Modernity requires the willingness to be offended. And as anti-American violence across the Middle East and beyond shows, that willingness is something the Arab world, the heartland of Islam, still lacks.
In the narrative of history transmitted to schoolchildren throughout the Arab world and reinforced by the media, religious scholars and laymen alike, Arabs were favored by divine providence. They had come out of the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century, carrying Islam from Morocco to faraway Indonesia. In the process, they overran the Byzantine and Persian empires, then crossed the Strait of Gibraltar to Iberia, and there they fashioned a brilliant civilization that stood as a rebuke to the intolerance of the European states to the north. Cordoba and Granada were adorned and exalted in the Arab imagination. Andalusia brought together all that the Arabs favored poetry, glamorous courts, philosophers who debated the great issues of the day.
If Islams rise was spectacular, its fall was swift and unsparing. This is the world that the great historian Bernard Lewis explored in his 2002 book What Went Wrong? The blessing of God, seen at work in the ascent of the Muslims, now appeared to desert them. The ruling caliphate, with its base in Baghdad, was torn asunder by a Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Soldiers of fortune from the Turkic Steppes sacked cities and left a legacy of military seizures of power that is still the bane of the Arabs. Little remained of their philosophy and literature, and after the Ottoman Turks overran Arab countries to their south in the 16th century, the Arabs seemed to exit history; they were now subjects of others...
President Obama has taken a different approach. He was sure that his biography the years he spent in Indonesia and his...

...because they are so easily lead
Pretty decent article actually.
Mohammad says Sorry if we offend you Jews and Christians but its the times we live in
Fully half of all registered marriages in Pakistan are between FIRST COUSINS. Men marrying their nieces is not at all unusual!
This has been going on with the Sunnies for hundreds of years. Not quite so much with the Shia, closer to a quarter of the marriages are between first cousins.
Think about it. Your wife and you share grandparents. Think about that. Now, consider that those grandparents also share grandparents!!
Family trees like telephone poles. Generation upon generation, all the way to Esau and Ishmael.
Why do we wonder that they are so easily led into madness?
i didn’t read the full article.
but i was going to say,
that even for the Washington Post,
i have rarely seen 2 paragraphs
so completely full of factual errors.
Because they have nothing about which to be proud.
Because offense-taking is such a useful political tool in a postmodern victimocracy?
and there they fashioned a brilliant civilization that stood as a rebuke to the intolerance of the European states to the north. Cordoba and Granada were adorned and exalted in the Arab imagination. Andalusia
the backwards Arabs, were stunned by the brilliant civilization, that already existed in Persian.
(and large amounts of tolerant Zoastrians).
they never built ANYTHING. their Golden age,
was simply an age of plunder.
built for stealing from Persian, the Christian middle east,
India, and the backs of millions of black slaves.
Spain (Andalusia), was always majority Christian. So the Muslims were slightly more tolerant, to avoid revolt.
“Little remained of their philosophy and literature, “
their seats of power, were never conquered. so why did the Arab philosophy and literature disappear ? ludicrous. especially when much still remains of the REAL brilliant civilizations, literature, etc., of Greeks, Indians, Persians, etc., from centuries earlier.
those 2 sentences alone, are not just factually incorrect,
they also fail any test of logic, in the study of history, anthropology, etc.
Look at the Arabs.
Look at the ghetto culture.
Look at feminists.
It's all the same. They have no real sense of their own worthiness and so they attack others for insufficiently admiring their greatness.
According to the tradition, Imam Ali Ibn Abi-Talib (the prophet's cousin and son-in-law) prophesied that at the End of Times and just before the return of the Mahdi, the Ultimate Saviour, a "tall black man will assume the reins of government in the West." Commanding "the strongest army on earth," the new ruler in the West will carry "a clear sign" from the third imam, whose name was Hussein Ibn Ali. The tradition concludes: "Shiites should have no doubt that he is with us." In a curious coincidence Obama's first and second names--Barack Hussein--mean "the blessing of Hussein" in Arabic and Persian. His family name, Obama, written in the Persian alphabet, reads O Ba Ma, which means "he is with us," the magic formula in Majlisi's tradition.
Not about being true....It's all about what they think is true.
And this widely promoted video in Iran.
There was a great article featured here about a week ago. I can’t find it now. It talked about, well,,, basically the brain damage inflicted by a couple thousand years of inbreeding. Marrying your first cousin. One of the things talked about was anti-social behavior. Not to even mention other birth defects! Wish I could find that article,,,,,,,,,,, It explained a lot! And it wasn’t just talk, it was a medical study report.
