A mounting body of evidence suggests a low-budget film about Islam and Muhammad was not the primary motive behind a series of violent attacks on U.S. embassies abroad, foreign policy experts say.
The attack in [Libya] was not a protest or demonstration but a major terrorist attackplanned and organized in advance by men who had access to mortars and other weapons, Elliott Abrams, former national security adviser for President George W. Bush, told the Free Beacon. It had nothing to do with any film. It was timed for Sept. 11.
Theres clear evidence these were planned in advance, especially in Egypt, Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, told the Free Beacon Friday. The movie wasnt up online until Sept. 10, and they didnt know about it when these things were planned.
News outlets continue to link the so-called protests to the anti-Islam film, and have even promulgated false information regarding the videos purported creator, an Egyptian-American Coptic Christian with a sordid past who originally claimed he was an Israeli-American.
The Associated Press, for instance, reported, The violence has raised worries that further protests could break out around the Muslim world as anger spreads over the movie.
CNN reported and has promoted a story that the attack at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was executed by a pro-al Qaeda group, which used the film as a “diversion.”
But the network has also proclaimed that the Egyptian protests are the latest to roil the Middle East over the online release of a film produced in the United States that denigrates the Prophet Muhammad.
In a separate report, CNN claimed, Protesters in both countries were apparently angry about an online film considered offensive to Islam.
Outlets such as CNN and the New York Times continue to label the violent mobs as protesters and demonstrators, though their ultimate desire appears to be bloodshed rather than free expression.
The media also has erred in its depiction of the films creator, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, rushing to incorrectly label him as a Jewish Israeli American, though he is not.
I find it disturbing and astonishing that the media wouldnt correct the early reports they made that this was Israeli or Jewish in origin, said Hoenlein, who called out NPR and other outlets for promulgating false information. They wont own it.
Hoenlein chastised major press outlets for jeopardizing the safety of Jewish people worldwide.
The danger is that weve had pogroms for this, he said. The report that Jews were behind this spread like wild fire.
As American interests abroad continue to face assaults from violent crowds, including in Tunis and elsewhere, Hoenlein fears the misinformation would continue to spread.
Im concerned this has a life of its own and in the Muslim world, where not everyone has access to the Internet, they wont see factually accurate reports, he said.
The White House, too, has cited the movie as the reason for the attacks, claiming the mobs were not motivated by anti-American zeal.
This is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy, this is in response to a video that is offensive to Muslims, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Friday.
Even as the D.C. press corps and White House focus on a series of perceived gaffes by Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, foreign policy reporters both here and abroad have disseminated accounts that fail to accurately describe the cause of the violence, experts said.
Its important to say clearly that what happened in Libyawhere the ambassador and several other Americans were murderedwas facilitated and planned by a group that wanted to kill American and likely would have found other pretext if the offensive film had not existed, Michael O’Hanlon, a foreign policy expert at the Brookings Institution, told the Free Beacon.
It does not appear to be the main cause, OHanlon said.
In Egypt, where angry hordes continue to riot, the Muslim Brotherhood-run government has encouraged the mobs.
There are certainly other forces at play in Egypt and those forces could easily have contributed, if not have been predominant, in sending those people over the wall, Reuel Marc Gerecht, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told the Free Beacon.
The film could have fueled it, but the desire to diminish the U.S. in Egypt and decrease the influence of the U.S. is paramount in their minds, Gerecht said.
Matt Welch, the editor in chief of Reason, also attempted to explain how the attacks should not be linked to the shoddily produced anti-Islam film.
Dont blame a YouTube movie for inciting the mob that killed the U.S. ambassador, read the headline of an article Welch published in Tablet magazine. Blame the killers.
Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, even offered a duplicitous statement that both apologized for and condoned the riots.
Morsi’s statement contained no apology to the United States, and there should have been one. He owes us one, said former Bush administration official Abrams. His government owed it to us to protect our embassy and failed to do so.
Morsis tepid reaction to the violence even led President Obama to suggest that Egypt is not an allya comment the White House quickly attempted to walk back.
