In what is perhaps any filmmaker's best-dream scenario, President Barack Obama has issued a public response to the movie "2016: Obama's America" through his White House team. Although the film is criticized on the president's website, co-producer Dinesh D'Souza welcomed the opportunity to talk about the movie's success at the box office even without much media attention or an endorsement from Obama.
"I welcome Obama's critique of the film. He has probably figured out that he cannot ignore it any longer," said D'Souza in an interview published on Deadline.com.
"Obama's response is a characteristic mix of name calling and false allegations. Some of the claims he makes refer to things that are not even in the film. Elsewhere Obama just gets it wrong."
Obama's "Truth Team" blog post last week with the headline, "'2016: Obama's America' is a deliberate distortion of President Obama's record and world view," includes digs against D'Souza.
"A self-proclaimed expert on the President, D'Souza bases the film around his own past works, which were previously described as 'the worst kind of smear journalism,' and riddled with 'lazy' errors," according to the president's website. "The result is what Variety calls a 'cavalcade of conspiracy theories, psycho-politico conjectures and incendiary labeling' and what the L.A. Times labels a 'badly disguised and overly long attack ad.'"
D'Souza told The Christian Post at the time of the film's release in late July that the film is broken down into two parts. "One looks backward into Obama's past and the other looks forward into what we can expect over the next four years. There's roughly equal time in the movie to both themes. The movie is also based on two books my earlier book, The Roots of Obama's Rage (2010), and a new book called Obama's America. The earlier book looks back and the new book looks forward, and the movie combines both," he said.
A dispute over the movie's facts is nothing new for D'Souza, who last week suggested that The Associated Press, a not-for-profit cooperative newswire service owned by 1,500 U.S. newspapers, apologize for a fact check story on his movie.
In the interview with Deadline he answered the question as to how he responds to the claim the film is racist.
"There have been some factual attempts to puncture the film but those I think have not worked. So now we have the sleezeball attack," D'Souza said. "Basically an attempt to blacken my name and imply the film is some sort of a birther type film, which it most emphatically is not, or to suggest that there is some racial element in the film. Whereas in reality I go out of my way to diffuse the race issue to say this is not about race.
"What Obama is about, in my opinion, is he is a Global redistributionist. He's pursuing reparations but it's not racial reparations. It's global reparations for the sins and conquest of [colonialism]," he continued in his answer to Deadline. "So the film is manifestly not racial. Now it does explain that part of Obama's appeal is that he, you know, offers White America the certificate of racial absolution, if you will. That he makes people feel good about voting for him, as if by doing that they are somehow transcending America's racial past. But that hardly makes the film a racial film.
That's simply part of the film's intelligent analysis of what's going on out there."
The movie has earned more than $26.1 million as of Tuesday, making it the second-highest grossest political documentary ever. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" is the highest earner, taking in $119.2 million in 2004.
"The box office success is a reaction to a much larger issue of the American public not feeling that they know their president after four years," John Sullivan, the film's co-writer and director told CP on Wednesday. "We continue to be humbled by the response the film has gotten. Just today we learned of two groups taking out their own newspaper ads encouraging people to see the film. It is this type of effort, where someone will spend their own money to promote '2016' that demonstrates this film is touching a deep chord in America."
“Go ahead. Make my day!”
It just passed $30 million at the box office.
#5 documentary of all-time.
#2 political documentary.
I havent seen it yet due to budgetary restrictions but I figure as a Freeper I already know whats in there. I do salute and continue to admire the body of work from Dinesh D’Souza. God bless our fellow Patriot. We must rid our country of Obama and as many Democrats from the House as possible. Romney was not my choice but I fully back him to beat Obama. I dont believe the skewed polls, America will go to decide in November and Obama will suffer an enormous defeat. God have mercy on America.
It’s up to almost $30 million and still beating “Lawless.” Go see it if you haven’t. Go see it again (or buy another ticket) if you have.
All that without the free publicity and promotion that the MSM provided to Michael Moore.
If 0bama wins in November, by 2016 D`Souza and other movie producers and book authors who deign to offend 0bama will find themselves having criminal charges trumped up against them and show trials will be commonplace.
