Some black clergy see no good presidential choice between a Mormon candidate and one who supports gay marriage, so they are telling their flocks to stay home on Election Day.
The pastors say their congregants are asking how a true Christian could back same-sex marriage, as President Barack Obama did in May. As for Republican Mitt Romney, the first Mormon nominee from a major party, congregants are questioning the theology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its former ban on men of African descent in the priesthood.
In 2008, Obama won 95 percent of black voters and is likely to get an overwhelming majority again. But any loss of votes would sting.
"When President Obama made the public statement on gay marriage, I think it put a question in our minds as to what direction he's taking the nation," said the Rev. A.R. Bernard, founder of the predominantly African-American Christian Cultural Center in New York. Bernard, whose endorsement is much sought-after in New York and beyond, voted for Obama in 2008. He said he's unsure how he'll vote this year.
It's unclear just how widespread the sentiment is that African-American Christians would be better off not voting at all. Many pastors have said that despite their misgivings about the candidates, blacks have fought too hard for the vote to ever stay away from the polls.
Black church leaders have begun get-out-the-vote efforts Yet, Bryant last month told The Washington Informer, an African-American newsweekly, "This is the first time in black church history that I'm aware of that black pastors have encouraged their parishioners not to vote." Bryant, who opposes gay marriage, said the president's position on marriage is "at the heart" of the problem.

The Rev. Dwight McKissic, a prominent Southern Baptist and black preacher, describes himself as a political independent who didn’t support Obama in 2008 because of his position on social issues. McKissic said
Obama’s support for same-gender marriage “betrayed the Bible and the black church.” Around the same time, McKissic was researching Mormonism for a sermon and decided to propose a resolution to the annual Southern Baptist Convention that would have condemned Mormon “racist teachings.”

Important: Do You Support Pres. Obama’s Re-Election? Vote Here Now!
They’ll still show up for their share of the walking around money.
We were also told we could count on “the PUMAs” voting against Obama in 2008. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Pastor McKissic is probably one of the very few.
If blacks stay home on election day, the pollsters' D+9 predictions will be FAR off the mark. Hence, Romney wins. Good. Stay home, Obama lovers!
Vote Obamma- Lose Your Immortal Soul
Maybe the pastor should view 4 years of Romney as the equivalent of the Babylonian captivity when the Lord told the Jewish remnant, you messed up, sit still, and wait. The guy in charge then didn’t know the Lord either, but he was still doing His will.
Yep. PUMAs and the “Bradley Effect”—two useless lies from 2008. Not banking on it this time!
>>Around the same time, McKissic was researching Mormonism for a sermon and decided to propose a resolution to the annual Southern Baptist Convention that would have condemned Mormon racist teachings.
Are these new “racist teachings” or are they the ones that Mormons gave up about 30 or 40 years ago? This notion of equivalency for blacks in so annoying. Why do they believe that a black man doing something bad today is equal to something a white man did generations ago? The past is something you learn from, not something you “condemn” today to provide cover for evil in the present.
It doesn’t matter if they stay home — one way or another those inner-city ghetto precincts will vote 110% for Bonzo just like they did in 2008. Actual voter turnout means nothing when the fraud machine is up and running.
Why would anyone possibly think "the Muslim" would be Christian?
The only way they could disavow them is to toss the book of Mormon and hence their whole religion. Their scripture claims God punished people with dark skin as a curse. There are plenty of tough things to explain in the Bible, but the Mormons have even heavier lifting.
I’m thinking there’s some truth to this...
as I have stated a lot today on FR, my neighbors are predominantly black in a “minority majority” district here in VA.
In 2008, tons of signs and Obambot support...
this year, not ONE sign anywhere...
The pastors say their congregants are asking how a true Christian could back same-sex marriage,...
I want to know how these pastors ask ‘true Christians’ to support abortion and the genocide of their own race!
It is unlikely Obamugabe will get 95% of the black vote this time. If he just gets 93-94% of a depressed black turnout, he is unlikely to win. This pastor needs to be publicized. Some who hear it will stay home or may even vote for Romney.
I think it’s across the board about the election in general.
I’m not seeing yard signs anyplace, whether Romney or Obama.
I’m convinced that if state ballots required “none of the above” to be included that both of these guys would be flushed.
The recommendation to stay home needs to be publicized.
This could also be a subtle method the democrats are using to make Romney’s mormonism an issue.
This way they get to talk about black pastors concerned with a racist heritage in mormonism, and they don’t have to be accountable for the party running ads about it.
In fact it’s “drop-outs” who get the blame.
“`stay home’ election day”
So it will be like any other day for them.
Black pastors are not the only ones suggesting this. I know of a couple of pastors, not from black churches, who are facing the same problem: Vote for someone who supports gay marriage and wants you to pay for abortions, or vote for the guy whose religion teaches him that he can become a god, and has a track record for also supporting abortion.
Not really much of a choice in that regard.
IF she doesn't figure out a way to run this year (and believe me, she's trying), Hillary wants Obama to lose so she can run against Romney in 2016. So, she needs Romney to win. So, every Rat from Pelosi to black pastors to PUMAs are staying away from the election this year.
That's Hillary's army. It's real. They're the REAL Uruk-hai. The regular liberals and RINOs are the Orcs.
Maybe so but I sometimes think it’s an indication of a two fold phenomenon.
The black folks aren’t big fans of gays and gay marriage.
And the white Pubs are keeping a low profile in case there is any back lash if Obozo loses...this is mentioned a lot on Free Republic.
I could be reading too much into things but....
The pastors will say “stay home,” but the ACORN-by-another-name organization will be at the curb with their buses on November 6, handing out cig cartons and no telling what else.
BS. They`ll be out in force, voting for Bruthah #1 Homo “marriage” or not, they`re not going to let the gravy train jump the rail..
...by the case - after a day's worth of precinct-to-precinct voting, of course...
