Obama's jobs record: Better than Bush's
CNN Money ^ | 9/18/12 | Chris Isidork

Posted on 09/18/2012 6:22:35 AM PDT by listenhillary

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Mitt Romney is accusing President Obama of overseeing the worst jobs recovery since the Great Depression.

And months of disappointing jobs growth means the president could face Election Day with fewer workers than on the day he took office.

But Romney's accusation is wrong -- President Obama's job gap isn't the worst. In fact, it isn't nearly as big as the one President George Bush faced eight years ago.

Here are the numbers:

There are 261,000 fewer employees on payrolls today than when Obama took office. But at the same point of the Bush administration, the jobs deficit stood at 856,000 jobs, according to current estimates of the same period.

By comparison, the unemployment rate today is only slightly higher than the 7.8% rate on the day Obama was sworn in, and slightly better than the 8.3% reading a few weeks later.

I love they way they (MSM) just pooh-poohs the unemployment rate under Barack Hussein Obama. They were screaming when unemployment under Bush was 5.4%

This is B.S. Unemployment was consistently at 5.5% throughout most of the Bush administration. It didn’t spike until the rats took over congress. And when Bush left office it was 7% not 8+. Still running against Bush. Pathetic!

IMO, total B. S.

The Obama folks are lying their asses off. And CNN is a charter member of the DNCp.

I will say though, the average Obama supporter has an I.Q. that is less than that of a field of grass, so this will loom large on their political radar.

Employment figures under Bush were nowhere near as bad as they have been under the Obama administration. The DNCp can play with the numbers, and come up with some audacious claims, but that’s all they are.

Obama is a massive failure at home. He’s a massive failure when it comes to foreign relations.

What does this guy have to run on? It’s all a vapor trail. No wonder they’re lying.

Around 2004 unemployment was so low in our area that our company had to hire a marginally qualified employee with no job experience to fill a responsible job slot because the only two other people who responded to our help want ads after 2 months of advertising were an alcoholic who came to the job interview drunk and convicted child molester who had just been released on parole.

Now unemployment is so high we hardly even have a rush hour commute where before it traffic jams for two hours before and after quitting time

New Study: Startup Job Creation Collapses
Press Release

September 13, 2012
by Hudson Institute

WASHINGTON—Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce indicates a continued and accelerating collapse of startup job creation in recent years. A new economic policy briefing paper from Hudson Institute, The Collapse of Startups in Job Creation, takes a close look at this troubling trend and concludes that entrepreneurship in the United States is in a parlous state.

Hudson Chief Economist Tim Kane, author of the new study, reports that job creation at newly formed firms—those less than one year old—has now skidded to an all-time low. In the aggregate, since 1977, new firms have combined to create a net average of 3 million jobs per year. But in the most recent available annual data—for 2010—that figure was an alarming 22 percent off the mean, at just 2.34 million. And the drop-off becomes even starker when the figures are adjusted for population, which continues to rise. During the George H.W. Bush and Clinton years, roughly 11.3 Americans per thousand worked in startup jobs. But the number then fell to 10.8 per thousand during the George W. Bush administration. And it has since fallen still further, and precipitously, to 7.8 per thousand during the Obama administration

Note that DROP to 7.8 from 10.8 start ups. We saw you coming Obama of Roanoke.

"I remember there was such a shortage of workers, they were hiring seniors back from retirement."

If they haven't already, they're likely to hire seniors back from retirement for part time work again, thanks to the full-time employee cost of Obamacare. There is still a shortage of skilled, experienced workers available at a reasonable cost.

The job outlook for 20-somethings living in mom's basement is less positive.

Exactly, I wish we had a quick list of the average unemployment per year from 2001-2008 to quickly deflect this absurd position. Our side just sits and takes it, time after time, and refuse to defend our record.

