Attack on base in Afghanistan kills 2 Marines, destroys 2 jets
Fox News.com ^ | September 14, 2012 | Fox News' Justin Fishel and Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.

Two Marines were killed and several more injured when Afghan militants armed with rocket propelled grenades and small arms breached the perimeter of the main U.S. Marine base in southern Afghanistan, following a rocket and mortar attack on the base that is shared with British forces.

Army Maj. Martyn Crighton, a spokesman at International Security Assistance Force's Joint Command, said the attack on Camp Bastion/ Camp Leatherneck may still be ongoing. At least two were killed and a number were wounded. 16 Taliban were killed in the attack.

The base took indirect and small arms fire, causing major damage to buildings, an aircraft hangar and several military jets. Two of the eight Harrier jets at the base were damaged or destroyed, a US military source tells Fox News.

The base is a major military facility in the war-ravaged nation's Helmand province.

Britain's Prince Harry is stationed at the base with his Apache helicopter unit.

(snip)

Fox News has learned that the attack by armed militants on the main US marine base in southern Afghanistan was larger and more sophisticated than first reported.

This base is not some outpost somwhere - - this is THE base in Afghanistan. It’s BIG. The perimeter was “breached”? I cannot believe enemy Taliban got remotely close enough to this base to “breach” the perimeter with grenade launchers and small arms. Yikes.

The Obama administration does not give a RATSASSS about our military out there, and I also fault the top brass for allowing this crap to take place, and not put up more of a fight to make sure the crazy rules of engagement are not in-fact killing our soldiers.

Were the Marines watching that anti-Muslim movie to trigger this attack? /s Sounds to me like 0bama has damaged our intelligence gathering so badly that we’re sitting ducks. 0bama might as well ship our military uniforms to Al Qaeda; patches and all.

I am sooooo mad right now. Why haven’t we heard ANYTHING from Europe in support?

I think we all know why.

I think Europe need to “pick up the mess” the next time ‘round. Quite frankly........I detest them.

Supposedly, Prince Harry was at this joint base, which was likely the motivation for the attack. Al Qaeda had threatened to kill him when he was deployed.

0bama doesn’t mind.. Just so long as most of the soldiers subjected to this mental torture and FORCED VULNERABILITY are young WHITE MALES.

Looking like an effort against Prince Harry.

2 U.S. Marines Killed in Attack on Military Base in Afghanistan
Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, is stationed at the base

Obama will say it was not related to him or his administration, but an attempt to get Prince Harry. He is always looking for a scape goat. This is so sad for our men and women serving under this loser.

The attack occurred on the same base where a burning man, largely assumed to be an Afghan suicide bomber targeted the plane of the Defense Secretary Leon Panetta back in mid-March. Since then security at the base was not increased and responsibility for securing the compound, known as Camp Bastion/Leatherneck was transitioned to joint control with Afghan security forces in spite of a recent spate of “insider attacks” carried out by Afghans who NATO forces had trained or who had permission to be on U.S. bases.

Explains a heck of a lot, I think.

My brother-in-law was stationed at Camp Leatherneck, but his unit came home a few months ago. I’m glad he is out of harm’s way, but my prayers go up for those are still in the path of danger.

I think every Afghan in charge of base security should be complimented with an armed - round in chamber, safety off - American soldier, sailor, airman or Marine. REMFs included for this duty too.

Great. A few $300 RPG rounds take out two 20 million dollar jets.

We have heard from Europe. We’ve heard the Muslims burning our flag and Israel’s flag at our embassy in London!

According to reports however, the German and British press are trashing Obama on his foreign policy.