Try reading the whole thing - Prof. Ajami isn’t known for his “fatual errors”
A more focused approached with great detail and definition in terms of the Koran, the OIC, ALQaeda, CAIR, ISNA etc and the current Jihadist uprisings is to be found in the intricately detailed and simple to view and hear 5 videos of Maj. S. Coughlin, veteran analyst for the Pentagon and the Executive Branch and the Congress. The entire current game plan is exposed from his research into the Muslim world itself in current historical context.
Just as Rommel’s book was read and understood by Patton, Coughlin has read the Islamist playbook and details the findings allowing prediction of events, even as they occur now. Willful ignorance of the Islamist way, its agenda, milestones is our undoing on this matter. Coughlin shows how everything fits together. The WH relies on MuslimBrotherhood advisors. Coughlin makes the case for the Muslim Brotherhood abandoning reliance on Meccan Koranic scripture and adopting AlQaeda’s Medina scriptures as a basis for operations since 2010, and what this means. What it means is what we are witnessing now in N. Africa and the entire ME.
There is definition in the last video to the 10 year milestone plan ending in 2015, which is in progress right now and includes the relevance of Maj. Hasan in detail to the achievement of the milestones.

It’s not about money, possessions or material progress. It’s about faith. The font of Islamic radicalism for decades has been the Gulf kingdoms, the richest of the Islamic countries. It appears that religious devotion among Muslims increases along with wealth. Unfortunately, Muslim religious devotion means following in the footsteps of Muhammad, who exhorted his followers to conquer the world for Islam and kill all who refuse to convert, and set a personal example by conquering the Persian and Roman empires.

God Bless you Genghis Hkan.
Contrary to what the schools teach about Genghis Khan, his primary goal was commerce. His mongul armies swept across Asia and parts of Europe conquering cities and states. He did not, however, wipe out the populace or change things. When a city was taken, it was converted to a mongul territory, if the leaders did not convert they were eliminated, but he allowed the people to keep their customs, religions and freedoms. There was one exception, Islam. The monguls had so many problems with the muslims that the Khan decided that the only way to deal with muslims was to slaughter them all and raze their cities to dust; and this he did.

From the article:
They know that more than 300 million Arabs have fallen to economic stagnation and cultural decline. They know that the standing of Arab states along the measures that matter political freedom, status of women, economic growth is low.
Muslims know their societies can't compete with the West. It drives many of them to rage. Islam is a very political religion and these people are taught they are the best and everyone else is a heathen, yet here they find themselves mired in stagnation and backwardness in virtually every majority Muslim country. It is very hard for them to face their failure.
But the minority who are.. how can centuries of Islamism's practice of consanguineous marriages be left out as a factor in their irrational, knee-jerk, extremely violent behavior? We freely recognize that European royal families suffered from consanguineous marriages.
There were studies prior to 2001 about Islamism's practice of consanguineous marriages; now such studies can be used to inflame the nut cases. People die and it's blamed on the study.
Moderate Arabs you would think would hasten to calm this but the Islamists world-wide have infiltrated and indoctrinated even in countries like Turkey which has almost a hundred years of reforming Islam and being a democratic Republic. Now the Islamists are back.
The film may have mocked Islam, but Mohammed really was violent. That’s their role model.
There is an orchestrated push on to try to make saying anything offensive against Islam. But it needs to be pointed out that Islam is very offensive to Christianity. They denigrate our God and accuse him of deception. They say our scriptures are full of errors. They say our apostles lied about Jesus. If there is going to be any banning of free speech, we should make it clear it needs to start with banning Islam.
The self hating muslims have accurately assessed the value of islamic culture and found it worthless. They are touchy on this subject because they themselves are the principle component of the worthless culture.
It is a truly odd psychosis.
Islam and it’s book, the quran is not subject to reformation.
Any efforts by the govt’s of Turkey et al. are meaningless.
Christian reformation is entirely different.
The quran is supposed to be “the word of God” as opposed to most of the new and old testament, being “inspired by God”
Therefore, the quran CANNOT be reinterpreted as it would contradict God, well beyond the many existing contradictions, to make it worthless.
Pride comes before the fall.
Mamzelle, you are absolutely correct about inbreeding. But there is much more to the demography.
Polygamy is a hideous social dynamic hardly ever discussed academically or religiously. Where it exists far too many men never have a wife or family, a recipe for violence/conquest. The wealthy men who do have wives acquire and dispose of women according to their fertile years. OBL had 53 brothers and sisters. This causes even more men to be useless, angry drones.
