According to Merriam Webster, the colloquialism “breadbasket” originated in 1753.

Not sure what civil war the term breadbasket originated in, but it was not ours.

Seriously, the media is becoming a Saturday Night Live skit.

“Bread Basket” should be compliment. It conjures up visions of bumper crops and silos filled to overflowing.

These people are insane.

Yes, they are, but so are a lot of the target audience whew opinions they are trying to sway with their propaganda.

Have to give them credit, they really understand their base and they really know how to appeal to that base.

NPR also has some disgusting views on racial code words.

Double-secret code words...

Wednesday

apple

napkin

chair

lunch

gum

glass

tire

house

dog

writing

walk

go

table

bird

pen

You should immediately report anyone using such words to SPL to be declared a racist bigot.

It is your patriotic duty to The Won.

NPR had some stooges giving the DNC line about the Lybian fiasco. They were all attacking Romney and giving the meme about the video at fault.

No discussioin or consideration of Obama fault. Just “romney had no right to comment”

It is 1979 with the MSM covering for Carter.

NPR is desperatly trying to link obama to clinton while reality links obama to carter.

Okay, but solos overflowing with fuel for rebel soldiers. Which means Ryan wants Florida’s resources to feed a new secession. Is it any coincidence Ryan turned secessionist when we have a black president?/s

Ow, my head hurts from trying to think like this guy. I was used to “states rights” meaning seeking to reimpose slavery. The kool-aid and pb&j stuff was cute. But this doesn’t even make sense.

So, it would be racist to use the phrase “punched in the breadbasket?”.

Also, back to the racist theme: It would probably be more racist to note that Zimbabwe used to be known as “the breadbasket of Southern Africa” before Mugabe implemented his land reforms than to relate the fact that Florida supplied food during the Civil War, and hence was known as the “breadbasket of the South.”

For some actual facts, a little googling indicates there were different areas referenced as the “breadbasket of the South,” prior of course to today’s events.

The main references were to the Shenandoah Valley of VA, with a number of references to various Georgia counties and even to Atlanta, which would seem to have been more of a “bread shipping point.”

Not one reference to Florida for the phrase in 50 Googles.

In any case, VERY little wheat would have come out of FL during the War, though it was a major source of cattle and salt. Which would seem to make it more of a “hamburger basket.”

The Shenandoah Valley was the "Breadbasket of the South" during the Civil War.

Don't know if that was a contemporary epithet or something that historians came up with later.

They actually did grow wheat there, something Florida isn't known for.

Floridians may have had similar traditions, something about their state as the "breadbasket of the Confederacy" -- as do Georgians and Texans -- but it's silly to see this as "dog-whistle" politics.

Don’t even pay attention to it. This is designed to be annoying and create tension.

Call it what it is: Childish.

The Ukraine is also the Breadbasket. I guess that’s racist too.

No, if you punch the breadbasket you’re punching Florida. Which means you’re the Union army marching on with His truth and so forth.

Any word in the dictionary that was spoken by a person in the south before passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is by definition racist.

Along with all words spoken by Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan.