The smartest thing Romney could do is to start doing what Newt did in the primaries and in each appearance state what the economic growth was at 3 yrs, 10 months into Reagan’s term and compare it to Obama’s measly numbers. That was extremely effective from Newt last year, and would be even more so a year later as Obama’s numbers are worse.

His supporters are not all lay-abouts. They have kids staying in their basements I would bet. They have family members asking to borrow money because they have lost their jobs. They wince when they have to fill up the gas tanks of their cars. They put things back on the shelf at the store because they don’t have enough money for that.

I didn’t say his supporters were smart, but I know there are some who fit this scenario very well.

Absolutely right.

In those days, when I went to the grocery store, there was a white haired greeter at the door.

Now when I go to the grocery store, there are elderly people hanging around the entrance offering to take people who planned to take their groceries on the bus, a ride home for 2 or 3 dollars.

I regularly see spot jobs and casual labor being offered on Craigslist where the pay offered for the work on completion, amounts to significantly less than the legal minimum wage when you gauge the time required to complete. Often I see replies posted to these ads, that say something to the effect of “Re: Are you out of your mind?”... and yet, by the end of the day, those jobs are all gone, snapped up.

I thank God that I have a small biz that lets me eke by, but if I see a moving job on craigslist, I grab it... I have a gift for lifting heavy objects that often gets me tips at the end of the day... I look at it as getting paid to go to the gym ;^)

They had already been sucked up out of the job market and hired by the time we needed to fill our job slot.

Now, official unemployment is around 11% and unofficial unemployment number is way higher.

These high unemployment numbers don't really tell the whole story though because they don't count the out flux of the huge number of people who have simply picked up stakes and moved out of state because they can't find work.

Anybody remember the term that the Dems coined “underemployment”? The unemployment figures in my state were so low that we officially had a labor shortage and could not find qualified people to fill positions. The Dems said “Sure unemployment is low, but these people don’t have good jobs.” Well, I’m sure some of them would like just about ANY job right about now!

Chris Isidore. U of Chicago. ‘78-’92, according to LinkedIn.

The U of Chicago continues to sink into academic irrelevance.

Bush’s jobs were real, and were a net benefit to the country.

BHO’s jobs are government jobs that don’t benefit the country. In fact, he hampers beneficial gov’t jobs in favor of gov’t jobs that hamper economic growth.

Nice chart!

But, I don’t think that it tells the whole story.

I don’t believe that since 1949 that if you stopped looking for employment, you came off the unemployment rolls, as is done today.

I also don’t think that there were 8 million unemployed on permanent disability, and therefore not counted as unemployed, as there is today.

This is some pretty serous spin all around, especially this:

By comparison, the unemployment rate today is only slightly higher than the 7.8% rate on the day Obama was sworn in, and slightly better than the 8.3% reading a few weeks later.

Completely leaving out the dramatic drop in the labor force participation rate - with those people included the unemployment rate has steadily climbed under Obama's tenure from 7.8% to 11.2%. That is not a good record.

The author of this piece actually wants us to believe that more and more people getting so discouraged they have simply given up looking for work bringing down the unemployment rate is a sign of economic recovery. The labor force participation rate is at a 30 year low - devastating.

So what's the REAL unemployment rate? 8.3%, 12%, 23%. Who knows? I suspect that the BLS itself doesn't really know. But that participation rate chart speaks volumes. Romney needs to pound nobama on that every time he (Romney) opens his mouth.

When did the rate fall off the cliff? When was nobama anointed? There ya go.

Here's the chart with better gradations:

From Business Insider.

The charts in replies 32 and 47 completely denigrate this article’s false headline. Those charts are devastating for nobama and need to be widely disseminated. nobama has NO defense for the truth spoken by those charts.

That fall off the cliff starting in 2009 is truly breathtaking.

“The data that was reported eight years ago was somewhat different, compared with current figures looking at that period, since revisions have taken place in the months and years that followed. But on Election Day 2004, the readings at the time showed the economy with 585,000 fewer jobs than when Bush took office.”
