Hanging, empty chair ignites controversy in Austin
Houston Chronicle ^ | September 20, 2012

A folding chair with an American flag, tied with a rope and hanging from a tree has brought a lot of attention to a northwest Austin neighborhood.

Weeks after Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood's chair skit mocked President Obama at the Republican National Convention, an Austin homeowner is drawing criticism for his folding-chair display, which some call a racist attack against the nation's first black president, Austin's KVUE reports on Thursday.

....KVUE says cameras rolled as homeowner Bud Johnson removed the rope and placed the chair on the lawn. He told the TV station those complaining about the display have the wrong idea:

"... It's a misconception," Johnson said. "It has nothing to do with racism. Nothing."

But Austin NAACP leader Nelson Linder disagrees, telling KVUE:

"When you put up a chair in your lawn with a rope around it, you're sending a very powerful message," said Linder. "It's also very insensitive. Black folks know what that means. It happens in the workplace for example. Nooses in the workplaces are unacceptable. It's no different in your yard. Even though it's private property, it goes beyond individual expression."

Did they get upset about the crucifix of Christ dipped in urine, and people lining up and spending money to see it and elite newspapers protecting "freedom of speech"? Point made.

A hanging chair or thousands of hanging chairs is the least of our worries.

I don’t see news organizations beating down the door to talk to the New Black Panthers and question them. And they have made actual threats of bodily harm!

F-it I am tired of this one-sided BS game. I don’t care anymore.

I think it’s hilarious that an empty chair is no longer an empty chair. Obviously more people watched Clint’s speech than want to let on.

For those of us concerned about the First Amendment we ought to be very concerned about the tendency in the left today to trump the First Amendment with subjectivism.

We see it in the immediate news reports today concerning the flap over the anti-Muslim film trailer and whether the federal government can and should block its distribution only because it is offensive to Muslims and Muslims will get violent. This is not a new position for the left but so far it has been concentrated within the black and the Muslim "communities." Witness the removal of the Washington DC Councilman for the use of the word "niggardly "quite properly by referring to fiscal stinginess but the ignorant African-American community demanded his political execution because it did not understand the dictionary meaning of the word.

In other words, their subjective reaction to the speech was all that mattered. Not the real meaning of the word, not the intent of speech, and certainly not any First Amendment protection for the speech.

We see in this quote set forth above the assumption by the spokesman that that which is offensive to African-Americans (or because "black folks know what that means" ) trumps not only the rights of property-for which the left as no regard and upon which it predicates no civil, human, or constitutional rights-but for the Bill of Rights itself.

So the Bill of Rights is now made conditional upon identity politics. Pretty soon all your constitutional rights will be determined by your DNA.

I happen to think that obama’s new blood soaked flag tribute to himself is racist. It is, after all, mostly whites that are dying for his brand of muslim support and he seems to be enjoying every American life that is lost.

It's not just the First Amendment. It's the entire Consitution.

Inside every liberal, there lurks a totalitarian.

The American Left would be perfectly happy with a dictatorship -- so long as it was one of their's.

With every day that passes, this becomes more and more obvious.

The thing that struck me about the news video of the man with the chair was his anger.

I believe there are millions of Americans just as angry as that man who will stop at nothing to vote out the Kenyan.

Oh for the love of Pete!!! Does this mean when I wear my black pants or blazer or holster I'm being racist? Get off the pity pot, people. Black is a color, not a political statement, not something "bad". These people must have a lot of time on their hands to practice their sensitivity. Too much! If the chair had had a doll in it, would it still be an insult?

Oh, wait, I GET IT! The empty chair (a sartorial comment on the pres) is now off limits, as it represents Zero. Ban empty chairs! All chairs must now be occupied!!

thousands of hanging chairs

Or, how about millions of hanging chairs? What about having "Hanging Empty Chair Day" just to protest harassment of Bud Johnson? Let's keep everyone busy investigating THAT instead of doing something productive. Who cares if a 70+ year-old-man hangs a chair in his front yard?

Finally the American people are waking up. Instead of throwing tea bags into the harbor, they are doing all kinds of things with an empty chair. Empty chairs need to appear everywhere. I've got one in my front yard right now.

An empty chair propped on an overpass.
An empty chair on top of a building.
An empty chair pulled on a rope by an airplane.
An empty chair sitting on the shoulder of the road.
An empty chair mounted on top of a van.
An empty chair on the lawn of every courthouse possible.
An empty chair _____________________________________ .

Put it on there and calmly walk out. So far, it's not against the law.

Business people, wake up! Offer a REAL discount to anyone who comes into your business between now and election day and says "I like the empty chair idea!". Let the Obama supporters pay more for everything.

Let’s also talk about the various controversies ignited by the racist NAACP. Let us examine the controversies ignited by the racists Holder and Obuma. Finally, let’s take a peek at the racists at the Houston Chronicle and discover why they won’t investigate all these damn racists running around all over the place.

I think an empty chair is OK, a hanging chair is offensive. However, I also think hanging Nixon or Bush in effigy is offensive.

Don't remember any libs getting all wee-weed up over this:

The Halloween display was shocking enough for the Secret Service to investigate. Now, the LAPD has declared it's not a hate crime -- just bad taste.

Anger over Halloween display of Palin with noose

Morissette does admit that if he had put up a display resembling Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama hanging from a noose, "people would've probably thrown things through our windows."

"The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman -- for our country, in the history of our country," he explained to KCAL.

Google “chadmichael morissette” and see some of his other works. He is a window display artist. On second thought, you may not want to see some of his other works. You have been given fair warning.

Actually, they'd get tired of it damn fast.

And find a way to blame it on the people who tried to prevent it from happening.

Austin Man Hangs Empty Chair From Tree Symbolizing President Obama

A Northwest Austin homeowner, who hung a chair from a tree meant to symbolize President Obama, has taken it down.

The political blog burntorangereport.com first talked about the display in the Spicewood Estates area Wednesday night.

The fold-up chair, with an American flag attached to it, was hung from a tree in front of Bud Johnson’s home and some neighbors complained that it was racist.

KEYE TV News wanted to find out from Johnson about the chair and why he put it up. KEYE TV reporter Lydia Pantazes and photojournalist Mario Pena went to his house Thursday morning. As they arrived, Johnson was taking down the chair and he advised Pantazes and Pena “to get the hell away.”

When Pantazes asked him why he hung the chair from the tree, he responded “Haven’t you heard of the Clint Eastwood thing with the empty chair?”

Johnson also said he’s not a racist and that he doesn’t dislike any race. In addition, he said the chair was not being “lynched”, and when Pantazes asked why he had it hanging from the tree, he said the tree was "the only place I had to put the damn thing.” Johnson then placed the chair on his lawn a few feet away from the tree.

Pantazes talked to a neighbor who told her that Johnson is an overall “good neighbor and a nice guy. He’s just a really conservative Republican.” The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, thought the issue was taken out of context.

Robert Stephenson, who also lives in the area, said there’s “no way you can take that the wrong way." He called the display was "pretty racist."

“I’m glad he took it down. I just hope he don’t put it back up,” Stephenson said.
