Navy Cmdr. Michael P. Ward II was relieved of his duties aboard the USS Pittsburgh a week after taking command of the attack submarine.
Investigators found that Ward sent his mistress an email from a fictitious person named "Bob" in July, saying that Ward had died unexpectedly, according to a report obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg, a spokeswoman for the Pittsburgh's submarine group in Groton, said Ward has received a letter of reprimand for adultery and other military violations, and paperwork has been filed to remove him from the Navy.
Ward, who had been working at the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, met the woman through an online dating service in October and used an alias to communicate with her by email, the investigation report says. The married officer visited her during trips to the Norfolk, Va., area for training and they spent a weekend together in Williamsburg, Va., in November. The woman was not named.
After moving to Connecticut, Ward learned that his mistress was pregnant. In late July, he met with her to discuss how to handle the pregnancy. Soon afterward the woman lost the baby due to complications, the investigation report says.
Ward was found guilty of Uniform Code of Military Justice violations including dereliction of duty, unbecoming conduct and adultery, and received the punitive letter of reprimand, Cragg said.

Adultery? Only the Commander in Chief can get away with that.
OK, how does one rise to the rank of a full Commander in the US Navy, selected to command a nuclear sub manage to be so stupid as to think that stunt would a) work and b) not get him in some sort of hot water.
What a dumb ass, deserves everything that he got - including the publicity.
This is so lame, I couldn't even imagine an Air Force fighter pilot think he'd get away with it.
The Air Force should dedicate a plaque to the Navy at Colorado Springs for stupidity that should leave the Navy at the bottom of the sleaze-and-stupidity pile in perpetuity.
He’s supposed to be strong enough to send men into battle but he’s not strong enough to tell his mistress that it’s over.
Sociopath. Add in a navy commission, narcissistic personality disorder and a few other things and you probably get this clown.
Great way to end a career.
.. and the fish rots from the head ...
Everything, everyone is going mad !
Let 'em marry, and then when they screw around, toss 'em out for adultery.../sarc
Well it's not like we had Wile E. Coyote commanding a fast attack sub.........Well not exactly..........Well pretty close come to think about it.
But practicing homos are okay? Rilly? The man-hating, anti-American bureaucracy that mandated a universal right to sodomy in the Navy and promotes hood ornaments like Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer is the root of the problem.
Just fake your own death, Seth....
He’s supposed to be strong enough to deny his own sexual appetites, conduct himself in an honorable manner, and remain faithful to his wife and family.
Too bad his mistress wasn’t on active duty... She could’ve gotten an abortion on the boat. /sad truth
Adultery? I am quite sure it is rampant in the services, but it is really the only thing they can get this guy for after humiliating the sub fleet.
It's about as effective as calling into work "dead" to get a day off.
"I got better..."
... Tell her you're dead, Fred ... then go out to sea ...
Heh! Heard that, brother.
