Teachers Appear to be the Winner
The Chicago Sun Times ^ | September 14, 2012 | Mark Brown

If the point of going on strike is to get a better deal than you would have received without it, then the Chicago Teachers Union is already a pretty clear winner this week in its confrontation with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his school board.

If the point of going on strike is to give voice to the frustrations of your members and to allow them to vent their anger, then you’d have to say the CTU was a runaway winner on that front as well.

And if the point of going on strike is to let your employer know you’re not going to be taken for granted in the future, then score another one for the CTU.

Are you detecting a pattern here?

As negotiators worked into the night to put what were expected to be the finishing touches on a contract settlement that union leaders could take to a vote Friday, it’s a tad premature to assess winners and losers not knowing the full parameters of a final deal.

But unless the union totally capitulates on the last major issue on the table, it’s hard to see how CTU President Karen Lewis and her members come out of this week as anything but a decisive winner.

Talk of this is racist, since only about 9 percent of the students affected were white. The strike and the whining teachers were racist, and our talking about the striking, whining teachers is racist, and our talking about that fudge stick Rahm is homophobic. So there. Least we want to be investigated by Holder, and terrorized by Muslims, we should speak no more of this.

Really ..?? These teachers in Chicago make between $71 to $75 THOUSAND per year .. and work less hours than most teachers.

I have no sympathy for them .. and their real beef is they don’t want to be held accountable for being lousy teachers, and all those lousy teachers who have already been laid off - SHOULD BE THE FIRST ONES RECALLED.

No wonder Chicago is the murder capital of the world.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re making 20,000 or 100,000. If inflation is taking away 5% per year of your purchasing power, then you are losing ground.

If you’re smart you’ll try to correct it.

Businesses do. They increase their prices when their costs go up. The government does. It has automatic inflation protection in tax lawas.

Why shouldn’t you do the same?

Heard this on the radio, so I can not vouch for accuracy. Chicago has 35k teachers and 350k students. By simple arithmetic, that’s 10 students per teacher.

I doubt that Chicago classrooms look like that. Suppose there are 20 students per teacher. That would require 17.5k teachers.

So, what are the extra 17.5k teachers who are not teaching actually doing?

There are a lot more than 20 students per class. Some of the teachers are special ed teachers, ESL teachers, etc., who don't have a single full-time classroom.

Saw Kruathammer on FOX the other day. He was alone in predicting the teachers union would win in Chicago.

A real leader would have fired them all on day one of the strike.

To hell with public unionized employees.

I was making $24.5 - in a very expensive locale to live. A 3% increase was all that was available.

Of course, I didn’t have to belong to a union and parade around to get my raises.

Sorry, it’s not the teachers I resent .. it’s the unions who control them. The unions who DEMAND no accountability for more pay and less hours. Not a good plan.

Always had a job .. never had to belong to a union.

I’m glad you were able to get a 3% increase. I hope you’re able to keep up with inflation as it skyrockets over the next few years.

I hope the same for any employer or employee in America.

I went through the ultra-inflation years of Jimmy Carter and it isn’t pretty.

Obama is the author of it, and the teachers in Chicago almost inadvertently revealed his incompetence.

Word is that Rahm has been nowhere near the actual negotiating sessions since he is both radoactive and toxic to the process.

It is worth noting that both Barack Obama and his neighbor Bill Ayers misspent $298 million dollars from the Annenberg Challenge (funds meant to benefit education in Chicago) and not a red penny (pun intended) spent ended up improving the CPS, but the Commies were pleased with mad money.

As I said, from my hearing of a radio report (in the car). What are the right numbers?

Actually, this is how Detroit became Detroit.

Excellent analogy.

Using older numbers, there are about 400,000 students to approximately 23,000 teachers. The student teacher ratio was about 20-1 for 2010, but that includes special ed classrooms that are much smaller.

The statistics for 2012 enrollment are not readily available. A census should be undertaken for 9/4/2012 in a few weeks.