D’souza is awesome ! He should have spoken during the Republi cnvention
I just saw it today. I thought I knew what was in it -- I was wrong.
Obama is the biggest threat to America as we knew and loved her that has ever arisen. He has already produced enormous change, and is going to produce more.
The film explains why he hates the US, and how he is going to change us. Without giving away too much, all I can say is there are reasons why he is on this path and that it will lead to the profligate destruction of wealth. Not transfer of wealth to the poor, out and out destruction.
Dinesh D’Souza is a great example of positive aspects of well educated legal immigrants. We can use a lot more of those versus unskilled illegals who end up drawing all kinds of welfare benefits from hard working tax payers.
When I saw it one lady shouted ‘Vote for Romney’ at the end of the film. I shouted ‘Romney-Ryan 2012’ and there was catharsis in the crowd. Some were awakened.. I heard ‘Wow’s’.. Can’t criticize anyone who attends because it shows they know something’s wrong and wanted to investigate.
My wife & I saw “2016” two weeks ago. Worth every penny if you don’t pay $5.00 for a soda & $8.00 for a bucket of popcorn (you won’t get hungry or thirsty anyway, go out for dinner afterward for a lot less).
Nothing in that flick which isn’t the cold, hard truth. If Obama sends his flying monkeys after Dinesh D’Souza, he’s even stupider & more arrogant than we even thought.
Go see it and learn and run up their receipts, this is the cinema version of the Chick Fil-A counterprotest.
The wife and I saw this flick on Saturday past. I thought I knew what this film was about, but.....I was dead wrong. This anti-Obama movie is awesome and....right on the mark!!! You know, there are millions of devoted conservatives out there in America land. I just wish they would get off their butts.... and haul out with the family to see this informative, truthful movie. It nails Obama to a “T”!!! If Obama is re-elected, it will be because some of “our” kindred spirits “bitched”, but....did nothing concrete about it to save our nation!!!
Our country is at stake, and “all” Americans should witness and view this wonderful work by Dinesh D’Sousa. Please get out there folks and support this film and....”Last Ounce of Courage” a movie just released this weekend, heavily supported by Chuck Norris. It is an excellent, powerful, film about freedom, family & religion.
I just wish, I could figure out a way to get “2016: Obama’s America” shown as a special on Fox News Network, say....on a Sunday evening a few weeks out before the election!!! Any ideas, Freepers or Jim Robinson!!! We all need to do something to get our message out to millions of the folks!!! Maybe we can get a rich uncle or kindred spirit donor to bankroll the flick onto TV screens so the entire country can view it!!!
“”I just saw it today. I thought I knew what was in it — I was wrong.””
My husbnd and I went to see it this last week and I felt the same way you did. I didn’t want to know anymore about the jerk than I already did but so many people were urging us to go..said we wouldn’t regret it.
I have to say the very end does hit you right between the eyes with his interview with Daniel Pipes. We walked out with some ladies and talked on our way to the parking lot. By the time we got there, we were in tears. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?
I knew by the time we got home that that man doesn’t give a plug nickel for any program or policy he puts forth as the leader of our country. He has one goal and one goal only. I felt it somewhat BEFORE the movie but it became crystal clear after the movie.
I no longer have to ask myself how on earth he can say or believe the things he does! He DOESN’T. All smoke and mirrors. A certain relief to me in a way. I would hate to think there is really someone that dumb elected as president in this country. A man with a mission and he needs 4 more years to fulfill HIS dream!
My husband and I saw it for the second time today.
“”Last Ounce of Courage a movie just released this weekend, heavily supported by Chuck Norris. It is an excellent, powerful, film about freedom, family & religion.””
I just looked up the schedule for this in our area. We’d been to 2 movies in the past 6 years before “2016” and seeing this and then plan on Atlas Shrugged Part II on October 12, will set a record for us. All worth it - IMO....
I agree, D’Souza is a great speaker. He narrates the film very well and his books are good solid conservatism. He is one of my favorites on the conservative side.
I haven’t watched this movie and I’m one of those people that thinks they know what’s in it...but I really believe this movie is damaging Obama more than people realize.
>> D`Souza and other movie producers and book authors who deign to offend 0bama
The precedent was recently set; offend America’s enemies, and the man with the pen is publicly excoriated and detained for questioning.
