Lefty Attack: Mitt Romney “Darkened” Skin Before Univision Event
Townhall.com ^ | September 22, 2012 | Daniel Doherty

Posted on 09/22/2012 11:44:48 AM PDT by Kaslin

At a time when 23 million Americans are unemployed and unemployed, the national debt is exploding, and poverty rates are the highest they’ve ever been, the national media should be focused on issues of paramount importance. That didn’t happen on Friday. Instead, at a “Meet the Candidate” event in Florida sponsored by Univision, a bunch of Lefty bloggers accused Governor Romney of “darkening his skin” in order to curry favor with Latino voters. Appalling:

Mitt Romney appeared on Univision's "Meet the Candidate" event on Wednesday evening to talk about issues of importance to Latino voters, including immigration, education and foreign policy. But thousands of bloggers, Facebook subscribers and Twitter users across the country focused more on the candidate's complexion than on his message.

Social media platforms were abuzz on Wednesday with the insinuation that the GOP candidate had somehow darkened his skin before coming on Univision's forum. The accusation was reported on by The Huffington Post, Gawker and Wonkette, among others, receiving thousands of comments on the sites combined.

So is it true? Of course not:

Here at ABC/Univision, we wanted to clear the air a bit and find out what really happened.

So we asked the man who saw it first hand -- makeup artist Lazz Rodriguez, who applied powder and concealer to the candidate's skin that night. The verdict?

"When he walked in, I remember thinking, 'Wow this is tanner than I thought he was,' but I think he's just been outside a lot lately for his campaign," Rodriguez noted. "It was definitely a real tan."

Rodriguez has been a makeup artist for 25 years, and has applied cosmetics to hundreds of famous faces, including many celebrities and politicians, and a handful of presidents.

….

Rodriguez says that his makeup of choice for the evening was MAC NW30, a medium-range loose powder that he applies to "cut the glare" of stage lights.

The ABC/Univision News team decided to investigate the claims that Romney was wearing powder that was too dark, stopping in at the local Miami MAC store after Thursday's "Meet the Candidate" event with Obama to test out the exact make and model. Indeed, we concluded after various trials that the NW30 was a medium-ranged hue that looked natural on a range of beige skin tones. The color was perhaps a tad too dark on Politics Editor Jordan Fabian, just about right on reporter Julia Saenz, and a shade too light on Miami-boy and Managing Editor Fernando Rodriguez-Vila. But, even when we caked the stuff on, NW30 wasn't notably dark on a range of skin tones under harsh lights.

"I also don't want this to jeopardize a career I've worked so hard to build in this field," he said. "He was tan from being out in the sun on the campaign trail -- that's the only possible explanation."

I’m a bit surprised by the frivolity of these accusations. Then again, if the guy I was supporting for president (a candidate who campaigned on the slogan “Hope & Change” in 2008) admitted during a Q & A session “you can’t change Washington from the inside,” it’s easy to understand why liberals are freaking out. Forward!

Palms are always going to be whiter than other parts of the body. With the top of the hands it's harder to tell how light they are.

If it was a tan job, at least it was better than Kerry's, though I wouldn't advise following this strategy if Romney ever appears on BET.

...at least Michael Jackson came "out" in the end.
"You could argue that his ever more pallid complexion made him the pithiest shorthand for pop’s history: in splendid contrast to Little Richard and Pat Boone, he was the first black singer to become his own lucrative white cover version." -- Mark Steyn

And then, the narrator said breathlessly, Goldilocks saw Barack Obama, and said, “He’s just right.”

DU has been in a full blown daytime drama over this.

They described it as a clueless Al Jolsonish attempt to hispander.

They've posted pics from earlier in the day to compare and contrast, close-ups, different angles...they're obsessing.

It looks like he stayed a little too long in a tanning bed (there is a distinct untanned area that a hat wouldn't explain.) It's the timing that seems to be an unfortunate coincidence.

Forget tanning beds; the geniuses over at DU spend way too much time with their heads in toaster ovens.

why don’t ya’ll listen to the video - and pass that along instead of even repeating this ‘face color’ deflecting.