No father can properly raise several dozen children. Mothers must compete viciously for their child’s favorable outcome, so they inadvertently earn the distain accorded “trecherous” women.
In his Satanic wisdom, Mohammed designed an insatiable mercenary force with a sexual imperative to conquer, and if that is impossible they can have boys and female domesticated animals.
Criticizing polygamy should be acceptable due to genetics, anthropology and history. It’s been a colossal failure in other societies besides Muslim.
Fantastic set of videos !!!
This Government, our Government, seems hell bent on hiding what they know or refusing to recognize reality.
How common is it today?
They're offended for the same fundamental reason that a whole bunch of us conservatives are offended.
The modern world doesn't accept the beliefs they've had all their life, from infancy to adulthood.
I'm offended for the same reasons:
PResident Obama has attacked and derided my fundamental beliefs in our justice and legal system, as based on our U.S. Constitution, that this Constitution is the basis of the laws we have today, establishing certain rights and freedoms, that he trashes every day through merely ignoring it and its precedents and/or authoring executive orders in contradiction to its specific language.
But I don't go around rioting, raping, and murdering people because of his actions.
If you search for “Middle East consanguinity” you find all sorts of scholarly articles on the subject. It isn’t pretty.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk did it.. at least he led the conversion from Ottoman Turkey to a secular democratic Republic of Turkey founded in 1923.
The Islamist AK Party has steadily undermined the secular government in Turkey for a decade with lots of help, some say, from American citizen Fethullah Gülen a Turkish imam operating in Turkey and worldwide from a compound in Pennsylvania.
So now one could say "Any efforts
by to thwart the [Islamist government] of Turkey . . . are meaningless."
Or, maybe they’re merely jealous.
Because their “prophet” was an idiot they’re inclined to follow suit.
I would simply suggest that reform attempts are short lived and therefore meaningless as the logic of islam (flawed as it is), once extended to its conclusion make lasting reform untenable.
Why can't they buy a clue in the 21st century?
Thanks for the link.
The standard line. Yawn!
It leaves out the fact that the brief tolerant periods of Islam, like the middle of the Islamic occupation of what had been the kingdom of the Visigoths, were the exceptions and coincided with periods when the Caliphs or other Muslim princes were pragmatic and not particularly pious Muslims, and that the “Golden Age” of Andalusia was destroyed not by the Reconquista, but by the Almohad Caliphate whose religious fervor revived vigorous persecution of Christians and Jews, and from whom the Western Europeans learned the idea of making heresy a capital crime — before that in both East and West Christians followed the Greek fathers who wrote urgently against the execution of heretics.
And, just as the Almohads killed off Islamic tolerance, the universal Muslim rejection of the Islamic Aristotelianism of Avicenna and Averroes in favor of the occasionalism of Ghazali — the piously Muslim ontological position that every event happens by the direct will of Allah — killed of Islamic science.
Normally I defer to the likes of Mr. Ajami but his argument here is faulty. He is clearly on target with his descriptions of Arabs and their self inflicted inferiority but Arabs representonly 30% of Muslims yet the culturally immature behaviors are not limited to Arabs but are found thoughout the Muslim world. Only the religion can be the reason for these behaviors.
Their society was dependent upon a never-ending supply of loot, and slaves who knew how to run a civilization. When they finally ran out of places to loot, they went into decline, until they had a new source of unearned wealth: oil.
They’re not offended; they’re opportunists. Islam is a war plan.
What concept is more modern than the normality of homosexuality? Yet they are as intolerant as Moslems, just less numerous. And just as intolerant to any effort at "conversion."
They imported the concept of zero from India, but they invented the calculus, which originally took the form of a contemplation of divine infinity.
Really? Where? I didn't notice any.
The enthusiasm for effacing and looting/melting/selling the patrimony of antiquity is a Wahhabist tic. That sort of vandalism and mass-murder, which was rampant in southwestern Asia, was and is almost unheard of in Malaya and the East Indies. Only recently with the establishment of Saudi madrassas has that kind of behavior appeared among SE Asian Musselmen -- as one local mufti of the old tradition in the Comoros Islands was quick to point out to PBS and Frontline a few years ago.
The stupas and wats and temples of Buddhist medieval Indonesia and Malaysia are largely undisturbed, and some of them are still occupied and tended by Buddhist monks.
A very wise observation I've heard nowhere else. They've been influenced by us so much that they have the freedom to be outraged by the freedom to be outraged.
