Great stuff. It’s funny that abortion and gay marriage have become the most important issue for some American Jews.
The irony is unreal. They support the long-road form of eugenics. It reminds me of Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man".
No, it's not funny, it's indicative of ignorance of Jewish tradition. There is no argument from Jewish law or philosophy that supports unrestricted elective abortion. Abortion is legal under Jewish law only when the mother's life is at risk if the pregnancy isn't terminated.
Despite the fairly high percentage of today's American Jewish women who somehow support unrestricted elective abortion (i.e., a woman's right to choose), it is extremely rare to encounter a Jewish woman known to have actually had such a procedure. Hypocrisy?
As for "gay marriage": there is no support at all for it to be drawn from Jewish law, philosophy, or history. From this Jewish perspective, it is totally illogical to mess around with the basic definition of marriage - one man and one woman - after thousands of years of precedent.
BTW, since abortion and gay marriage are essentially state issues, it's hard to see how the presidential election will effect either one, one way or the other.
