US State Dept. blasts CNN report on Stevens' diary
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | September 23, 2012 | LYNN ELBER

CNN reported on the personal journal of slain American ambassador Christopher Stevens over objections from his family, a State Department spokesman said Saturday.

The news channel, in a story posted online Saturday, said that it found a journal belonging to Stevens four days after he died in a Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Three other Americans also were killed.

CNN broke a pledge to the late ambassador's family that it wouldn't report on the diary, said State Department spokesman Philippe Reines, a senior adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In a blistering statement, Reines called CNN's actions "indefensible."

The channel said in the story online that it took "newsworthy tips" from Stevens' diary and confirmed them with other sources. Citing an unidentified source "familiar with Stevens' thinking," CNN said that the ambassador was concerned about security threats in Benghazi and a "rise in Islamic extremism."

In a statement Saturday, CNN defended its use of the journal's contents and asked "why is the State Department now attacking the messenger."

...."Given the truth of how this was handled, CNN patting themselves on the back is disgusting," Reines said in his statement.

“Wouldn’t some head honcho at CNN think that they might need to call the CIA, or Dept of Defense to see if there was anything that should be kept secret???”

Laughable. Did NYT check before publishing the Pentagon Papers? Of course not.

If CNN found the diary then that means that State did not sterilize the scene after the incident. Who knows what secrets are now with the terrorist organizations.

At face value.

No way that there weren’t people in that location checking out what was there. Could they have overlooked something. Possible. You can bet the CIA would have had a clean up crew there before 4 days was up.

But I don’t believe that journal could have survived the fire. Did Stevens have it on him when he went inside the consulate???????????????For what purpose??? If so, how did it survive?

I really believe someone planted it.

Beck also talked about the time-line, the Ambassador was killed before the protests, possible setup or meeting gone bad....only caught part of the discussion. He mentioned CIA and the lying from media, Obama and Clinton. Basically the real story has not been told

I don’t get the whole journal story. I don’t get how reporters just stumbled upon it. I also don’t get why everyone is coming down on CNN.CNN probably had a good idea we were all being lied to. At least the family got the journal back. If it wasn’t CNN then it would have been somebody else. Obama lied to us not CNN. And I don’t ever watch CNN but I won’t attack unless I see reason.

...the ambassador helped arm the rebels...

Your post reminded me of something about which I know very little. I wonder how this compares to the Iran-Contra situation. Will there be hearings?

>To me it is extremely logical that they would not want it in anyone’s hands and control except their own.<

In this case, the journal contains information that is vital to the whole picture regarding an attack on sovereign United States land and on US citizens. However much a family might want this journal immediately, it is important evidence.

That said, once again the State department dropped the ball in not securing this scene. How the heck was CNN allowed to simply waltz in and take whatever they saw?

Or, did a traitor in the US set this up with a handy film to blame. They sure jumped on that film . Yes they did.

[What this tells us is that the Clinton State Dept.
made no effort to secure the site AFTER the fact,
makes you wonder what else was found scattered in
the wreckage.]

Computer hard drives, signals codes, access codes to classified data sites, payroll ledgers for local agents, psych evaluations of prominent Libyans. . .

The State Dept is SO fixated on bringing the US down to size that they apparently had no mechanism in place to secure the Embassy after the attacks and collect sensitive data.

Hillary's operation is a sham and hopefully this will be revealed more in coming days/weeks/months and years.

I’m with you. It’s a cover story to divert attention. It had to be planted.

I was reading stories about this the other night and watched the CBS news story that shows the “safe house” and the blood splattered walls on the roof along with a guy picking up parts of someone’s flap jacket that were evidently blown off the body. It was very weird. I had the impression that the video was shot days after the attack occurred. But I would need to go back and look. I was surprised that there was no one making sure the crime scene was left intact. If an American CBS reporter could walk freely around that place, then why couldn’t the FBI? There were shell casings and other things.