The president obviously doesnt know how to handle the Islamic world, said Gerecht, saving additional scorn for Morsi.
Morsi obviously blew it big time in the way he handled this affair, Gerecht explained. Youre seeing the real reflexes of a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood doesnt like us and its pretty plain [that] its unnatural for them to help the U.S.
nevertheless obama rounds up the supposed film maker in a craven and blatant appeasment of the mooslims.
so will Obama give back the million dollars the film maker gave to his campaign ?
And, while one hand is moving to condemn the video, the other hand of the Obama Administration is probably promoting the existence and access to the video to draw attention away from Obama’s miserable failure as a President.
Maj. Coughlin, one of the real experts on Islamic Jihad, the Koran and analysis of OIC, Muslim Brotherhood and AlQaeda linkages and operations has put together a series of relatively short 5 videos seamlessly explaining it all from Maj. Hasan to the current attacks on US diplomatic functions connected with the integrated drive to attack the US First Amendment and everything else American. The videos are the most informative and integrated studies one can view in a short time with lots of detail on how the Koran provides the code for Muslim operations against the West from the OIC at the UN all the way down to the individual, lone acting, sudden Jihadist individual.
There is a 10 year plan, ending in 2015 which is on schedule with the current events unfolding and it is clearly explained in the videos. The first video is a brief introduction to the scope and nature of the world’s problem, and clear detailed, integrated information is presented right up to today in the next 4 videos. THe videos are quite compelling. View them and be part of the less than 1% of US citizens who are informed of details one might have missed:
I wouldn’t doubt if very few muslims even saw the movie. The white houseknew attacks were coming and was desperate to find a reason for the attacks so they found this movie. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was altered by the white house.
Through deflection they have now garnered more publicity than the film could ever had mustarded on its own, and only now, not on 9/11, are the Mussies enraged. Thank Obama and his Clown Company (including Dempsey) for making it so.
we all knew that this stupid administration blaming an obscure movie trailer for this terrorist uprising would turn around and bite them in the a**.
how foolish obama and hitlery looks to the rest of the world and to the islamofascists.
of course, liberals will still be busy trying to destroy the 1st admendment anyway. they live in a different reality.
if we can just apologize enough and bow in front of the terrorists and give up our right of free speech, then these savages will love us.
The initial attacks were planned in advance for 9-11 and were not reaction to the video. Now, with the help of the Obama administration's non-stop barking, the film (rather its existence, as very few who are rioting have likely seen it) is a catalyst for the spread of the unrest. That google won't take it down is telling.
Obama seems to want to foment this unrest, i don't know why. To take eyes off domestic problems, to stir the pot such that voters won't want to change horses in the middle of a crisis, or to make a play on restricting free speech, I don't know. But nothing is an accident with these people.
I agree with your premise. I do not recall anyone saying squat about the 14 minute video, until this administration brought it up. And yet there appears to be an abundance of evidence, even by the perps who claim responsibility for the murders, do not mention a video. For crying out loud, it was the anniversary of 9/11 and some video that until this administration made public had no attention what so ever?
Something is missing in their script to explain either their deliberate neglicance or base incompetence, or even something far more sinister.
MR. JONES: Oh, sure. I did it. But it was her fault. She disrespected me and was trying to get away from me. What else could I do? It was HER fault!!
HOMICIDE DETECTIVE: Oh, OK. We understand. You can go now. We wish you well. Please try not to do it again?
White House and MSM are spreading “black propaganda” to deflect the blame on the film.
I find it interesting that the government knew all about this video BEFORE anything happened. And then they jumped out and said the video was the cause of the attacks. I doubt very many muslims even saw the thing. I wouldn’t doubt that obama’s peeps made the film. They knew attacks were coming.
Thanks for the link. Great series of video presentations that draw out the linkages between the Kuran, islamic law and Islamic doctrine of domination- and how our political and military leadership continues to deny these linkages in prosecuting their so called “war on terror”.
