Over the past 48 hours we have written much, describing the perfectly expected surge in nationalist fervor and anti-Japanese sentiment, as the Senkaku Islands Snafu hits its boiling point....

Instead we'll let the pictures do the talking.

This is very scary to me. I have Japanese friends in China now.

Was long wondering when a bunch of dictators would coordinate simultaneous actions to overwhelm a badly led USA.

Aw shit they finally did.

The Chinese have trouble coordinating their own government agencies, much less with other countries in some grand conspiracy.

Yup, and all with tons and tons of fresh young unemployed bodies to throw onto the front lines. Not looking good, not looking good at all.

Nobody can riot like an Asian.

I have to say — for a staged, government-approved riot, community-organized par excellence, it got ultra violent.

Good gawd. We’re a “Toyota Family”. Is this going to spread here? IOW....with all of the “Occupy” $hit......are people going to be labeled an ‘enemy’ because we drive particular cars? (It’s already started with SUV’s and looking down on them.)

Am I going to have to hide my “perceived wealth” from people? Wear a “government approved garment”? Hide my Coach and Fendi leather bags from public view?

Japanese invasion and subsequent atrocities of the 1930s not forgotten either I’m sure.

Um, front lines where? Russia?

The Chinese military has been rapidly reducing its total troop strength for many years now.

A bunch of untrained conscripts are utterly useless in a naval war.

The main problem here is that the Chinese military is well aware they can't stand up to the Japanese in a fight, but the Chinese populace is not.

“Coordinate” in this case being no more complicated than the lot of them going “oh crap, just 4 months until the USA gets a competent president again - if I’m gonna beat the crap out of anybody now is the best time to do it.”

Well Japan did not make any friends in China by their actions during the 1930s and 40s.

The Chinese are furious, but they started this round of escalating tension by claiming vast areas of the South China Sea, and only a few weeks ago settling Chinese on a small island in the Sea and claiming a vast new area as a new province. Either China’s neighbors would back down and let them have it, or they would react. Japan reacted by claiming their own nearby disputed islands just as the Chinese did.

Yes, but isn’t the average age for the Japanese about 75 right now? They are definitely a decaying country.

Also, someone asked why the Japanese would pick now to heat up this conflict. Anybody have any ideas? Seems rather stupid to me.

As for the Chinese, the leaders are more than happy to have people upset over an external enemy rather than being upset with them for the problems in their economy.

Unfortunately, we live in interesting times.

Missing from the map: China also recently took the Paracel and Spratly islands between Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.

I read that the islands were owned by a private individual and sold to the Japanese. Maybe the Japanese figured, `You snooze, you lose.’
No idea why the dispute except perhaps, as you point out, that the Chinese are having domestic troubles. If you read `The Rape of Nanking’ you can understand why the Chinese are still chapped.
The Japanese are in a demographic death spiral. Just recently they recorded more deaths than births.
In any event, I’m pretty sure that all the problems here are Bush’s fault. Obama should jet over, lecture everyone not to act stupidly and buy beers all around.
1.3 billion beers (and that’s just China) let’s see—I’m going to have to take my shoes off ...

And from one of the captions under photos, as I've been saying,...

"A banner on a store called pattad reads: 'pattad firmly defends China's right to the Diaoyu Islands...We will give a 20% discount to customers who yell JAPAN ALSO BELONGS TO CHINA!'"

...the belief in China that Chinese first settled Japan. See?
