Stuart Stevens, Mitt Romneys top strategist, knew his candidates convention speech needed a memorable mix of loft and grace if he was going to bound out of Tampa with an authentic chance to win the presidency. So Stevens, bypassing the speechwriting staff at the campaigns Boston headquarters, assigned the sensitive task of drafting it to Peter Wehner, a veteran of the last three Republican White Houses and one of the partys smarter wordsmiths.
Not a word Wehner wrote was ever spoken.
Stevens junked the entire thing, setting off a chaotic, eight-day scramble that would produce an hour of prime-time problems for Romney, including Clint Eastwoods meandering monologue to an empty chair.
Romneys convention stumbles have provoked weeks of public griping and internal sniping about not only Romney but also his mercurial campaign muse, Stevens. Viewed warily by conservatives, known for his impulsiveness and described by a colleague as a tortured artist, Stevens has become the leading staff scapegoat for a campaign that suddenly is behind in a race that had been expected to stay neck and neck through Nov. 6.
This article is based on accounts from Romney aides, advisers and friends, most of whom refused to speak on the record because they were recounting private discussions and offering direct criticism of the candidate and his staff, Stevens in particular.
Stevens, in a lengthy interview Sunday afternoon, defended the campaigns performance, refused to discuss internal conversations and insisted Romney is doing far better than the pundits portray. Like all campaigns, we have good days and bad days. Im happy to take responsibility for the bad days, he said. This is a tremendously talented team.

in-freaking-credible.
we have had a TERRORIST attack on our soverign territory in Libya and Politico is attacking Romney.
then my wife had on Morning Jerk on MSNBC and this is what they are talking about....not about the attack or the POSOTUS doing NOTHING about it.
Had 0bama been president in 2001 they would have been trying to find Republicans to blame for 9/11
Well, it’s not hard to agree they had a colossal oversight when Romney did not include a salute to troops serving in war zones, and did not mention Al Qaeda or Afghanistan. This certainly put him on the defensive on national security and foreign policy just as the Middle East was about to erupt.
Also, there was not a compelling, policy backed argument for credible change that conservatives could get behind. This could have also spoken to many others as well.
Romney has lost his way.

He was lost before he started on this trip.
How easily you people buy into this propaganda amazes me.
I figured maybe they would be writing about odumbo not calling Egypt an ally, hating God and Jerusalem, not acting on intelligence that could of saved lives in our embassy.
I forgot this piece came straight from team odumbo and this is supposed to be news funny
As long as Mitt keeps his double digit lead with indies this election is over
Are you sure that article is not from Pravda?
This is the dim meme of the week all nicely packaged here for a monday morning. More talk about Romney instead of the kenyans failures. Don’t buy it.
Great Facepalm BTW
here is a little something that may interest you about WORF
You must mean the Pravda of the Soviet era. Today, Pravda is more believable than 95% of the US mainscream media.
Do you really "hate to say" it, or are you trying to dampen enthusiasm for Republicans who need to beat Obama? Politico is written by leftists so don't give them your business by reading the garbage on their website. Take this opinion-laded "news" piece that you posted. One quote tells you everything about their slant.
Stevens junked the entire thing, setting off a chaotic, eight-day scramble that would produce an hour of prime-time problems for Romney, including Clint Eastwoods meandering monologue to an empty chair.
Clint Eastwood's meandering monologue to an empty chair? That was a problem for OBAMA, not Romney, you fool!
By the way:
Remember that time a political candidate ran for president and nobody on his staff disagreed about anything or tried to downplay the effectiveness of others on the team in order to advance themselves?
Those phoney polls as well as Democom talking points has been to minimize Romney’s powerfull rebuttal to Obama’s disasterous mid east policies.
This then gets amplified by so called “conservative talk shows”. The publisher of Real Clear Politics has a Sunday night talkie over Chicago’s WLS. He had Sununu on his show 9/16 . One of his writers who also was guesting begans peppering GHWB’s former foreign policy advisor insisting that Romney’s statements about Bengazi et al should not have been made. That show was followed by Cunningham who continued blasting away at Romney.
You are discussing Politico, an arm of the Obama campaign. Of course, they will say this, Chicken Little.
Oops, no offense intended. Should have left that last bit off.
Mitt Romney isn’t going to get people to vote for him because they like him, I don’t like him....people are going to vote for Romney out of fear of what a second Obama term will do for the country....and that is what Mitt needs to emphasize if he is to win.
You are right. It happens day after day after day and you would think that Freepers should know better.
Time to climb back aboard the Eldridge, Morris.
