Why Florida Is Still Up for Grabs for Obama or Romney
The Daily Beast ^ | Sep 14, 2012 | David Freedlander

Posted on 09/14/2012 7:49:07 AM PDT by Marie

A new poll out Thursday evening from NBC News and The Wall Street Journal gives Barack Obama some breathing room in three key states—Virginia, Ohio, and perhaps most importantly Florida, a state that analysts say is crucial to Mitt Romney’s hopes of winning the White House.

There the poll gives Obama a 49-44 edge, and comes on the heels of a poll out Thursday afternoon that gave brief hope to the Romney campaign.

That poll, sponsored by the Associated Industries of Florida, a pro-business lobbying group, puts Romney up 50-47 in the state. It, however, comes with caveats. The survey was conducted by the right-leaning polling firm McLaughlin & Associates, and the candidates are within the 4 percent margin of error. Other polls out this week—from Survey USA, and Rasmussen, to name but a few—give Obama a similarly slight edge, or call the race a dead heat.

Still, for a Romney camp that has seen poll numbers slip nationally coming out of the convention and is facing withering criticism after it bungled the response to the Middle East embassy shootings, any good poll in a storm will do. And so backers of the former Massachusetts governor pounced on the numbers this afternoon as evidence that its messaging in the Sunshine State was working.

So here we have a poll showing Romney ahead, and this rag is trying to spin it that this is good news for Obama.

But here is the golden (arrogant, hilarious) part - their comments on Jewish Florida voters:

“With his record on Israel, Obama should be up over 90 percent among Jewish voters,” said Robert Watson, a professor of American Studies at Lynn University in Boca Raton. “But there has been a very effective fear-mongering campaign that has been running through the synagogues, through the Hadassah chapters, through the community groups, and it has been making inroads.”

Watson said that when he speaks to older Jewish voters, they often reference chain emails or blogs they have read which question Obama’s upbringing and his commitment to Israel.

