MSNBC Tops Fox News On Back-To Back Nights In Primetime Demo
TV Newser ^ | 9/19/2012 | Alex Weprin

Posted on 09/19/2012 2:38:55 PM PDT by My Favorite Headache

Last night, for the second night in a row, MSNBC beat Fox News in primetime (8-11pm) in the key adults 25-54 demo. On Monday MSNBC averaged 471,000 demo viewers to Fox News Channel’s 469,000. On Tuesday, MSNBC drew 575,000 demo viewers, to FNC’s 526,000. We will have the full ratings numbers in The Scoreboard a little later on.

The number one show in the demo on cable news is always, always “The O’Reilly Factor” unless there is some sort of unusual news event or huge booking.

Last night, there was no big news event, but the number one show in the demo was MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.” This is despite the fact that O’Reilly had a big (and younger-skewing) guest in Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart. Maddow at 9pm drew 703,000 demo viewers to O’Reilly’s 682,000 at 8pm.

Last night in head to head match ups, MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” was fewer than 200,000 viewers behind the “Factor” in the demo, while Maddow and “The Last Word” had clean wins over “Hannity” and “On the Record,” respectively. In total viewers, O’Reilly doubled “Ed” in the ratings, while “Hannity” led Maddow by 206,000 viewers. At 10 PM, “On the Record” topped “The Last Word” by 100,000 total viewers.

FNC remains the top cable news channel in total viewers, but advertisers buy against adults 25-54 (that is why we have always led with the demo in The Scoreboard), so this shift has the potential to be a seismic one if MSNBC can maintain it.

Anyone have the long-term trendlines on this? It would be interesting to see if MSNBC was the result of them gaining viewers, FOX losing viewers or some combination of both (and to what extent).

I watched Beck his first night, and I haven’t been back to Fox since.

I do watch msnbc at times. Why only watch a channel you agree with all the time? I want to know what the enemy is up to.

I do think Beck has a good thing going with the Dish deal. Once he get’s another show or two, he’ll really impact Foxs’ numbers.

I watch FoxBusiness anymore - they aren't skewed (as) left as Fox & cover most of the news that matters from a business perpective.

Cavuto's GM rant on Monday was fantastic.

Why watch libs on Fox when you can get the real thing at MSNBC.

Exactly. FNC went NE Republican and left grass roots conservative.

I tell everyone I know to watch MSNBC as often as Fox so one can see the vicious nasty crap that comes from MSNBC.

I used to watch O’Reilly before he turned hardcore populist and caved in to Barack Obama. If he wanted to vet the President he could have and in the process, help save our country. I listen to Hannity in the afternoon so I really have no need to hear him again. The model of debating libtards has grown tiresome. These people are so demented and have so many mental problems, I just don’t care to see them anymore.

Could Beck’s Blaze TV be cutting into Fox News viewer numbers? I know I’ve been watching. Is it an uptick in MSDNC numbers or a drop in Fox numbers?

Agree - don’t think this is accurate HOWEVER since FOX has actually led some broadcasts (Shepard Smith) with the video being the reason for the attack - I have decided they have nothing new to offer.

Unless something big happens between now and the election I think I will listen to country music. Helps the blood pressure.

I quit watching Fox after they kid gloved the Marxist in Chief. Made me sick to see the truth hidden and allow the POS to waltz in like Baby Doc from Haiti. When the entire media is repeating the same lie, does it matter which channel you turn to?

Haven't watched FOX News since they kicked Glenn out (yes I do not believe the cover story) and replaced him with "The Five" = 4 liberals and a quasi conservative and added Whoraldo, the guy who got kicked out of NPR, the black communist who regularly appears on O'Realy and the other host of liberals infecting FOX "fair and unbalanced" News.

Stopped watching O'Realy years ago when he trashed the Swift Boat people and Free Republic.

If I want to find out what is actually going on in the world, I go to THE premiere website where nearly 100% of conservative talk show hosts including RUSH and Howie Carr go to get their "show prep" = Free Republic.

Ditto. FNC is now competing with their own business channel, because it feels more like news.

It is impossible to get news on the West Coast after 5PM from Fox. Everyone goes home and you are stuck with the idiots.

By far, Fox is the thinnest on the ground in terms of people out there gathering news. They break almost nothing first.

During the Egyptian coup, I had it tuned to CNN against my will because at least they had people there covering it.

It’s a bad product, made by a lazy manufacturer who lacked any competitors to keep them sharp. They owned the right, because the right had no where else to go. Now we are just sick of the quality of the product.

If it stays this bad, the cleavage factor has to go way, way up to get me to tune in because there’s no other reason any more.

Fox News as a news organization sucks. It’s really a joke.
