MLB investigating homophobic slur

TORONTO (AP) -- Major League Baseball is checking reports that Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar played Saturday's game against Boston wearing eye-black displaying a homophobic slur written in Spanish.

Pictures posted online show Escobar with the message written in his eye-black, a sticker players wear under their eyes to reduce glare from the sun. The slur did not appear to be directed at any person in particular.

Really. Lots of guys his age use “You’re gay” to tell others that their effort is less than 100% or weak. I had to caution my ESL students not to say “That’s gay” for “That’s illogical” or “That’s silly” .

Not to sound scholarly, but from the Greek, “homos” means the same, and “phobos” means fear.

“Homophobic” in current use is Frankenslang. Properly parsed, “homophobia” would mean “irrational fear of those having the same qualities as oneself.”

Me, I’m not afraid of other conservative heterosexual G-d fearing gun owning FReepers.
