomats, but Mr. Romney can't criticize them?

Another shameful day for the anti-American media.

The pundits offend the American people. It’s time to put them in their place too!

It’s pretty clear the media will do ANYTHING to keep their master in power. They don’t even pretend any more.

On a level playing field, Romney would be mopping the floor with 0bama now (is that racist?). But he’s got a tough fight against the media.

1) I haven't really followed the whole thing as closely as I might have (too disgusted)
2) Really not a Romney fan.

Having said that, as far as I am aware, Romney is about the only politician making any sense on this. It seems to me that he has handled this well.

Many American citizens have just got to be upset and disgusted by this terrorist attack on 9/11. Almost no one is speaking out for us. Romney has stepped up and is doing what any American politician should do. Good for Romney!

I hope he goes all-in and sticks to his guns and absolutely refuses to "walk back" anything. This is no time to be weak, to vacillate, to apologize. We should call them barbarians and curse them for their abhorrent actions.

There is a really bad old B movie called “Rackets USA” where Ward Bond says the following.....

“Lemme plug ‘em, boss. I just love to rub out reporters.”

For the mobs of Muslims attacking American Embassies, it was not about a supposed religious sensitivity, but about support for Osama's cause.

For the mobs of "journalists" attacking Romney, it was not about a fabricated campaign protocol, but about support for Obama's cause.

The rioting Muslims chanted "We are all Osama!" If the "journalists" were as honest as they should have chanted "We are all Obama!"

This event will define the election just has the financial crisis 4 years cinched it for Obama when McCain suspended his campaign and went back to Washington to do nothing.

If Romney keeps the pedal to the floor calling out Obama he's in, but if he starts walking this back he could be finished.

You know, you are so right. I was thinking back about how bad Nightline and TEd Koppel undeniably hurt Carter so bad.

I’ll bet after Reagan won, Koppel was thinking, “oh, crap...I didn’t intend this...”

An American Ambassador and three other Americans are dead. The American Ambassador represented all of us. I take his murder personally. We all should. These deaths are directly attributable to Hillary Clinton’s incompetence. Incompetence that results in death should never be ignored and tolerated. Incompetence that results in death must be corrected and the only way to correct this is to fire Hillary Clinton. This was gross negligence on her part. The only action significant enough to preclude this level of incompetence in the future is to fire her. Four Americans lost their lives.....she should lose her job.

But, but, but................Peggy Noonan it made Romney look weak making his statements. HUH? I can’t believe this fool once worked for Uncle Ronnie. If anything, it sounded like to me that Mittens was right on the money with this and made uncle obie look like the blithering idiot that he is. Uh, I mean the smartest man in the universe. Yeah, that’s it. NOT! And the egypt embassy apologizes for someone hurting the muslims feelings. WHAT! This gets more and more bizarre with every passing minute.

P.S. Sending 50 Marines in sounds kind of unfair to the libyans to me. Ooh Rah!!!!

Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.

One problem is that the statement came not long before Egyptian protestors stormed the Embassy and some of them made it over a wall and into the compound. An Embassy Twitter post after the assault said its earlier statement “still stands.

The argument the Dems are using is that this statement was made before the attack in Libya by Cairo embassy officials who were surrounded by a mob and terrified for their lives, not as a response to the attack in Libya which hadnt happened yet.

And they are saying that condemning the statement publicly immediately as suggested would have put the Cairo embassy in danger of ending up like the Libyan embassy did officials dead, not supporting them. (the complication is that there are two embassy's)

Thoughts?

Also, A former military official on FNC said the media should ask Obama if those two dozen marines he is sending to the embassy after the attack have authorization to use deadly force if attacked.

Yep. This was firm, solid leadership by Romney. And if we don't stand behind him in saying what's right, who will?

I don’t wholly accept the premise that these attacks are a reaction to the mu-haha-mud movie. Obviously, the 9/11 timing cannot be coincidental.

Security of our Embassies’ sovereign ground, or the lack thereof, is the responsibility of the Executive Branch. This death and destruction is on Barry’s hands: weakness in policy, weakness in the executuon of security, weakness in response.

It’s hell to have an ametuer empty suit presiding over a very tenuous free world! Especially when freedom and liberty are not his focus, social justice is. Marx and Lennin are laughing from the gates of hell.

It can and very well could get worse.
