Iran deploys Russian-made submarine in Gulf

TEHRAN, Iran – Tehran has deployed one of its Russian-made submarines in the Persian Gulf, just days after the United States and more than two dozen allies began naval exercises nearby, Iranian state television reported Tuesday.

The Taregh-1 joined the Iranian fleet in the southern port of Bandar Abbas after it was overhauled earlier this year, according to the TV report. It's one of three Russian Kilo class submarines that Iran obtained in the early 1990s.

In May, Iran redeployed another Russian-made submarine after repairs.

The report also showed the launch of what was said to be the partially completed hull of a destroyer, the Sahand, which the TV said is expected to be ready in the near future.

Both launches came under the command of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters. He said Iran has no intention of invading other countries.

"The armed forces should be upgraded in a way that no one will be able to violate the reinforced fortress of Iran," Khamenei said during a visit Tuesday to a naval base in northern Iranian port of Noshahr.

I wonder if they know there is a 688i or Virginia class hunter killer following them a few thousand yards back. The noise of them opening just one outer tube door will have them meeting Davey Jones.

Does it have multiple MIRVed SLBMs like some of Israel's German-made submarines do? Hahahahahaha!

They don't. The Dolphin class subs carry the Popeye Turbo a SLCM, or sub-launched cruise missile. To my knowledge the only diesel powered ballistic missile subs were the Soviet Golf Class.

IIRC, mods have been made to the new buys. I’ll try and find a link. BTW, they’re thermonuclear but won’t admit it. Of course, they barely admit fission weapons, the old “ambiguity” play. Iran and Pakistan are in for a whooping if they ever try anything. Of course, if we had a real president (Reagan, Ike, JFK, Nixon, heck even LBJ) they’d never even be making the noises thay are, much less developing weapons.

I’m willing to bet a sonar crew on any U.S. boat or sub could take off the headphones, shut down the radar, and put their ear to the hull and hear the Iranians coming for several hours before they got in range to fire.

That’s a wild statement, but seriously, one of our ships going up against a 1980’s cold war holdover sub... It’s no contest.

Hold your breath and pray hard. People capable of crashing planes into buildings are capable of sinking a major U.S. warship via a suicide attack too.

Before WWI, all the major powers were making battleships, and just the sheer number of such ships created instability. The same problem is happening today because of submarines.

Every imbecile nation in the world is procuring submarines at a ridiculous rate, so I propose the USN create a special detachment to cull a lot of these boats.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_submarines

The idea is simply to cause an increase in unexplained submarine accidents around the world. They submerge and never surface again.

The common Russian built Kilo class submarine has a maximum depth of a little over 300 meters, and the Persian Gulf is just a third of that at its deepest.

The waters are overall very shallow, with a maximum depth of 90 metres and an average depth of 50 metres.

The Iranian subs are Kilos, which are incredibly quiet subs.

Of course they need to be maintained properly to keep that silence.

And there are other ways of tracking subs, particularly in shallow water, besides their noise signature.

It also wouldn't surprise me in the least if it turned out that one of our friendly neighborhood SEAL teams managed to attach a tracking beacon/device to the subs' hulls, either.
