BENGHAZI, Libya Galvanized by anger over the killing of the popular American ambassador here last week, thousands of Libyans marched through this city on Friday, demanding the disarming of the militias that helped topple the dictatorship but have troubled the country with their refusal to disband.
In a show of mass frustration at the armed groups, protesters seized control of several militia headquarters on Friday night and handed them over to Libyas national army. They also stormed the headquarters of Ansar al-Sharia, a hard-line Islamist militia that has been linked to the attack on the United States mission in Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.
As members of the militia fled their headquarters, protesters there set at least one vehicle on fire, and there were unconfirmed reports that several were wounded by gunfire from the departing gunmen.
The killing of the ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens, who was considered a hero in Benghazi because he worked closely with the rebels who toppled Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi last year, appeared to be the spark for the protests on Friday, though hardly its only cause. The militias, which started forming soon after the February 2011 uprising against Colonel Qaddafi, emerged as a parallel and often menacing authority after his downfall, seizing territory for themselves and asserting their authority over the fledgling government.

That’s a postitive step. And this is what will happen next: AQIL will identify the leaders of today’s march, and car bombs will go off outside of their homes and businesses.
Bolsheviks don’t screw around with mamby-pamby Mensheviks, to stretch an analogy.
I remember some hopeful “peace marches” in Lebenon over the decades. They always ended with car bombs, assassinations, and tears of frustration.
Its show time. FBI are over there to spin things
I hope you all look at the muslim brotherhood flag and comparte it to Obama’s design.
How embarrassing for the current administration.....
Anything to keep the money flowing.
NY Slimes to the rescue for Obama.
“The militias, which started forming soon after the February 2011 uprising against Colonel Qaddafi, emerged as a parallel and often menacing authority after his downfall, seizing territory for themselves and asserting their authority over the fledgling government.”
This is BS. The provincial militias have existed for years, including when Kaddhafi was in power. I would really like to see the NYT stop jerking out disinformation. The Libyan interim government was composed of militias, organized by the No. 1 militia leader, Osama al-Juwali.
al-Juwali organized the different militias and mustered them into the new Libyan army. This is no bloody secret.
I hate the NYT on so many different levels and am frustrated that these commies never show up within 100-miles of where I live.
“Galvanized by’ Hilary and her hench-fems, who said the Americans would be mad, Obama would lose, and Romney would cut off their MONEY.
Meanwhile in Pakistan the Government declared today a holiday and that ginned up the demonstrations against the US.
Or ? the re-election committee seeing his poll numbers going down are there to clean up the mess.
Reagan would have. Big time. Craterized them. And how.
Nay, this is a bigger mess, it exposes his lack of, or willful ignorance, of intelligence reports.
This reaction against the militia’s shouldn’t have been a surprise to the intelligence community.
This doesn’t shield Obama, it raises more questions.
the protesters would be confused if they knew why the US toppled Qadaffi, it wasnt to help THEM , it was a robbery
and Ambassador Stevens knew too much about it
“Kaddhafi never had firm control over large areas of the country including much of the Benghazi area.”
Spot on, cripplecreek. One of the roving bands of militia fighters caught Kaddhafi, took his gold-plated glock away and used it to blow his brains out.
Such is the life of a dictator. Kaddhafi should have taken note of how Mussolini was hung upside down on meathooks from the roof of an Esso gas station. Maybe if Kaddhafi was a tad more pleasant, he could have had a chicken coop named after him.
In the mideast they will kiss our butts today and shove a stick up them tomorrow and that includes these “peace protesters”.
>> Galvanized by anger over the killing of the popular American ambassador here last week, thousands of Libyans
The Internet will destroy Islam.
You’re right. Obama wanted everyone to believe that the attack was just a bunch of crazy lunatic Libyans furious about a youtube video. He doesn’t want to admit that it was a planned al-qaeda attack he was warned about but did nothing to stop. The Libyans won’t play along and be his patsies.
Obama didn't seem to be aware of that. Of course, their is no hero but the Omnipotent Obama.
I love it when a socialist’s well laid plan doesn’t come together.....now, maybe some justice for US ambassador Chris Stevens.
From all have gleamed your thought is the most accurate, next to someone wants payment or a return of what was taken. Neither will happen. Wait till people inside of their countries in the EU get wind of what is coming after their hides due to lack of loot being returned. Even those who had nothing to do with it will pay a price because someone is angry enough to extract a price. Dang fog.
There’s hope for Libya - not POKeeStahn!
I don’t believe the story, simple as that.
You have that right cripp and I’ll bet damn near every one, (if not all), of these savages rioting now were dancing in their streets with joy as innocent Americans were slaughtered on 9/11. ‘Moderate’ islam my butt, but still idiot sheeple right here in the good old USA buy that ‘moderate’ B/S idea.
You know better than that. This will get him another Peace Prize. [sigh]
but we didnt attack...i find that strange..just sent fbi to investigat...coverup or clean up. I dont think we have much intel anymore..its probably been disassembled.

The people have spoken.
Or should I say "the folks?"
God is not mocked....patient though.
I need to see this reported from a reputable news source before I beleive a word of it. Liberals lie and lie and lie.
Do you truly put faith in this NYT article Travis? After immediate Afghan apologizing by this admin, I am having much trouble swallowing this story.
Obama: "Because of me, protesters are saying that they are sorry."
Most of the time when Ulsterman is asking the White House Insider if they have any kind of information they heard about the middle east, the WHI says, that it’s just their own opinion.
So just like Iran, this bastion of Freedom and Liberty and Independence will stand by and let another opportunity to pry open the cell doors of islam be lost. Damn.
Oh well, America choose a Communist Moslum as President.
This Presidency will be known as the decade of lost opportunity.
Seems the NYT is spinning the headline by indicating the Libyans are ‘pro-American’.
I think it’s more like the regular folks there are fed up with the militant groups and are making an effort to drive them out. .....Think of it as an American town deciding that the local gangstas have caused too much trouble and they rise up and drive them out. ....jmo
The more I read the more I agree with you. Looks like someone has found a way for a twofer or a three-fer.
I saw the headline: Pro-American Libyans
Thought to myself, this has to be satire. Then I saw that the article was ran in the NYTimes.
If I may be so bold, can I equate Pro-American Libyans to Pro-American Muslims? I spent time in both Afghanistan and Iraq. There are some that would love to come to America and live the life they see on the internet: Jersey Shore, American Idol, you know-all the important stuff. Do they want the American Dollar? Yep. Do they want to be able to go by vegetables and not worry about getting blown to bits? Yep.
But I have never encountered a ‘Pro American’, anywhere in that part of the world. And I spent the better part of 5 years there. Maybe there a bit different in Northern Africa.
The Internet is a technology, not a doctrine; and as such it is mostly neutral. Why do you think there are Islamic web sites?
