American Killed in Libya Was on Intel Mission to Track Weapons
ABC News ^ | Sept. 13, 2012 | LEE FERRAN

One of the Americans killed alongside Ambassador Christopher Stevens in an attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya Tuesday told ABC News before his death that he was working with the State Department on an intelligence mission to round up dangerous weapons in the war-torn nation.

In an interview with ABC News last month, Glen Doherty, a 42-year-old former Navy SEAL who worked as a contractor with the State Department, said he personally went into the field to track down so-called MANPADS, shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, and destroy them. After the fall of dictator Moammar Gadhafi, the State Department launched a mission to round up thousands of MANPADS that may have been looted from military installations across the country. U.S. officials previously told ABC News they were concerned the MANPADS could fall into the hands of terrorists, creating a threat to commercial airliners.

Doherty said that he traveled throughout Libya chasing reports of the weapons and once they were found, his team would destroy them on the spot by bashing them with hammers or repeatedly running them over with their vehicles. When ABC News spoke to Doherty in late August, he was enjoying a short time off in California before heading back to Libya just days ago.

The State Department declined to comment on Doherty's involvement in the MANPADS program, but pointed to a previous statement from State Assistant Secretary for Political-Military Affairs Andrew Shapiro in which he said the department was looking at "every possible tool to mitigate the threat."

According to military records provided to ABC News, Doherty joined the Navy in 1996 and was a combat medic and a decorated member of the elite SEAL teams by the time he left active duty in 2004.

Thinking the same here. Something has really disturbed me and no one has ask the question. Why was Obama addressing the Arab nations on 9/11. Why not the week before or the week after? Am I just dense because I really don’t understand that? I told my husband it just made me sick to my stomach and something was just not right about it.

Did someone in Team Soetoro tip off the Muslim Brotherhood about the presence and mission of these two former SEALs??

We need to investigate HUMA ABEDIN, Hillary Clintons top aide.

Obama was in DOHA, QATAR

Listen to and watch 0bama’s 9/11 message to muslims. Please. He said, “Here in Doha.” He, Holder and some other guy were in Doha.

...there to see about ‘recovering assets.’

Three keywords:

inspire: Al Qaeda’s magazine
freedom: tahrir
conqueror/winner: (Son of) Benghazi.

Think about that message and how it was received when translated and broadcast to the Arab street.

there were no Marines providing any security for any of the diplomatic personnel in Benghazi?

I was wondering about this too...until I realized Benghazi is a consulate.

We don't have Marines at consulates...just Embassies. The Embassy is in Tripoli.

Well, I understand that; but one would think that the Ambassador would have security with him no matter where he was. And would not that security detail be US Marines? What a effin' mess.

Yep, why would he blab to the media?

I thought those nondisclosure agreements were LIFELONG.

And anything remotely close to talking to ANY media was to be authorized.

While I have the utmost respect for most Navy SEALs, it seems like some think they can freely talk to reporters or write books about classified missions these days.

Fox News confirms Tyrone Woods, 41, a former Navy SEAL, was one of four Americans killed -- including US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and ex-SEAL Glen Doherty -- when protesters attacked the US consulate Tuesday in Benghazi, Libya.

So the ambassador, a former member of the US Air Force, and two former Navy SEALs. Prayers to their family - my daughter had met the communications/information officer (former USAF) back when he was in Iraq, I think in 2008. Very well liked and very competent from what she said.

Some of the media are blaming this on the movie, and while the movie is like kicking a hornets nest, in this instance, as more comes out, it was very clear that this was an assault that had been planned, and the movie was just an excuse.

Well, I understand that; but one would think that the Ambassador would have security with him no matter where he was.

Having visited more than a few consulates and other US diplomatic facilities in Africa over the years, while I hated to see this happen, I wasn't too surprised. I've seen a lot of half-assed situations with little to no security, or the security was locals. Or even worse, the security was to pay the potential troublemakers off.

I remember one time back in the 1990ss being sent to an area where we met the US representative, and he drove up in his "official" vehicle, which was a Toyota truck with no markings. No security or anything. In hindsight, smart, because he didn't stand out, but I know this stuff still happens, and these days it's dangerous as hell. The ambassador was a prime target.

He must have had clearance. Once it was out there he would be targeted. If so, they wanted the mission to be known but for what purpose? And why was he abandoned?
