I suspect the most important thing is student IQ. High IQ teachers probably successfully avoid low IQ students or refuse to put up with them.

While what you say is true, controlled studies show teachers IQ (not educational “attainment”, as measured by “advanced” degrees, especially in “education”) strongly affects student outcomes.
I, mean, like, what a surprise, smart kids with smart teachers do better than smart kids with dumb teachers. But so do dumb kids. I seriously believe my scheme would benefit the vast majority of students. Clearly some very “smart” people would make awful teachers (Albert Einstein comes to mind) and some mediocre intellects make great teachers, especially in the lower grades.
