American High School Band Marches with Hammer & Sickle (PA)
Fox News Radio ^ | 09-24-2012 | By Todd Starnes

A Pennsylvania high school marching band is raising eyebrows with a halftime performance that commemorates the Russian revolution, complete with red flags, olive military-style uniforms, and giant hammers and sickles.

“St. Petersburg: 1917” is the theme for the New Oxford High School Marching Band. Ironically, the school’s athletic teams are called the Colonials and their colors are red, white and blue. The band’s website features a picture of the group with students holding a hammer and sickle.

About half of the public school teachers I’ve known are Socialists. Why not then root for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics? Maybe next they can root for the National Socialist Party?

This was a spontaneous show put on by the kids like Judy Garland and Micky Roony used to do. There was no planning or encouragement by the skool’s apparatchiks at all.

Go after the district, the principal and the teacher!!!

I used to always wonder how the Nazis got away with the honorific murders of millions. Mom had gone and visited a few prison camps after the war and always said the population knew what was going on.

I had a uncle who was in a prisoner of war camp twice.

As I sit here and type this I see how they did it. The regime is in full control. They have been for years I used to laugh at what they said thinking it was funny. not now.

I’m sure he kids are astonished that this would cause a fuss. Im sure they have been taught that the Russian revolution was a joyous event and a stellar moment in world history. This could explain why half the freaking country see nothing wrong with communism.

PS: Thats a pretty poor represntation of a sickle. It looks more likea sword. And the hammer is way too big. They couldn’t even get that right.

There was no planning or encouragement by the skool’s apparatchiks at all.

And that's a problem. These kids have no earthly concept of the human suffering that takes place under these regimes and leaders. They have romantic notions about Marx and Che Guevara and think they're cool simply because they're not us. Ask them, if communism is so great to people, why do their governments have to keep them there by force, why are they closed societies, why do people literally risk life and limb - like paddling a rowboat from Cuba to the U.S. - to escape? Why, when you look at a nighttime satellite map, is North Korea jet black and South Korea bursting with light?

They're so spoiled, they don't know how good they've got it or how awful life can be. They just know communism would be a "change" and don't you know all CHANGE is progressive and good...right until you fall off the cliff. Pray for their enlightenment.

This is so non-newsworthy. Sounds like this is a state marching competition year so they’re going all out. I doubt they’re “celebrating” anything but that the director thought the music score was great and the routine technical enough to advance them to state. The band is getting attention already so the judges will be expecting a clean performance.

FWIW, our drill team’s routine one year ended with them being killed but no one got their panties in a wad and went whining to the msm.

ANy one else counting yard signs? In a three county area we’ve found over twenty for republican and one group along the side of the road (not in a person’s yard) for the D.

This previously D county is now R. Thank you BO and WJC. You two did what no local people could do!

Next January is the 80th anniversary of the Machtergreifung (Power Seizure), as the Nazis called their takeover of Germany.

In the world of high school bands, the months following the football season is the concert season, so maybe the band should hold a concert commemorating the event. They could play songs such as as Harry Scheier's 1934 hit Adolf Hitler's Favorite Flower is the Simple Edelweiss.

Again, this is probably their marching contest show so the band members buy their own t-shirts. The drum majors’ outfits and the drill team and flag corps costumes are usually paid for out of their budgets which do come from your tax dollars or from proceeds from the kids’ fundraisers. The music scores and routines, depending on how wealthy the school district is, is either paid out of their budgets or through the kids’ fundraisers.

True story: in high school I was in Model UN with a couple of other pranksters and we were assigned the Soviet Union in the Security Council. Our first day we walked in 10 minutes late playing “Back in the USSR” on a boom box. We had a blast playing the Ruskies.

They wouldn’t need a practice gymnasium if everyone was in the marching band. They had to pass a ruling here to limit outside of class time hours they could practice because they were putting in so much time.

If anyone had bothered to look on the school site, they would have had their questions answered. The band parents man the concession stand, sell chicken dinners, subs, etc. so that’s where the money they get for all this comes from. http://www.newoxfordbands.com/uploads/6/1/6/3/6163272/9-12_band_booster_newsletter.pdf

Yes, I was right that this was their competition show. It’s for the Calvacade of Bands. Here’s a link to the routine for “The Music Of Shostakovich” which has been used by bands since 2008. No one got their panties in a wad over past bands using this routine.

As a former marching band parent, I know that directors try to find unusual themes to get noticed in the marching competitions especially themes with good music ...the movie Gladiator was a favorite theme when my daughter was in competition. However, the Russian Revolution is NOT a good theme and the band director is obviously ignorant about what went on in 1917.

“Springtime....for Stalin....in Leningrad....”

Heck when I was in the fourth grade (1957) we Army brats were comparing our dads’ Nazi war souvenirs. I thought the swastika was a kind of cool emblem & that the Wehrmacht had the snazziest uniforms in the whole war. One kid brought a German helmet to class, another a Luftwaffe dagger (!), all kinds of neat stuff. Go to someone’s house & handle Lugers and P-38 pistols.

Then one day Dad took me aside & explained just what the Nazis did to people who happened to be Jewish. Told me about a place he helped liberate called Dachau.

That was the first time I experienced pure horror. These kids need to be made to read Solzhenitsyn. They haven’t a clue about communism which lasted much much longer than the Nazi era.

My high school band (Americus GA, circa 1982-ish) was an 80 piece band that went around beating 200 piece bands at competition, so yeah, we had a little bit of attitude.

Every year we got on buses and went a few miles east to Andersonville to get our yearbook pictures taken. Bet they don't do that anymore.
