And Now Let Us Gasp In Astonishment At What Just Happened To The Newspaper Business

Below, via Mark J. Perry and Bill Gross, is a chart we've run before. It shows inflation-adjusted newspaper advertising revenue over the past 60 years.

Thanks to the precipitous decline in the last ~7 years, the industry is now back to where we it was in 1950. And it's only slightly better off when you factor in online revenue.

The NJ paper (News Tribune, later TNT, now Home News Tribune) I grew up with is now about 20 pages total. About 2-3 pages of world news, 2-3 of local news, a couple of sports, obits (for which they now charge an exhorbitant fee), comics.

A far cry from the fat papers we used to get. Heck, we used to get them twice a day (morning & evening editions).

Now, meh.

I wonder of Barry has promised a big subsidy to "save" the newspaper industry. It would explain their 24/7 campaign to reelect the President.

Such promises if made would be very difficult to keep secret.

Those in the news industry do not need financial incentives to promote and protect Obama. These people are true believers in Leftist Socialist ideals not to mention racial preferences.

Those practicing journalism today are graduates of Liberal Arts colleges with the emphasis on LIBERAL. These people are the products of Liberal indoctrination whose goals are to change the world to better fit their Leftist ideals.

Yes these people want a paycheck but they chose their profession to accomplish a mission. That mission is a geo-political world in which their socialist ideals are realized; Obama more than any other President of the past embodies those ideals. They will fight for him; some of them may even consider dying for him.

They certainly have no trouble lying, cheating and stealing for him.

Didn’t take long for alt media to take over. “...this is the way the world ends: not with a bang but a whimper.” - T. S. Eliot

They might recover if they printed real honest fair news and kept opinions on the opinion page.

Yes. I have to confess that for years it was well known that most of the news was OK, but you had to steer clear of the editorial section, where the nest of left wing vipers lay.

But you can only kick a dog so many times before he turns around and takes a chunk out of your leg, and when I stumbled upon their "slobbering" adoration of Hussein, I knew that no matter how many coupons the Sunday paper had, it was time to go. This dog had taken all he was going to take!

I would bet network TV news is following the same curve.

The most important thing is that newspapers lost advertisers to online advertisers. The absolute peak of that chart is also the year Craigslist, an online classified ads website not owned by any newspaper, turned into a public company. Currently, 60 million people use Craigslist every month. It was the loss of classified ads that really hurt newspapers.

I know of many who had quit the papers because of the jaded editorials and biased reporting. The Commercial Appeal (Memphis TN.) also “chastised” voters in surburban areas for not voting the way the CA had endorsed. I know of several who stopped the paper after the Sunday Doonesbury “comic” strip that appeared in the comic section and not the editorial section that reffered to members of the United States Military and especially the Marine Corps as losers.

If I’m eating breakfast out and alone I still buy one and glance through it and work the crossword, that’s what I miss most about the paper but this particular morning, several years ago my eye caught a small article that I believe was on the editorial page. It stated that contrary to rumors and statements about them losing customers that the only ones they had lost were those who moved out of their area or THOSE WHO WOULDN’T PAY AND HAD TO BE CUT-OFF. Those lying B@$&*!%^.

If the newspaper owners could figure out how to market their product electronically, they would be fine.

That would require:

1) Telling the truth about the failures of social democracy.

2) Lowering the online subscription cost to about $10/year.

I don't think any of our existing newspapers can handle either change.

Two weeks ago I canceled my subscription to the Wall Street Journal...$455 a year is just too much for a paper that won’t vigorously defend capitalism in this age of Obamanomics.

If all the news commentary is going to be neo-soviet news commentary, like it is now, people are better off without it. One state controlled service could do the job of all the neo-soviet papers and the neo-soviet alphabets.

P.O.E., I recall in those good ole days, we had 5 editions in the Chicago 4 majors newspapers.. The last being a midnight, overnight rap-up..

Some folks would wait at our downtown paper stand, even in the extreme weather, for the most recent edition to be dropped off the truck so they had the latest news to read on the streetcar on their way home..

Further, we also had EXTRA EDITIONS, when some extraordinary story broke.. The last time I shouted..”EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT” was the death of Joseph Stalin..

PSALM 37

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
and gnash their teeth at them;
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.
14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are upright.
15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,
and their bows will be broken.
16 Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked;
17 for the power of the wicked will be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.

May it be soon, O Lord, may it be soon ... Amen

It is, and not just the news.

My sister and brother in law work in advertising. It is dying. Not only are people using the DVR to skip the commercials (which the people providing the DVR can see), but more and more people are watching over the Internet.

The buyers can also monitor ad clicks from Internet ads, and know that that is declining as well. The way things are going, we may see all of the entertainment options we grew up with die out.

I cancelled my subscription to the local paper when they endorsed hussein in 2008 and I let them know the reason. Didn’t seem to matter much to them. They are still printing their liberal garbage. It’s amazing how entire industries are willing to write off potential profits from half the country for the sake of their liberal ideology and their “historic” _resident.
