Pro-American Libyans Besiege Group Suspected in U.S. Envoy’s Death
NY Times ^ | Sept 21 2012 | SULIMAN ALI ZWAY and KAREEM FAHIM

BENGHAZI, Libya — Galvanized by anger over the killing of the popular American ambassador here last week, thousands of Libyans marched through this city on Friday, demanding the disarming of the militias that helped topple the dictatorship but have troubled the country with their refusal to disband.

In a show of mass frustration at the armed groups, protesters seized control of several militia headquarters on Friday night and handed them over to Libya’s national army. They also stormed the headquarters of Ansar al-Sharia, a hard-line Islamist militia that has been linked to the attack on the United States mission in Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.

As members of the militia fled their headquarters, protesters there set at least one vehicle on fire, and there were unconfirmed reports that several were wounded by gunfire from the departing gunmen.

The killing of the ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens, who was considered a hero in Benghazi because he worked closely with the rebels who toppled Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi last year, appeared to be the spark for the protests on Friday, though hardly its only cause. The militias, which started forming soon after the February 2011 uprising against Colonel Qaddafi, emerged as a parallel and often menacing authority after his downfall, seizing territory for themselves and asserting their authority over the fledgling government.

That’s a postitive step. And this is what will happen next: AQIL will identify the leaders of today’s march, and car bombs will go off outside of their homes and businesses.

Bolsheviks don’t screw around with mamby-pamby Mensheviks, to stretch an analogy.

I remember some hopeful “peace marches” in Lebenon over the decades. They always ended with car bombs, assassinations, and tears of frustration.

This is BS. The provincial militias have existed for years, including when Kaddhafi was in power. I would really like to see the NYT stop jerking out disinformation. The Libyan interim government was composed of militias, organized by the No. 1 militia leader, Osama al-Juwali.

al-Juwali organized the different militias and mustered them into the new Libyan army. This is no bloody secret.

I hate the NYT on so many different levels and am frustrated that these commies never show up within 100-miles of where I live.

Certainly there are several AQ training camps in Libya and Egypt. A proper response would be to attack them preferably with special forces, or drones, and wipe them out - No surrogates - US forces only.

True. Kaddhafi never had firm control over large areas of the country including much of the Benghazi area. That area of Libya sent more suicide bombers to Iraq than any other area of the muslim world.

As far as I'm concerned, people who are buying into the current act are going to get burned.

Nay, this is a bigger mess, it exposes his lack of, or willful ignorance, of intelligence reports.

This reaction against the militia’s shouldn’t have been a surprise to the intelligence community.

This doesn’t shield Obama, it raises more questions.

....and clean up any loose evidence about how they toppled Qadaffi and looted the trillions for the EU

the protesters would be confused if they knew why the US toppled Qadaffi, it wasnt to help THEM , it was a robbery

and Ambassador Stevens knew too much about it

Spot on, cripplecreek. One of the roving bands of militia fighters caught Kaddhafi, took his gold-plated glock away and used it to blow his brains out.

Such is the life of a dictator. Kaddhafi should have taken note of how Mussolini was hung upside down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. Maybe if Kaddhafi was a tad more pleasant, he could have had a chicken coop named after him.