How about that, all you faux evangelists of the 1st Amendment?
A lot of D’Souza’s theories would make more sense if President Obama and his father were the same person.
Has Obama ever cut himself off from the Communist beliefs of his parents and grandparents, and the anti-colonialism of his alleged padre?
What do you mean? Have you seen the movie yet? (I haven't.)
See this compilation of Eastwood's GOP speech and the Superbowl ad...
A gritty gut wrenching indictment of Obambi policies in 2 mins and 39 seconds
Folks...this is the “real” movie that has the Muslims in the WH in an uproar, not the little trailer on the internet...lol. This has got to be peeing him off to no ends. I doubt that he has ever faced most of those demons from his childhood...now, before the entire nation....the emperor has no clothes.
This da** president has time for everything except his job. Imagine that! Now, he’s a film critic too.
We went to see it a couple of weeks ago; and it was ON THE MONEY. De Souza was a patriot to do this film; and a patriot for not letting Obama bully him into pulling it.
Wouldn’t it be cool if churches organized (Barry’s favorite word) a trip to the movies after services on Sunday?
Or someone with money could make a “gift” of an afternoon movie to those in retirement homes—including busing them in?
Wish I had the dough to do it, but, alas, I’m living in Obama’s economy.
Uh. ‘Scuse me. “Dreams From My Father” was a book written by Obama. In fact, DeSouza shows that Obama has taken on the psychological burden that his father created as a sort of life’s tribute to a father that was based on the rage and hatred of the typical paranoid Marxist. Lolo Soetoro was a better example of a seemingly realistic man trying to make a living for his family. Dunham’s dedication to her Communist dogma overrode what might have allowed Barry to be normal and herself a less dramatic life.
It’s now sold 3.7 million tickets, which is more than An Inconvenient Truth. So you can see the difference between a cultural phenomenon and a media-created phenomenon. Unfortunately everyone in the country hears a whole lot more about what the media wants you to hear about even when less people care about it.
However, 2016 is declining in popularity now. In the last week it made $4 million, but in the previous weeks it made $7 million, $9 million and $8 million. I wonder if people are just bored with the idea of Obama after seeing his ho-hum DNC speech. 2016 will hit position #4 on the all-time documentaries list, but if you adjust that list for inflation, it will probably stay where it is now at #5.
I used to talk to Dinesh at the Heritage Foundation’s “3rd Generation” lecture series in the early/mid 90’s. He was a bit younger with a boyish smile, but he was sharp as a Gensu knife, extremely astute about politics and ideology, and knew how to hit his target.
Glad to see that the “kid” has gotten better, like a fine, wine, with age.
Can’t wait to see what his has in store for the marxists in the new year.
Oh wait, the New Year (Jewish New Year) is here today. Dinesh, go to it! and Have a Happy Roshasanoh.
We should encourage the hosts of Fox News and the many radio Conservative talk show hosts to see it. Many of them do not begin to realize who BO really is.
“A lot of DSouzas theories would make more sense if President Obama and his father were the same person.”
There’s a reason why D’Souza narrows the scope of his discussion to exclude arguments over Obama’s place of birth or speculation concerning who sired him. DSouza’s declared methodology is to accept everything Obama has said or written about himself as the literal truth, then proceed from there.
“A lot of DSouzas theories would make more sense if President Obama and his father were the same person.”
Please disregard my post. I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about.
I have thought many times about the courage it took to make this movie...God bless him.
I bet Michelle is vacationing w/ Jarrett, I haven’t seen the ole dudette lately.
You know I am so positively worked up over these tow films, “2016: Obama’s America” and “Last Ounce of Courage”, I an going to e-mail Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham, and...many more TV & Radio Talk Hosts.....telling them to get on this right away and play up these flicks big time. You also gave me another excellent idea, contacting church groups, which, now, I will also undertake.
I am however, only one person. Could use some help from “our’ grass roots kindred spirits. Jim Robinson, can you help in any small way...and trumpart the causes of these two excellent movies.
Don't waste your time on this person. I suspect that "wideminded" is possibly one of those whose mind is so opened so wide that it lets in Dim spin. Read his/her posts: wideminded's posts
The comments are primarily "corrections" of conservative thought. Doesn't usually respond to direct posts. In other words, a concern troll.
