~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Camp Pendleton, California
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and serves as its prime amphibious training base. It is located in Southern California between the cities of Oceanside and San Clemente. The base was established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared as a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division. This is the main road for traffic into the base. This gate has been open and manned by Marines 24 hours a day since 1942.

The base's diverse geography, spanning over 125,000 acres, plays host to year round training for Marines in addition to all other branches of the U.S. military. Amphibious and sea-to-shore training takes place at several key points along the base's 17 miles of coastline. The main base is in the Mainside Complex, at the southeastern end of the base, and the remote northern interior is an impact area.
Daytime population is around 100,000. Recruits from nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego spend a month on Pendleton's Edson Range receiving field training, and after graduating from boot camp return to the base's School of Infantry for further training. Camp Pendleton remains the last major undeveloped portion of the Southern California coastline, save for a few small state parks.
The base is the home of I Marine Expeditionary Force, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Logistics Group and many tenant units, including elements of Marine Aircraft Group 39 and Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity (MCTSSA). Read More About Camp Pendleton Here!
In San Diego, California, you can visit the USS Midway Museum.
USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) was an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II. Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, as of 2004 she is a museum ship in San Diego, California. She is the only remaining aircraft carrier of the World War II era that is not an Essex-class ship.
Midway was laid down 27 October 1943 by Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, Virginia. Her revolutionary hull design was based on what would have been the Montana class battleships and gave her superior maneuverability over all previous carriers. Visit The USS Midway Museum Here!
FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT~Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allies military and the family members of the above. Honoring those who have served before.
Please remember: The Canteen is a place to honor and entertain our troops. The Canteen is family friendly. Let's have fun! We pray for your continued strength, to be strong in the face of adversity. We pray for your safety, that you will return to your families and friends soon. We pray that your hope, courage, and dignity remain unbroken, so that you may show others the way. God Bless You All ~ Today, Tomorrow and Always |

The Lure Of A Message
September 18, 2012
Youre sitting in a darkened theater enjoying a concert, a play, or a film, when suddenly a smartphone screen lights up as a person reads an incoming text and perhaps takes time to reply. In his book The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, Nicholas Carr says that in our connected world, The sense that there might be a message out there for us is increasingly difficult to resist.
Samuel was a young boy when he heard a voice call his name and thought it was Eli the priest in the tabernacle where he served the Lord (1 Sam. 3:1-7). When Eli realized that God was calling Samuel, he told the boy how to respond. When God called his name a fourth time, Samuel answered, Speak, for Your servant hears (v.10). This attentiveness to Gods voice became the pattern of Samuels life as the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord (v.21).
Are we listening for Gods voice in our lives today? Are we more drawn by the vibration of a smartphone than the still, small voice of the Lord through His Word and His Spirit?
May we, like Samuel, learn to discern Gods voice and say, Speak, Lord. Im listening.
May we listen, Lord, to You
As You speak to us today
Through Your Spirit and Your Word
Help us follow and obey. Sper
Dont let the noise of the world keep you from hearing the voice of the Lord.
Read: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

If you go to page 10 of our
September 13, 1942 WWII + 70 years thread you can see an article and photo from the early days of Camp Pendleton. I guess that means that the base just turned 70 years old.
We are also running Guadalcanal Diary day-by-day. You will find that on one of the replies.

BAND OF BROTHERS WORLD WAR II
Members of the 101st Airborne, June 7, 1944 at Ste.Marie du Mont, France
"This day is call'd the feast of Crispian. He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say, "To-morrow is Saint Crispian." Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."
KOREA
Members of the "Chosin Few", 1st Marine Division, December 1950
"Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember with advantages What feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words, Harry the King, Bedford, and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester, Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered."
VIETNAM
FMF Corpsman D. R. Howe treats the wounds of Pfc. D. A. Crum, "H" Company, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment, during Operation Hue City.
"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition: And gentlemen in England now a-bed Shall think themselves accursed they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."
AFGHANISTAN
Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division in action, Afghanistan, 2011
"Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more, Or close the wall up with our English dead. In peace there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility; But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Let it pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it As fearfully as does a galled rock O'erhang and jutty his confounded base, Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean."
(Henry V, Act IV, Scene iii)
THE STRUGGLE AGAINST TYRANNY GOES ON, AS IT HAS FROM TIMES IMMEMORIAL. THE BAND OF BROTHERS STILL STANDS FAST IN THE BREACH!
They have our six!
Honor them for their Service and Sacrifice!

Love Camp Pendleton! Lived there for 3 years. When I was out in San Diego in May, I drove by several times and there is a lot of new construction going on just inside the front gate on Vandegrift. I’m wondering if the big building is a new naval hospital. Does anyone know?
