(Florida) Family Faces ($250 per day) Fines for Hosting Bible Study
Fox News ^ | September 17, 2012 | Todd Starnes

A Florida family is facing fines for hosting a weekly Bible study in their home – an act that city officials argue violates zoning codes.

Shane and Marlen Roessiger, of Venice, Fla. are facing a $250 per day fine for hosting Friday night prayer and Bible study gatherings that are attended by as many as 10 people.

“It is difficult to understand how it is illegal to have a prayer meeting on Friday night with a half dozen people but it is alright if I invited the same group on Monday evening to watch Monday night Football,” Roessiger said.

The Roessigers are also facing a fine for putting a small sign in their front yard that reads: “Need Prayer (941) 484-4915.”

“It’s a weekly Bible study,” said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute. “It’s the same kind of Bible study that occurs in households across America.”

Pam Johnson, a spokesperson for the city of Venice, sent a statement to Fox News defending their actions and noting that the cases against the Roessigers have been continued.

“The Code Enforcement Board has continued both cases, although Mr. Roessiger was found guilty a few months ago of zoning violation (as it relates to land use),” Johnson said. “It has not been determined at this time if the use violation has been abated. No determination of guilt has been made for the sign issue because the case is continued.”

Johnson confirmed that the two cases involve a code infraction regarding the use of a sign and a zoning infraction regarding using their home as a ‘house of worship.’

It sounds like this zoning violation stems from a sign they posted on the property. They could have had the meetings without problem other-wise.

They would arrest everyone holding an Open House to sell their home then.
The reason is trumped up. But they should hold it in a Panera Bread store and make everyone else listen to their lesson like we do. I bet they let them go back to the house.

Does the city ban other types of yard signs? Campaign signs, perhaps? I've seen those types of signs all over and can't imagine that anyone would be persecuted for putting one in their yard. In the USSR perhaps. Communist China, perhaps. But in the United States of America? I truly believe we're entering the end times. If not the biblical and times then the end times for this country.

Indeed, words fail me. Had to come up with a new tagline for this.

That’s unbelievable! He’s probably a Father to boot. What an awful person to have as a Father.

Zoning commissions are a new front of totalitarianism. They are over-regulating both businesses and private activity to death!

Silly people thought there was such a thing as private property in this country.

Of course putting words on a placard on land they bought with their own sweat, is a crime. When you see the word “prayer” posted in public, it’s a responsible citizen’s duty to call 911.

And now it’s a crime to gather together in a private home to worship. Well, that’s what all those billions spent on drones is for...when you see a group of people walking into a house with Bibles in hand, it’s a sure sign of a criminal organization that has to be neutralized before it becomes a major threat to society... /s

RE :”,i>Does the city ban other types of yard signs?”

Probably any other public meeting signs in front of home residences.
What they do this for is they don't want a church opening in a public residence, or perhaps a school. They could remove the sign and meet in the-same place less formally. like the boy Scouts do.

If someone else is allowed to do this there with something other than a Christian church ,Lets say a mosque , then you have case in fact they could sue. . But I doubt they do.

“It is difficult to understand how it is illegal to have a prayer meeting on Friday night with a half dozen people but it is alright if I invited the same group on Monday evening to watch Monday night Football,” . . .

The answer is really quite simple. The ruling class doesn't feel threatened by football. But they do feel threatened by the Bible.

Scripture tells us that when Christ returns there will still be those that won't repent, and that's always confused me....until I saw that pic. His sign doesn't even make sense--if Jesus returns in his lifetime it would be a fulfillment of biblical scripture, yet he's saying that his heart is so full of hatred that he still wouldn't accept the truth. Prediction: this guy ends up becoming a Christian. I know plenty of people that started out railing against God that ended up becoming Christians cuz (a) when you have your mind set on God, good or bad, he'll talk back, and (b) God is more powerful than the greatest of putzes.

A Koran study would probably be allowed. A get-together of a dozen people should be not crime, no matter the book being studied.
I’ll admit that a sign marking a Bible Study is probably tacky, but no more so than a yard sale sign.

I’m not an overly irreligious person but I find that sign and the thought behind it, hideous.

Are you serious? Putting up a sign offering loving prayer, support & compassion to others is hideous?

You are cold.

How else are Shane and Marlene supposed to finance their trips to Nicaragua?

Preaching, healing, “laying on of hands” right next to your house on a regular basis. Who wouldn’t be up for that?
