More than 130 inmates escaped through a tunnel from a Mexican prison on the border with the United States in one of the worst jailbreaks the country's beleaguered penal system has suffered in recent years.

Homero Ramos, attorney general of the northern state of Coahuila, said 132 inmates of the prison in the city of Piedras Negras had got out through the tunnel in an old carpentry workshop, then cut the wire surrounding the complex.

Corrupt prison officials may have helped the inmates escape

At the end of 2010, more than 140 inmates escaped a prison in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. This February, at least 44 people died in a fight between rival gangs at an overcrowded prison in northern Mexico.

Mexican prisons are notoriously overcrowded and corrupt. The more powerful inmates nevertheless enjoy relatively posh “luxury cells” while others live in abject poverty.

In one prison near Acapulco, a surprise inspection revealed 100 plasma televisions, two sacks of pot, 100 cockerels for cock fighting and 19 prostitutes. There were also apparently two peacocks running around.

Based on precedent, the inmates can just leave any time they want if they can bribe the guards well enough.

This is the money line:
“ U.S. authorities had been alerted to help capture the fugitives if they try to cross the border.”

Like those authorities would arrest anyone coming from the south...

The Piedras Negras lockup is for maximum security inmates, some real monsters. Though they’ve put up some border fence at Eagle Pass, they did a poor job of it. On the plus side, if they do cross the border, there are only four roads out of Eagle Pass, which limits their options.

1) Head into central Mexico to get to a friendly cartel’s area.
2) Cross into the US, with the idea of reentering Mexico from a different area outside of the Mexican net.
3) Cross into the US, with the idea of continuing to run a long way away.
4) Cross into the US, with the idea of finding a gang safe house in San Antonio.

In any event, if Mexico is willing to offer $15,000 a head for these guys, they are probably worth $100,000 a head from the American point of view. Bad news.

Many of Mexico's prisons are overcrowded and struggle to counter the influence of criminal gangs that can use their financial muscle to corrupt those in charge.

Thanks, War On Drugs, for channeling hyperinflated profits into the hands of violent cartels so they can escape prison.
