Skip to comments.ACLU at it Again! Say Good-bye to Father-Daughter School Dance

I'm so sick and tired of the ACLU. Every time someone wants to continue American traditions like prayer or the Pledge of Allegiance or patriotism, the ACLU comes around to threaten lawsuits and scare people into submission. That's exactly what's happening in Cranston, Rhode Island, but this time, it's the school's annual father-daughter dance that's being targeted.
As reported by WPRO 630 AM, "a signature school event, 'the father-daughter dance' has been banned in all public schools." How can this happen, you ask? Is there something wrong with a father-daughter dance? Yes, if you are the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The new superintendent of Cranston schools, Dr. Judith Lundsten, issued a letter in August banning all "gender specific events" at the school because of a complaint from the ACLU last May.
"This is 2012 and they [public schools] should not be in the business of fostering blatant gender stereotypes," Steven Brown of the RI ACLU told the WPRO Morning News with Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil.
Blatant gender stereotypes? What in the world does he mean? Is this guy nuts?
The Providence Journal adds that the mother-son ballgames are also banned.
In the midst of a firestorm sparked by the cancellation of father-daughter dances in Cranston schools, the School Committee says it will consider a resolution Monday asking lawmakers to modify a state state law prohibiting discrimination based on gender to allow the district to preserve the longtime tradition.
Many parents reacted emotionally and the national media picked up on the story when news spread Tuesday that the Cranston schools superintendent canceled father-daughter dances after receiving a complaint from the ACLU.
According to the news story, in order to comply with federal law, "the name of the dance would change and the girls could pick a parent for an event called, perhaps, the 'ladies choice' dance." Are you kidding me?
Here's a report from WPRI.com:
Parent-child events banned in Cranston
Wow... one person is upset, and so the entire dance is banned? What about the multitudes of people who are now upset about the dance being cancelled. Do their opinions and feelings matter at all?
Common sense is in such short supply in this country, and liberals and organizations like the ACLU just make it worse.
The ACLU is rather like an important arm of the CPUSA! This evil organization is the enemy of decent Americans and it works arm-in-arm with the evil Obama regime!
The ACLU is not just a group of miserable human beings, they are marxist-commie-homosexuals who have a very specific goal in mind and it has nothing to do with civil liberties. I have asked this question time and time again and have yet to receive a proper answer: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RULE OF THE MAJORITY? We are now being ruled by a very small minority of bleating miscreants. Who makes these decisions? The only solution to this problem in schools is to do away with public schools altogether. Let the homosexuals and marxists start their own schools and they can do whatever they please then.
Oh, Bulls*@t. You can take this state law a put it where the sun never shines. How about changing it to "Mother-son and Father-daughter" dance? What would the ACLU bitch about then? My guess is they'd find something...like it implies you have a father and a mother and you know who they are.
Oh please, this is not on the job gender discrimination which is what the law is for. This is about kids having fun with their parents! But that’s the rub, it fosters close knit familiea and we can’t have that in the ACLU’s brave new Marxist world.
I seriously doubt the court would find such activities a violation of anything other than common sense.
So the part where it's Dads only is sexist but the part where it's daughters only isn't?
I am for socialism, disarmament and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek the social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class and sole control by those who produce wealth. Communism is, of course, the goal.
The left (and their ideological founder in Gen 3) know what they are doing when they attack the concept of “father”.
Destroy the father, destroy the family.
Destroy the family, destroy the society.
Families, Decency Morals, Tradition 0
Nah. Too dull. How about "Old dude - young chick" dance.
I'm tired of old traditions being forced out.
I'm tired of so many new laws.
Are we going to prohibit fathers danceing with their daughters at her wedding reception also. Just wonderin
So when are they going to go after the National Organization for Women? Oh wait, that would be discrimination.
Only if the daughter is marrying another of the same sex!!!
Excellent observation! You hit the nail on the head!
Yeah, I know. How long before the spelling police comes after me?
“Ladies’ Choice” of a parent acknowledges that a good many girls do not have their Daddy in their lives. What a sad commentary on society. I’m surprised they use the term “ladies” - isn’t that one of those Chauvanist terms? /s

I am surprised that this ruling by the superintendent wasn’t easy as pie to work around. According to the vocabulary of the LGBT( the judicial Solomon and de facto Webster’s of the gender world) the words “father” & “daughter” HAVE NO GENDER so the mere labeling of the event as such is moot.
So far, the ACLU hasn’t succeeded to make our right of free association illegal. It’s well past time to form a privately funded entity with a name containing the world “free” to stage all the events the ACLU has tried to ban. The Free American’s Father/Daughter Dance would be a nice starter. The entity could also buy hilltops and put crosses on them... stuff like that. Maybe a regular gathering outside public meetings where a short prayer could be recited...
Will NAMBLA man-boy dancers be allowed??/s
The bastards are just jealous.
Next goal is to make the father-daughter dance at weddings illegal.
It’s something that promotes fatherhood ergo it must be crushed.
This is one of Orwell’s themes in `Nineteen Eighty Four.’ The state can’t compete with the family, so the family has to be eliminated (its influence over the child) or at least diminished so that it is no longer a threat to their authority.
The statists’ ultimate goal would be complete in loco parentis authority in school authorities, with children trained to report directly to them.
In the book, children belonged to an organization called the `Spies’ and as informants could have their parents arrested and/or killed.
I hope these parents thumb their noses at the ACLU by hiring a hall and carrying on with their dance. This has to be the most frivolous, outrageous attempt at social engineering they have ever filed.
While I in no way support events like this being banned, I can speak as a child whose father died early, that I often felt “less than” when I was excluded.
I want these types of events to continue — I don’t believe you make all miserable to accommodate those who can’t participate — but it would have been nice for those who planned these events when I was growing up to have figured out a way to include me and others. It is not the fault of the child that she is without a dad. Growing up that way is hard enough.
(Preparing to be flamed — some of you Freepers can be so ugly when challenged.)
Now, Americans are rendered truly sexless beings. Only the homosexuals are recognized as normal beings!
This lousy society is overwhelmed by the lousy central socialist govenment who hates Christianity, loves muslims, and is destroying our lives and economy.
What the hell are we going to do if we’re confronted by the Mack truck instead of the Moped?
