WASHINGTON, DC – Special Operations Speaks (SOS) today called upon Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to resign from office for his claim that Barack Obama had special authority to provide classified information about the Navy SEAL attack on Osama bin Laden to Hollywood filmmakers and others with no security clearance.

Panetta made the claim in a September 10th interview on CBS This Morning. As he threatened to punish former Navy SEAL “Mark Owen” for revealing details about the assault on the bin Laden compound in his book No Easy Day, he stated that Department of Defense release of top secret information to Hollywood filmmakers “…were authorized by the President of the United States, who has that authority…”

So it's OK for the Obama Administration to leak sensitive information about our Special Forces weapons and tactics to Hollywood producers so they can use them in a movie and spread a false, self serving version of the events leading to aggrandize the President

It's another thing for one of the actual members of the operation publishing the true story which casts the President in a less favorable light.

From a legal perspective, yes.

Obama is, unfortunately, the President. The author of "No Easy Day" is not, and also has not had declassification authority delegated to him by the President.

Regardless the legality of such a move, the more salient point, to me, is that if there were negative National Security implications to such public revelations, if our methods or resources were impugned, or if people who aided us are now being tortured in foreign rat-hole jails as a result of these divulgences...

...then Barbie O'Bunghole has his rancid paw-prints all over those treasonous realities, all of which auger very directly to the detriment of the United States' international posture and strategic policies.

He has abdicated his Oath of Office for some cheap (ignorant) votes. He is scum.

Of course, but it seems that Obama instructed people in the Military and the CIA to give his Hollywood friends and campaign donors debriefs, tours of classified facilities and access to operational and intelligence gathering methods without declassifying the information before presenting it private individuals with no security clearances or confidentiality agreement and with the intent that the information could be Incorporated into a motion picture.

It was only after National Security leaks became a public issue and Congress started calling for investigations and prosecutions that Obama declassified to try lessen the charges that could be pressed keep his aides who were leaking secret information to make the President look good. Admittedly, that's kind of a unique situation that was never spelled out explicitly in law, probably because no one in their wildest dreams could have expected a sitting President to be so irresponsible with National Security and the disclosure of classified, secret information. The only other time I can remember anything remotely similar was when Jimmy Carter told the world about the ongoing development of the then secret B2 Stealth bomber and the existence of radar evading Stealth Technology to justify his very unpopular decision to cancel the B1 when the political fallout from his cancellation of the B1 program was hurting him badly in the polls for his 1980 re election campaign. Come to think of it, there seem to a lot of parallels between Jimmy Cater and Obama these days and it seems history is repeating itself to a remarkable degree with Obama

Obama has "special authority" from whom? Is it in the Constitution? Does he get it from himself? Does he get special authority from Panetta? Who gives Obama the authority to put American's in harms way?

think about it....the president has full authority to determine what is and what isn't classified information. If the president divulges classified information, it is simply no longer classified.

if you don't think that he has that authority, who does???

*””He’s the ultimate classification and declassification authority.””*

That is true, we all got into this probably in 2009, and the answer is just that, the President is top of the security food chain.

Here are a couple of links to old threads.

"From a legal perspective, Panetta is correct. The President has effectively unlimited authority to classify and declassify information."

I agree with your assessment. So....all the information the President provided to Hollywood about SEAL Team 6 and related TTP (Read: Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures) is now UNCLASSIFIED. I guess the former SEAL has a pretty air tight case about his book wouldn't you think?

Panetta and the rest of these morons have no clue how the release of this information to the public compromises TTP, unit names, organizations, and future missions.

obama and the DOJ now have a pretty slippery slope to traverse if they want to press forward with this case. obama, in his haste to showboat in front of the camera's, announced bin Laden's death and negated the value of all the intel that was captured in that raid.
This book gives the obama administration a black eye because it was written by someone who was actually there, and not by the WH propaganda machine, and I would dare say that it also upstaged some perfumed prince at the Pentagon who wanted to do the same thing.

It won't look good for them.
