Someone said the Marines were not guarding the embassy but that it wouldn't have mattered because the attackers numbered 400.

the consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed was an interim facility with zero Marines. None. Instead, it was staffed by Libyan security officers, who according to CBS News, told Ambassador Stevens to hide in a second building, then promptly directed the Islamist mob to him. He was murdered and dragged through the streets.