-— Nothing in that flick which isnt the cold, hard truth. If Obama sends his flying monkeys after Dinesh DSouza, hes even stupider & more arrogant than we even thought.-—
He’s more stupid and arrogant than I thought, four years ago. I knew he was a commie. But his childishness is breathtaking.
His attack is giving the movie a second life. But he’s so upset by anyone contradicting him that he can’t act in his own interest by keeping his mouth shut.
If Odumbo is reelcted, we can blame the media and school-propagandized youth. If, thanks be to God, we pull out this election, we need to revolt against these institutions.
D'Souza has a theory that a major way to understand Obama is by assuming that he is channeling his father's anti-colonial feelings. This doesn't make any sense to me since Obama apparently only spent a few days with his father in his entire life. Even most people who get to spend a lot of time with their parents do not end up thinking exactly like them. It just seems to me that this is the type of provocative but big-stretch idea that academics sometimes like to engage in.
I haven't seen the movie nor read "Root of Obama's Rage". I have heard D'Souza speaking on C-SPAN on multiple occasions. I do agree with some of the things he says.
Scuse me. Dreams From My Father was a book written by Obama.
If "Dreams from My Father" was about his father's dreams, you would have a major point. But as I recall, it is not.
In fact, DeSouza shows that Obama has taken on the psychological burden that his father created as a sort of lifes tribute to a father that was based on the rage and hatred of the typical paranoid Marxist.
Doesn't that sound like one of those convoluted psychiatric theories that ultimately don't make sense?
I haven’t read the book and haven’t seen the movie, although I have read D’Souza essays on the subject, so I think I know his thesis, and I ask why not take Obama at his word when he says as clear as can be: Dreams From My Father? And is it about his father’s dreams or as other reviewers interpreted it, his dreams?
The comments are primarily "corrections" of conservative thought.
Looking back through my posts for which you kindly posted a link, I agree that I do often post with corrections (although that is not all I post). But I never correct people's thoughts, only factual misstatements. And it hardly ever happens that someone says that the corrected fact I have presented is wrong, because I do research on the things that I post.
I recognize that correcting people can sometimes be an annoying trait, although I try to be polite. And maybe I do sometimes get a little bit of sick pleasure out of having a hunch that something is wrong and then proving that I am correct.
One the other hand I feel that "conservative thought" can stand on its own. It shouldn't be necessary to support it with misinformation. I am not a person who feels that it is OK to lie about something in support of a greater cause except perhaps in very limited extreme circumstances.
Doesn't usually respond to direct posts.
I usually respond to direct posts although sometimes I don't immediately have time to do so, and when I finally do, it's not clear that it is worth continuing a discussion from days earlier. I'm not on here as much any more.
I tried to find out if you (arasina) had posted me and I didn't respond. I couldn't find one of these posts but if you remind me about it I'll answer you.
Which is more likely: that a child abandoned by his father will sometimes dream about or imagine him; or that the child will somehow totally absorb the father's way of thinking, which he has no way of knowing?
Stanley Ann kept Obama Sr’s. memory and theories alive for Obama (Li’l. Jr.). His father was a hero in his mind, just as all children want their parents to be heroes. They were her theories, too. She kicked Soetoro to the curb when he wouldn’t go along with her anarchist theories. Obama’s behavior toward our allies (Gr. Britain) has been embarrassing; he could wish for a day when he was worth Winston Churchill’s little finger! His kowtowing to the Muslims has resulted in them seeing him as WEAK - he IS - and in this disastrous current situation. - By his fruits, I know him well enough that I’m not voting for him, never voted for him, never shall vote for him.
At this point, my patience with giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, given the abuses of power and privilege he and Michelle have engaged in, is long ago at an end. DeSouza’s explanation of Obama’s actions which have resulted in the “Arab Spring” that has turned the Middle East over to the Muslim Brotherhood seem entirely plausible to me. Even if that’s not the explanation for Obama; something not so good IS the explanation for Obama - and I’m not content to twiddle my thumbs waiting for Wideminded to go along with it. DeSouza’s explanation is, I’d wager, certainly at least as plausible as Wideminded’s explanation.
