Two female police officers shot dead in Manchester as man arrested [UK: gun and grenade]
Telegraph ^ | Sept 18,2012 | Martin Evans

Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, were responding to a routine report of a house burglary in the Mottram district of Greater Manchester when they were killed.

Shortly after the incident Dale Cregan, 29, who was being sought in connection with a gun and grenade attack in the city, walked into a police station and was arrested on suspcion of their murder.

It is understood that a number of shots were fired during the incident and a grenade was also detonated.

Sir Peter Fahy, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police paid tribute to the two officers and said it was one of the the "darkest days" in the history of the police service.

At a news conference he also revealed that it was believed Cregan, or someone acting on his behalf had deliberately made a call to the police reporting a burglary in a bid to lure officers to their deaths.

He told a news conference: "We believe either he has made the call or he has got someone else to make the call for the purpose of drawing these two officers to the scene. It would appear that he has deliberately done this in an act of cold blooded murder."

Squad Leader: Simon Phoenix! Lie down with your hands behind your back.

Simon Phoenix: What’s this? Six of you. Such nice, tidy uniforms. Oh I’m so scared!

[the Police Officers look at each other]

Simon Phoenix: What you guys don’t have sarcasm anymore?

[Police Officer talks to his automated assistant]

Squad Leader: Maniac has responded with a scornful remark.

automated assistant: Approach, and repeat ultimatum in an even firmer tone of voice. Add the words, “or else”.

They were not. Patrol constables do not generally carry sidearms.

I hope that 50 years down the road my great grand kids consider that a “cult” movie, worthy of watching a hundred times...After coming home from a dinner at Taco Bell.

No, but it sounds like it was an ambush so it probably didn't make a difference. You had four cops shot in a Louisiana ambush recently; two of them dead, all of them armed.

I read somewhere that Demolition Man is one of the new top 10 modern movies for conservatives. I remember the Top 10 included Cocktail from Tom Cruise and 13 Assassins.

The officers were armed with tickets to give to the criminals in case they were threatened but R.I.P., still.

Traditionally, many English police officers (Bobbies), are not armed with firearms.

This was politically in deference to the will and consent of the English subjects when the Bobbies were created as a civilian police force, and has not been changed since then by tradition.

Several additional overlapping departments have been created over the years and they are armed.

No. Regular street patrol are not armed. There’s a special squad that’s allowed to use guns. They have to be specifically called out. They go to the station and receive weapons from a locked room. Then they go out and do whatever ....
