Director of Anti-Muslim Film that Sparked Attacks on U.S. Facilities is an Arab

He's not a Jew.

At least, that's the latest on the man behind the anti-Islam film, "Innocence of Muslims," that has fueled attacks on U.S. diplomatic installations in Libya, Egypt and Yemen, leaving the U.S. ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, dead.

The filmmaker appears to be an Egyptian Christian rather than an Israeli Jew, as he had claimed in interviews.

The Associated Press tracked down an Egyptian Coptic Christian living in Southern California who admitted to involvement with the film's logistics, and whose middle name and a known alias closely resemble the apparently fake name - Sam Bacile - used by the filmmaker.

A 14-minute trailer for the crudely produced film ridiculing the Muslim Prophet Mohammed and posted to YouTube with an Arabic translation has been cited as the reason for the outbreak of violence at U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East.

On Tuesday night, heavily armed Islamists stormed the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, killing Stevens and and three members of his staff. Fighters claimed that their actions were driven by anger at the film, though U.S. officials believe the assault may have been pre-planned.

The deadly attack followed angry protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, where rioters breached the compound's walls and destroyed its American flag.

On Thursday, protesters stormed the grounds of the U.S. Embassy in Yemen's capital city of Sanaa. There were also more anti-American demonstrations in Cairo and other capitals of Muslim countries.

In the wake of the initial violence, several media outlets interviewed a California man who gave his name as Sam Bacile who reportedly had produced, directed and written "Innocence of Muslims." The man said that he was an Israeli-American real estate developer hoping to help Israel with the film, which he said was financed with $5 million by 100 Jewish donors.

While his claims were initially widely repeated, including by JTA, they quickly came under scrutiny. There appears to have been no such person by that name involved in film or real estate, now was that name known in California's Jewish and Israeli communities. A high-ranking Israeli official in Los Angeles told JTA on Wednesday that extensive inquiries among Hollywood insiders and members of the local Israeli community failed to turn up a single person who knew a Sam Bacile.

A self-described Christian activist from Southern California who was a consultant to the film told The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg that Bacile was a pseudonym and was not Israeli, and likely not Jewish. The consultant, Steve Klein, who has a history of anti-Islam activism, said that those behind the film were largely Evangelical Christians and included some Copts.

Goldberg quoted Klein as saying, "I don't know that much about him. I met him, I spoke to him for an hour. He's not Israeli, no. I can tell you this for sure, the State of Israel is not involved."

Klein also said, "His name is a pseudonym. All these Middle Eastern folks I work with have pseudonyms. I doubt he's Jewish. I would suspect this is a disinformation campaign."

Meanwhile, a high-ranking Israeli official in Los Angeles told JTA on Wednesday that after numerous inquiries, it appeared that no one in the Hollywood film industry or in the local Israeli community knew of a Sam Bacile.

The Los Angeles Jewish Journal also reported that individuals heavily involved in the Los Angeles real estate community had never heard of anyone named Bacile. There is no California real estate license issued in his name either, according to the Huffington Post.

A member of the film's cast, who said she and others involved with the film were misled about its true message, said that the film's director was Egyptian.

The Associated Press located an Egyptian man by the name of Nakoula Basseley Nakoula who said that he had handled logistics for the company that produced the film.

While Nakoula denied being Sam Bacile, the AP traced the cell phone it had used to contact the filmmaker to Nakoula's address. The wire service said that when Nakoula showed a reporter his driver's license, he had kept his thumb over his middle name, which resembles the filmmaker's alias.

In 2010, Nakoula had pleaded no-contest to federal bank fraud charges and had been ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution, the AP reported. The report cited federal court papers saying that Nakoula had used the name Nicola Bacily, among other aliases.

Nakoula said that he supported the concerns of his fellow Coptic Christians regarding their treatment by Egypt's Muslim majority.

Christopher Stevens was viciously attacked and murdered Tuesday night A host of Jewish organizations have issued statements condemning the attacks on U.S. installations.

The Atlantic's Goldberg noted that the erroneous reports about the filmmaker's alleged Jewish background have spread across the Middle East and as a consequence endanger Jews. As of Thursday, Iran's Press TV was still reporting that the film was produced by an Israeli American and financed by Jews.

The Los Angeles chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations and the Islamic Shura Council were scheduled to hold a news conference Wednesday to condemn the killings and the embassy attack.

In Washington, CAIR's national officials called on Muslims in the Middle East "to ignore the trashy anti-Islam film that resulted in the attacks."

It’s funny the Associated Press can find this man so fast and yet they cannot find out how Obama got his Social Security card, his draft card, nor any of his college records.

This is really old news but beware of the initial story by AP. The blogger has worked it into his line and there's no other source for the deal about Jews than the antisemitic propagandists at AP.

Note that technically speaking the Coptic Christians in Egypt are native Egyptians. The Moslem Arabs in Egypt are Arabs ~ immigrants from elsewhere.

What's next? We know he gave Obama $1 million for his campaign.

So, was Obama behind this film and attack like many, many people suspect.

People have noticed that whenever Obama is having problems something happens to get everyone thinking of something else.

Is this evolving into another Mohammed Durah case, where Muslims fabricated something to implicate their enemies, which in that case was faking an atrocity of murdering a 12 year old boy to blame on Israelis?

There is now way I can believe an Evangelical made a film and tried to blame it on the Israelis.Sam Bacile is NOT an Evangelical
Nope sorry but Evangelicals are about the only people group who steadfastly stand up for Israel even when they take lots of heat for doing so. Nope there is no way an Evangelical made this film and tried to pin it on the Israelis .

There are people behind this alright and it's probably the ones who are busy using this stirring up the mobs (which BTW these mobs hate Evangelicals more than anyone else because of their stand for Israel).

People need to start looking at Hamas operatives posing as Christians .
This whole blame it on an Israeli is nothing more than to try to turn more people against Israel.

Nakoula is not the Director.

A guy known for porn films was the director.

And there are actors known for porn films that are acting in the film.

The movie is irrelevant.

Making this about a “movie” is an over simplification by those idiots out there that believe in this “religion of peace” nonsense.

It's simply the agent that caused this all to precipitate, but in the end it's because the Islamic world is exclusive, violent, oppressive, racist, sexist and while it has brought humanity little in the last few hundred years, they have a sense of superiority through their belief system that tells them all others are scum.

What is the common ingredient among them? India's (Hindu) terrorist problem, the problem faced by Israel (Jews), in Russia (Atheist), Britain/Netherlands/France/Spain/Germany/USA (Christian), even the Buddhist's are attacked, their shrines blown up... There is one constant, can anyone tell me what that is? But no worries, in America granny takes her shoes off and gets X-rayed at an airport, because we have a plan and another federal agency to protect us! lol

Get your mind off the Jewish angle for a moment ~ the rioting this year was happening on Egyptian Coptic Christian New Years. It happened at the same time last year as well.

That's what Arab Moslems do in Egypt ~ they riot and then go burn down Coptic Christian churches and murder Christians.

AP is the SOLE source for a Jewish angle in this story. They are an Islamofascist propaganda operation ~ with no credibility of any kind.

Given the way the Moslems treat the Coptic Christians in Egypt I think the Copts are free to say anything they wish about the Moslems.

It's getting easier and cheaper to make videos about all sorts of things. Be interesting to see one where the Mahdi is on Earth, and he and Jesus are walking around killing Islamic mobs with super death rays.

BTW, for the Twelvers you first have to explain how it is you rescue the 12th imam from a well, but I'm sure they think of that from time to time.
