I've been watching the old Victory at Sea documentaries about World War II recently and I'm struck with the sheer ferocity the U.S. waged in fighting it. That war was hell but it lasted only about four years.

That war was hell but it lasted only about four years. In WWII war was hell because we fought to destroy our enemies and win the war.
Now we just fight for permission to give them stuff and we let them treat us like fools while we psychoanalyze ourselves to find out why they don't like us.