Watching the video and the crowds reaction - no wonder the media is pushing this face color story - and EVERYONE who discusses it, pro or con - keeps the story going, aiding and abetting

so how about passing along the actual link to the video?

Exactly. People get tanned when they spend a lot of time outside in the sun. Anyone with a little bit of common sense knows that

Rodriguez says that his makeup of choice for the evening was MAC NW30, a medium-range loose powder that he applies to "cut the glare" of stage lights.

I looked on the U.S. M.A.C. Cosmetics Web site, and could not find any loose powder in this shade.

They don't have a lot of loose powders, but this one was the item that came in several shades: Select Sheer Loose Powder.

http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/shaded/159/474/Products/Face/Powder/Select-SheerLoose/index.tmpl

Shades listed: NC5, NC15, NC20, NC30, NC40, NC45.

I did not see "NW30" loose powder listed on the U.S. or Canadian Web sites of this company.

However, the shade "NW30" IS available in the Studio Fix powder + foundation format.

Any makeup experts out there care to comment?

Gawker has always been a good site for droolers and screamers, but I had thought Wonkette was halfway intelligent.

All I can really add to this discussion is that Fox has THE BEST makeup people in the business. Esp. lipstick, they’ve got that down.

If I ever hit the lottery I’m going to hire the fox makeup people for my daughter’s wedding.

They are all three a site for droolers and screamers. I remember when Wonkette once claimed that Jenna Bush was pregnant and that she has to get married. Which of course wasn’t true

Probably. By genetic inheritance he's at least "quadroon" by background, allowing his babydaddy a 50/50 Arab Semitic Caucasian/East African mix, with East Africans being somewhere between 20% and 50% Semitic Caucasian background themselves, thanks to ancient migrations into East Africa out of the Arabian Peninsula during the great desertification of Arabia Felix some 4500-6000 years ago, so that all Somalis, Ethiopians, Masai, and other East African peoples would be better described as "mulattoes" than full-blooded black African.

IF Obama's African starting point was "mulatto", then he is "quadroon" (cuarteron, quartaron); but if Barack Sr. the Deflowerer Babydaddy was himself already "quadroon" by virtue of his multi-culti slavemongering background, then therefore Barry Soetoro is "octoroon" (quinteron, ochavado, or albino in Spanish).

The joker in the deck is that West African black people, the "true Negroes" of lore, are themselves about 20-25% Caucasian by east-to-west migration of the Semitic Caucasian strain since antiquity, and cross-desert migration of other Caucasian peoples such as the Garamantes, who left Libya in Trajan's time under pressure from the related Berbers, and settled around Koromantse (yes, the names are related centuries later; by admixture, they now appear to be African Negroes despite retaining many of their pre-migration cultural and religious beliefs).

Thus modern West Africans would be correctly called in Spanish negro fino, i.e. 1/4 white; but in the reckoning of the Spanish, Portuguese, and everyone else, this was the starting point for figuring "blackness" in the elaborate Iberian classification scheme, which was imported into English and confirmed by statute in colonial times.

In other words, it's all screwed up unless/until someone socks the old DNA test to one's background.

Wonkette once claimed that Jenna Bush was pregnant

Hmmm, well, considering what it would take to breach the walls of Carlyle Group's confidentiality, one can only imagine the Great Wall of privacy that surrounds the Bush girls. They could have positively ghastly histories and we'd never know; but if they lived upright lives in a fishbowl, people like Wonkette and the slithery, facilely flexuous Arianna Beardington-Puffington (remember when she was conservative?) would never get anywhere retailing their stuff.

“a bunch of Lefty bloggers accused Governor Romney of “darkening his skin” in order to curry favor with Latino voters.”

I bet Obama darkens his skin! He sure as heck hates the white part. There is no bigger panderer. Or liar. The left has really sunk to it’s lowest with this Romney bashing. It’s more contrived than what they put Palin through. And Romney hasn’t even dragged a pregnant, unwed daughter on stage.
