In Washington D.C., the transgendered population is making itself heard.
Their message: Were doing fine -- why not get to know us?
In response to incidents of violence and cultural misunderstandings that transgendered Americans face on a daily basis, the nations capital rolled out their #TransRespect campaign, in print ads and on Twitter and Facebook.
The fiveads, which will appear all over D.C. in the fall, feature actual city residents, photographed with enthusiastic smiles along with a descriiption of themselves.
I like staying in shape, listening to Adele, and shopping in Friendship Heights with my mom and sisters, one ad reads. Im a transgender woman and Im part of D.C.
Please treat me the way any woman would want to be treated: with courtesy and respect, the ads read.
In short: Were just like you -- treat us with dignity.
Its the first government-sponsored campaign in the country to focus on the treatment of transgender and gender non-conforming communities, Gustavo Velasquez, Director of the DC Office of Human Rights, told the News in an email.
D.C. is fortunate to have one of the most progressive non-discrimination laws in the nation, and it prohibits discrimination against people because of their gender identity or expression, he said.
He hopes that other cities, like New York, will take a similar initiative.
So far, the campaign has been received an overwhelmingly positive reception. D.C. Mayor Vincent Grey has reportedly been in talks with several partners in other cities who are eager to spread the message across the nation.
Discrimination against transgendered people happens every day -- they are often the victims of violence, verbal abuse and misunderstanding in the workplace, hospitals and on the streets.
The level of employment discrimination against transgender and gender non-conforming people is extraordinarily high nationwide, according to a 2011 study by the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, said Velasquez. The impact that discrimination has on people's ability to find jobs is enormous.
For one of the campaign models, the choice to participate wasnt just a matter of pride -- it was a matter of life and death.
I chose to participate in this campaign and advocate on behalf of the transgender community in memory of LaShay McLean, my intern who was killed last year because she was a transgender woman, Iden Campbell McCollum, a mental health advocate and transgender man told GLAAD. Our community still faces high levels of discrimination and violence, but things are improving, and the governments willingness to launch a campaign for our community speaks to that improvement.
This whole “trans-whatever” thing is sad on so many levels.
Clearly these people have “issues”. But is the mental health community helping them, or “enabling” them? In the most extreme cases, they have surgery to change body parts. Is this really beneficial?
In today’s politically correct world, we’re not supposed to ask such questions.
It is no wonder lie-berals are so SCREWED up.
It seems they spend all their waking moments thinking about what goes on in their crotch-al area. More than likely, even in their dreams they are thinking with their crotch.
I have never known so many people with a fixation of their fun bits.
Well, how about posting a link ...
Oops. Sorry bout that. Here it is.
Is this going to start happening with race too?
Are we going to have white guys demanding others see them as Asian? Or black fellows that demand to be honored as Native American? I mean...we already have Elizabeth Warren.
How can this be? What prospective employer wouldn't want to hire a sales rep that showed up for work wearing a cheap wig, mini-skirt, and high-heels, hairy legs and all?
Yea, the normalization of mental illness, what could go wrong.
I remember in the past couple of years, some “trans-gendered” prostitutes were murdered in DC. Which could also be part of why DC is starting this campaign.
According to what I heard, the murders happened with the trans- prostitutes. The men they were with got enraged when they discovered that the “girls” were really “guys”.
So when they talk about “trans” violence in DC, I wonder if they are thinking of some of the prostitute murders.
As with the homosexual activists, tolerance will not be enough — people will be forced by law to agree and promote someone’s desire to be a different sex than they are biologically, and parents will not be allowed to encourage their children to accept their biological sex, which is what would be in the best interests of the child in the long run, IMHO, regardless of what anyone says.
What other psychosis will we be forced by law to participate in?
What other psychosis will we be forced by law to participate in?
Sooo...can’t wait to see the cat fight that breaks out when the TGs start replacing the “I have AIDS” posters that are ALL FREAKIN’ OVER the Metro with their, “I’m normal, too!” ads.
The downward spiral of American civilization continues.
Oh Lord, another victim class.
How am I supposed to understand them if THEY don’t even know who/what they are?
Clearly it's a mental disorder. They imagine they are a member of the opposite sex, so off comes the wedding tackle. By that logic, if they imagine they are Captain Hook, the surgeon should remove their right hand, and if they imagine they are Moshe Dayan, the surgeon should remove their left eye.
In Massachusetts, taxpayers are being forced by a federal judge to foot the bill for a prisoner who murdered his wife and now demands this expensive bodily mutilation procedure.
Does Obamacare also force taxpayers to pay for this?
O.K. So us NATURAL women have to dress for success, cover visible tats, not show too much boobage, not wear clothes that are too casual or too skimpy, wear closed-toe shoes and stockings, tone down the make-up, hairstyles and jewelry and not use too much perfume in order to be acceptable in the workplace. But they can dress their God-given male bodies like freaks and we are the ones who are discriminating? Give me a break.
LOL!
Good point.
