McCain Suspends Campaign, Shocks Republicans
Obama, taken by surprise by McCain's announcement, says the debate should go on

The sound of jaws hitting the floor reverberated in Washington this afternoon when Republican presidential nominee John McCain announced that he would suspend his campaign and asked that Friday's debate be postponed. Why? Because of the "historic crisis in our financial system," said McCain, who intends to return to Washington tomorrow to participate in Wall Street bailout negotiations on the Hill.
In explaining his decision, McCain also referred to 9/11, patriotism, and partisan divisions that have "prevented us from addressing our national challenges." What he didn't mention was that Democratic nominee Barack Obama—at the urging of GOP Sen. Tom Coburn—had called him early this morning with an invitation to issue a joint statement that would outline agreed-upon principles and conditions for the Treasury's bailout proposal and urge Congress and the White House to join in the statement. And that when McCain called him back at 2:30 this afternoon, the two candidates had agreed on some broad principles.

Oh, boy - I remember this and thought, at the time:
“You have to suspend your freakin’ campaign to go to a meeting?????”
Gosh. Idjut.
He may have thought he was doing the right thing. but he could have serveedd his country better by trying harder to defeat Hussein.
I only needed to look at his gushing fawning “concession” speech to tell he was in it to LOSE all the way.
FUJM!
So instead we elected Obama and spent trillions on jack.
McCain was one of Obama’s chief enablers. McCain basically punted and didn’t run a campaign.
Now we have Governor Romney.
Romney campaigned hard against Gingrich and Santorum. He showed us all what an effective campaign looks like.
We now await Gov. Romney to begin a similar serious campaign against Obama.
And that drove the stake through the heart of the McCain campaign. From then on, it was all Obama.
Frankly I’ve become convinced over the last four years that he had a small stroke.
McCain didn't want to win, because he was far to enthralled and impressed by Obama. That comment about "no reason to fear an Obama presidency" wasn't a gaffe. It was a tacit endorsement. No one will ever convince me McCain wanted that victory.
Bated breath. Chills running up and down legs.
In the background the announcer whispers the results on the 11th hole ~
I think you really nailed it. He as much as endorsed obama in early October and mailed it in from that moment on. Wanted to go down in history as the gracious loser to the first black president rather than a winning candidate. To paraphrase John Calhoun, he decided he’d “rather be wrong than president.”
All McCain had to do to win was come out against TARP.
I was just going to post the same. Suspending the campaign and the “You have nothing to fear with an Obama presidency- He’s a good man” comment ended any chance McCain had.
Needed extra time to reach across the aisle.
Possibly, or the promise of one.
See.... Once Palin's popularity started taking off, the men behind the curtain knew that McCain might win. That was not in their plans. They had to dump Hillary because Palin made the 'sex' card useless, so they played the 'race' card. But even the race card wasn't enough to rig the outcome, and the MSM had already done it's best to try to bury Palin, so the only choice left was to pull McCain out of the game.
And it worked.
We are seeing a parallel situation in regard to Romney's tax returns. When he delayed releasing them it was because he was hiding something. Now that he has the issue becomes he overpaid his taxes in order to make himself look good.
This sort of thing is constantly employed against Republicans, never Democrats. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Anybody ever seen the MSM getting its collective panties all in a bunch over Reid's refusal to release his tax returns?
I wonder if Sarah Palin learned anything?..

He also mealy mouthed around about cancelling the first debate, which was to be at Ole Miss, and kept that in limbo for several days before deciding to attend after all.
All pathetic and misguided.
No, they couldn't have done that effectively, because Obama was in the senate, too, and he just kept on campaigning. As I remember, Obama said they could call him if needed.
McCain showed he had an inflated sense of his own value during the "crisis". No one cared if he was in Washington or not.
Yep, but in hindsight I think that if we were in the same situation again the lousy, wet, worthless Repubs would fold again and again and again. Hell they have folded on everything of significant since we gave them the HOuse in 2010!
