Ancient site needs saving not destroying (Chinese to destroy Buddhist site for copper mine)
CNN ^ | Sept 23, 2012 | Brent Huffman

This site is called Mes Aynak and is nothing short of awe-inspiring: a massive walled-in Buddhist city featuring massive temples, monasteries, and thousands of Buddhist statues that managed to survive looters and the Taliban. Holding a key position on the Silk Road, Mes Aynak was also an international hub for traders and pilgrims from all over Asia.

Mes Aynak is set for destruction at the end of December 2012. All of the temples, monasteries, statues as well as the Bronze age material will all be destroyed by a Chinese government-owned company called China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC). Six villages and the mountain range will also be destroyed to create a massive open-pit style copper mine.

In 2007, MCC outbid competitors with a $3 billion bid to lease the area for 30 years. MCC plans to extract over $100 billion worth of copper located directly beneath the Buddhist site.

This is as bad as what the Taliban were doing. And its no wonder that the Afghan government would allow it, since it is a Buddhist site, but why are WE allowing it?

perhaps because we don’t have a dog in that fight. We should at least send a few thousand tree huggers to demonstrate and make their lives miserable. If we can do it for a freaking fruit fly, a millennium old historical site should get them somewhat exited.

While tree huggers might not get involved in saving Judeo-Christian sites, they might if told that it is an ancient Buddhist sites, to be saved from evil capitalism/development.

China is going to get some bad JuJu coming their way. They are too stupid and greedy to understand some things you just don’t mess with!

This would be excellent, would grab my popcorn and watch the hippies get beat down by the chicom authorities, would be like a rougher version of whale wars, can we sell this on pay per view ;)

Too bad the Chinese aren't destroying a mosque. Watching Obummer and the Hildebeast twist themselves into pretzels trying to figure out who to kowtow to would be some of the best "does not compute" television since James T. Kirk outwitted Nomad.

Remember this, when you hear whining about how the British Museum (or other western museums) have pillaged artifacts of other cultures. Preserved, is the more accurate word.

How sad. I doubt there’s anything that can stop them.

Yes, but when the evil capitalist development is done by Communists, it’s OK.

the US is, correctly, held to a higher standard than the Chicoms or the Islamofascists. We hold ourselves to a higher standard because our culture is of a higher development standard.

No.

But our OWN homegrown 'enviromentalists' would be in a ballistic orbit!

I can tell you from personal job-related experience that this sort of thing happens ALL the time in the US. You wouldn’t believe the horror stories I could tell you...but, I won’t. Especially not on here...too many spies. Walmart is one of the biggest ones guilty of it though...They bulldoze anything. Stop shopping there, if you want to make a difference. I could list page after page of unethical corporations, but bad things would happen from it... Ironically, the petroleum companies now days do more for preserving archaeological sites than ANY other groups, including the Federal Government... you all have it so backwards... no offense meant.
