From an International Security Assistance Force Joint Command News Release
KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 15, 2012 International Security Assistance Force officials are providing additional details about the Sept. 14 attack on Camp Bastion in Afghanistans Helmand province in which two coalition service members were killed when insurgents attacked the bases airfield.
Because it is still early in the investigation of this attack, information is subject to change as new details become available, officials said.
The attack commenced just after 10 p.m., officials said, when approximately 15 insurgents executed a well-coordinated attack against the airfield on Camp Bastion. The insurgents, organized into three teams, penetrated at one point of the bases perimeter fence, officials said.
The insurgents appeared to be well-equipped, trained and rehearsed, officials said. Dressed in U.S. Army uniforms and armed with automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and suicide vests, the insurgents attacked coalition fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft parked on the flight line, aircraft hangars and other buildings, officials said.
Six coalition AV-8B Harrier jets were destroyed and two were significantly damaged, said officials, noting three coalition refueling stations were destroyed. Six soft-skin aircraft hangars were damaged to some degree.
Coalition forces engaged the insurgents, killing 14 and wounding one who was taken into custody, officials said.
In addition to the two coalition service members that were killed, nine coalition personnel -- eight military and one civilian contractor -- were wounded in the attack, officials said. None of their injuries are considered life-threatening.
I don’t think that’s tinfoil hat territory, but it’s more likely that a private purchaser could buy the stuff in the US and just ship it, or even more likely, it’s purchased private part on Ebay, or it’s purchased on the black market outside the US. American uniforms, or clothes close enough to pass for GI at a distance, aren’t exactly hen’s teeth.
As to why the “goat bumpers” would want to look like GI’s in order to get suicide vest close to a Harrier...dig up Otto Skorzeny and ask him. The Taliban aren’t exactly decked out in Mess Dress when they are doing their dirty work to begin with, and the threat of being shot as a spy is pretty small potatoes if you are planning to blow yourself up to begin with.
Don’t get my wrong, I despise those maniacs, and I believe we should either be killing them wholesale instead of retail, or leaving them to sit in their own filth and just smacking Hell out of ‘em if they ever bother us again, but they are ruthless and cunning and they certainly won’t let something like an export law or any treaties or rules regarding uniforms bother them.
Terps here wear the same uniforms as the Marines...
Well since they're deployed with our soldiers doesn't it seem logical to dress them the same so that they don't get shot as an enemy combatant?
...at this point I am not knowing.
What interesting phraseology you have.
Also, Ive just been e-mailed by someone on this particular post whos son Ebayd his cammies(without name tags) after he got out.
SO WHAT! There is no restriction on selling personal clothing at this point in time.
Your claim is that the entire uniforms, meaning the associated gear as well, were bought on the Internet. I've shown that there are uniform items that can't be sold except in certain circumstances.
And what about the weapons? How were they armed? Did they arm themselves through the Internet as well?
Did these foreign fighters not have battle helmets on?
Or are you not knowing that either despite your proximity?
“Prayers that our troops get better leadership soon.”
Praying with you.
Praying for your family member and all our brave military in harm’s way..Hope you hear from them soon.
God bless them for their service .
What’s your theory on how and why a bunch of Taliban suicide fanatics would get decked out in US uniforms? These are the same folks who were building SMLE rifles in crude machine shops when the Russians were trying to subjugate the place. I don’t think obtaining or manufacturing clothes is beyond their capabilities.
Flying false flags and wearing enemy uniforms are ruses as old as warfare itself. What makes it so unlikely that these dirtbags would continue an age old practice?
I take it that you are of the opinion that there is no way that they can get this equipment illegally shipped.
That’s right, no gun shop has ever sold weapons to Mexico illegally, because it’s forbidden by law.
The Taliban, in the Leatherneck attack, were not the ones that acquired the equipment, obviously someone higher up the chain knows how to acquire these items.
You have a lot of angst, and I take it you don’t think anything comes in or out of this country illegally.
I really can’t do anything about your belief system.
You started out with that it can’t be purchased,,,it can.
Then you said it can’t get out of the country illegally....stuff has.
The only thing I’m struggling to understand is why still the angst?
I take it your still upset with me mentioning that it can be bought on-line.
Some people just don’t understand the big picture in Afghanistan. Many supply caravan trucks are driven by locals and in many cases protected by locals. Some protection forces have given up routes to the Taliban and trucks have been seized by the Taliban. Low tech supplies like clothing could easily be obtained by the Taliban.
The main problem is that we are trying to make this land of a thousand tribes one civilized nation, and that isn’t going to happen, especially as long as they embrace Islam. We need to drop our ROE and withdrawl all troops and resources from that God forsaken country. If they rise up again, we can bomb them from the air. This “nation building” idea is a complete and total waste of time, lives, and money.
A better course would be to simply kill Taliban and their families. Their locations are known and they should simply be killed off, by the thousands. The families are the shields that prevent death. The shields should be removed by destruction.
The zealotry that provides Taliban motivation should be reason enough to kill them off, all of them, wives, children, mothers, grandmothers ......all
Their protection allows their existence that allows them to support the efforts of the menfolk. They are the enemy as well and must be destroyed.
Actually, the root of Islamic terrorism is.......ISLAM. If we were serious about destroying Islamic terror, then you need to destroy the root Islam. There are ways to do that. One would be for a President to declare to the world that unless Islamic terror stops in say 5 days, Mecca, Medina and any other city providing support for Islam would be nuked. Then after the alloted days, nuke said cities.
This would show that Allah is fake or impotent and it would elliminate on of the pillars of Islam necessary for entry into their ‘heaven’, the haj to Mecca. I’m not going to hold my breath, because the leaders of today are not man enough to truely see the problem and embrace the necessary solution.
drivel..... you assume a homogeneity that does not exist
Yet you somehow span the gamut from it being illegally shipped there to a company there sold it to them.
I assume nothing. You’ve been to Saudi Arabia, so you should then understand the importance that Mecca and the haj mean to Muslims. But then maybe you are a Muslim and the truth of which I speak hits too close to home, or you just don’t have the guts to admit I’m right. Either way, it doesn’t matter.
Your approach, while somewhat effective in the short run (the Russians tried it while they where in Afghanistan) is not effective in the long run.
Nice try. I never said it was unlikely. I'm simply questioning how they got the uniforms and gear.
"They bought it on the Internet" just don't cut it in my book.
The uniforms themselves...granted, it can be legally done.
The gear itself...I ain't buying it.
Prince Harry targeted in fatal Taliban attack on 'impregnable' military base Senior defence sources have told The Sunday Telegraph that the Taliban launched the attack after posing as farmers in a near by maize plantation.
So now there are no US Army uniforms at all...
unless they were pretending to be US Army farmers too. /sarcasm
See my tagline
that video got pulled.........