“I don’t want to sound disparaging, but folks over 65 are not as sophisticated when it comes to social media,” he said. “They read something online and they don’t realize it’s not coming from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or Newsweek.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just wow!
So if it doesn't come from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or Newsweek, then we shouldn't listen. If we do, we're not 'sophisticated'.
I needed to start my day with a good laugh!
Yes, but they’re waking up and now the left has decided that they are unsophisticated and easily manipulated.
I love it. When Jewish voters are voting left, they’re considered to be the smartest people in the world (by the left).
Now that a large portion of them are starting to see the light (in the eyes of the left) they’re just so easily confused by the internet!
Jews, please take note and help send the grifter packing.
Thanks for the reply. The problem with internet is that it seems like conversation but is still writing, and important clues of intonation and expression are left out. Things seem more stark than intended much of the time.
My apologies for getting snarky. I really thought that was intended as a blanket put down. That said, I truly DO NOT understand the lopsided favor for leftwing politics generally with so many Jews. I have always assumed it was mostly a secular versus religious distinction, with the seculars attempting to create heaven on earth. Good works writ too large and misapplied.
It’s OK. I messed up!
I originally put the title then, (the left now thinks that Jews are too stupid to understand the media). I’ve seen this for years on FR, a major implication of the article pointed out in the title.
It was too long, so I shortened it without thinking. I was too focused on getting the first comment right so I could get the point across.
I’m just glad that my blonde moment was fixed and I thank you for your understanding! :)
Had Obama been up by 3% in the same poll, they’d have been saying that he’s got it in the bag. That Romney should just quit now. This whole thing was so bias that it made my head spin.
The article said: “both Obama and George W. Bush in 2004 won the state by less than three percentage points, after a virtual tie in 2000.”
Obama won Florida by less than 3 percentage points? I did not know that. Surely he has angered enough Jews and small business owners to knock off more than 3 percent of his ‘08 support. This makes me think that Romney could win Florida BIG.
I noticed the exact same lines as you did. Hilarious? No. Arrogant? Yes. Idiotic? Surely.
There is no such thing as "fear mongering" when the fear of "Osama" Obama is reasonable and palpable.
You must realize that "The Daily Beast" is a leftist site so that they are going to spin the (likely flawed) poll results favoring Zero as they please. But these comments from Watson and others elsewhere in this article indicate that the 'Rats are really nervous about Florida. In fact, it's they who will have a very difficult time winning nationally if they lose Florida.
So - a member of the academented at a bottom tier “university” called Linn, uhh, Lynn (whatever) U in Rats Mouth, Florida is busy putting the ‘DUH in FloriDUH.
Nothing surprising here. What will surprise Professor Watson is that Americans do understand Islam’s danger to America AND they understand Obama is more pro-Islam than pro-America.
The Trustees of that “university” should be busy pruning their own grove of the academy. A chainsaw applied to professor Watson’s tenure would be a good start.
We will also make sure that Karen Harrington is elected to the House and send Debbie Liar Schultz packing!
“The mystery has always been why Jews are communist sympathizers and vote Demoncratic. The answer is they do because they hate Christians more. The ‘Far Right’ scares them,...but Not the ‘Far Left!’”
WRONG ! ! !
From both a theological and a historic perspective, the above statement is incorrect.
The first Jews came to America while Stuyvesant was running Neuw Amsterdam (New York City today). The top officials back in Amsterdam did not want them admitted but as people with skills were needed, he let them enter. They prospered and became citizens little different than their neighbors excepting their religion.
Much the same happened in South Carolina.
Then came the much later Jewish migrations from Russia and Germany. The Russian Jews brought “Red Shirt” communism with them and the German Jews brought “Brown Shirt” communism.
“Fear of Christians” in America? Not a viable hypothesis, I must tell you. What would American Jews fear about Christians? A howling horde of Southern ‘Hard Shell’ Baptists “witnessing”? Mormons on bicycles? Seventh Day Adventists knocking on the front door to invite a discussion of theology?
Returning to the real world, collectivism, the broad term of which communism is but one variety, came first to America with the Pilgrims. Governor William Bradford, in his book History Of The Plymouth Colony, described the first Pilgrim government as what we would call ‘communist. According to him, “This community was nearly our undoing”.
He meant it, and described the many and diverse ways in which “community” caused the Starving Winter. Collectivism is an ancient evil.
Well educated Jews know the Torah does not allow communism or other violations of a certain Commandment, specifically “THOU SHALT NOT STEAL”.
They once knew G*d didn’t have to add “Nor Enlist Thy Congress Critter To Steal For You”.
Recently, some Jews seem to have confused the Mosaic Law call for a just society with the Communist call for “Social Justice.”
I suspect G*d is not amused by their error.
Boy, is my face red.....I typed above that Obama would win Florida big, when, of course, I meant Romney. I seldom make a typo, but when I do, it's a biggie, LOL. My apologies for scaring people half to death.
I predict a huge win in Florida for the GOP. I've kept my ear to the ground for months, bringing up the election in casual conversations with neighbors, clerks, tradesmen coming to my place for repair work, folks from all levels of social and economic strata that one meets from day to day in my section of the Sunshine State.....and almost without exception, they're voting for Romney....or, in many cases, against Obama. I see zero yard signs or bumper stickers for president Zero.
A lot of the older seniors down here are still voting for FDR when they enter the booth, but I look for the trades class, the younger retirees, the white collar workers, the huge Florida small business class plus the majority of the male population voters to BREAK BIG for the GOP.
Egrets Up!
Jewish support of all things leftist was once explained to me as the product of Russian Jewish suppport of leftist Russian politics. Of course the reality is that Stalin was profoundly anti Semitic and slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Jews. That he did this in the dark never truly permeated the Russian mind. Many old timers in Russia continue to celebrate this world class monster as a great leader.
Judaism is a culture of tradition where traditional politics are slow to change. That an increasing number of leaders in the Jewish community are taking conservative positions at least economically and in foreign affairs is profoundly important.
Jews are not intimidated by cries of racism. They are perfectly clear that Obama’s traitorous actions have nothing to do with his racial pedigree and everything to do with his sexuality. You will be hard pressed to find a queer Jew.
What reason? Christ for starters. For the same reason the Left and the Rinos hate and fear born-again Christians. Stalin didn’t spoil there love of communism. Jews support every commie despot on earth in the New DemonRat party. No message is too strong for Jews. Holly weird Jews defile God and religion? Great! Jews support the killing of unborn children but mourn theirs lost in the Nazi furnaces? Great! Some Jews actually rejoice at the possible destruction of Israel. Great! Jews hate and fear Christians, the GOP, and the ‘horrible’ Right Wingers’ more than anything. Your historical thesis is meaningless in today’s world. Jews should have no issues with Jesus, other than softening the Mosaic laws regarding forgiveness and restitution.
As a matter of fact, Jesus was a Jew and he is looked on as a Rabbi who did good.
I have been told that Jews vote for democrats because they are grateful for a [D]emocrat president that supported them during the [H]olocaust.
Well, whoever would think that Franklin D. Roosevelt supported Jews during the Holocaust is an historic ignoramus. The Roosevelt Administration's record on helping to save European Jews' lives from Nazi barbarity is quite dismal.
This is documented in a book titled "While 6 Million Died" written by Arthur D. Morse in the 1960s.
You might also want to check out the 1976 film called "Voyage of the Damned" (which, incidentally features a cast of well-known actors of their time). That is the true story of a ship of German-Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany that was refused entrance into Cuba where they had been told they would be welcome. They then appealed desperately to the Roosevelt Administration which refused their landing in the US as well, forcing them back to Western Europe where most of then ended up as Holocaust victims.
The details are interesting and I appreciate the additional information that y’all provided that I didn’t previously know. However, I believe this is a case similar to why blacks tend to vote Democrat; a D was president when the Civil Rights Act was passed and a D was president when we went to war with Germany. The details are irrelevant... to them.
From this Jewish perspective, I would say that WWII has to be a less than adequate explanation of the attraction of Franklin D. Roosevelt to Jewish voters. You have to realize that Roosevelt had already been elected President three times by the time the US declared war on Germany days after Pearl Harbor. Plus, some might well argue that he and his administration entered the war belatedly only because their hand was forced by events beyond their control.
No, the main reason for the Jewish community's affinity for Roosevelt stems from his domestic policy. The American Jewish community in the 1930s was much different demographically than it is today. Following the massive wave of Jewish immigration to the US from about 1880 to 1914, they were nowhere near as well-educated as a group and tended to be much more toward the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder, consisting largely of immigrants and younger first generation Americans. Being poor at the time made them more susceptible to the class warfare propaganda of the New Deal. But just as importantly, most of their family experiences in the old country centered around serious problems with the Russian czars, whereas the opposition to the czars in that world, their only hope for a better future, was essentially in various movements of the left. Hence the affinity for populist movements of the left in the United States, specifically Roosevelt's New Deal.
Jews weren't the only relatively new white ethnic group who supported Roosevelt and the 'rats in large numbers during that era. But their predilection for the 'Rats seems to have lasted considerably longer with time than has that of the others. There is a good deal of historical pro-Roosevelt, pro-Democrat mythology that has unfortunately been passed down through the generations in too many Jewish families, which still warps the views of many even in today's markedly different political climate.
Black voting patterns are a different story. Needless to say, their predilection for the 'rats is numerically much, much stronger than that of the Jews or other ethnic groups - especially with Obama at the top of the ticket.
