The Coming Global Disorder
Commentary ^ | September 2012 | Bret Stephens

Woody Island is a speck of land in the middle of the South China Sea, not quite a square mile in size. Over the past 80 years it has been occupied by French Indochina, Imperial Japan, the Republic of China, the People’s Republic of China, South Vietnam, and, after a brief war in 1974, the People’s Republic again. Now known as Yongxing to the Chinese (or Phu Lam to the Vietnamese, who still lay claim to it), the island has an airstrip, a harbor, and a few hundred Chinese residents, none native-born, many of whom make their living as fishermen.

An obscure tropical island may seem an odd starting point for an essay on the coming global disorder. Yet great conflicts have been known to flare over little things in faraway places. “On the morning of July 1, [1911,] without more ado, it was announced that His Imperial Majesty the German Emperor had sent his gunboat the Panther to Agadir to maintain and protect German interests,” wrote Winston Churchill in his history of the First World War. The proximate causes of the German foray to this deserted Moroccan bay “were complicated and intrinsically extremely unimportant.” But the real purpose of the kaiser’s move was to test—and, he hoped...

It is January 20, 2013, and Barack Obama has been inaugurated for a second term, following a convulsive post-election period.

The drama began on election night. Obama’s decisive 324–214 electoral-vote margin belied doubts about the integrity of the vote. Mitt Romney won the overall popular vote by racking up wide margins in the states he carried. But Obama won with razor-thin margins in Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The president claimed victory late that night, after Romney decided the country would be ill-served by a succession of brutally fought recounts...

Volunteer for Mitt

They can't cheat their way to a win when it's not close. They can only win by cheating when it's close, e.g. Christine Gregoire stole in 2004 in WA to become governor, Al Franken in 2008 stole in MN to become a senator and gave us the vote needed for Obamacare, etc.

BHO2 has been such a terrible President - it shouldn’t be close. Mitt Romney ought to win in a landslide.

But everytime I talk with folks who voted for Obama last time and regret that action, they wrinkle their noses at mention of Romney. Why? They don’t like him.

There is something about him they do not trust. Folks recognize a phoney when they see one.

I’ve been cheered by the videos that supposedly reveal the ‘real’ Romney, as they come across as sincere and candidaly conservative. That is the guy I want to vote for! But the Romney campaign acts as though ashamed of those videos.

There are some very complicated factors involved in Romney’s campaign, and I suspect they originate with Romney himself.

I have never gotten over Frankenstein winning, when it was so obvious that it was fraud that gave him the few needed votes.

Wasn't Franken among the all rat 60 votes needed to end debate? After Ted Kennedy died, one of the reasons for Scott Brown's election was to stop Obamacare.

Olympia Snowe's perfidy should be over by next January. It has nothing to do with rat voter fraud in close races alluded to in the article!!!!

The author makes an error with Destitute Greeks began flooding into other European countries, -- the total Greek population is 10 million. I would assume only 3 million are working in non-agricultural activities (the rest being old, young or engaged in farm/fishing). that's hardly a flood.

“There are some very complicated factors involved in Romney’s campaign, and I suspect they originate with Romney himself.”

In one sense, you’re correct. In another sense it simply boils down to FL and OH.
