Romney mocked for comment about jet windows
La Tmes ^ | 9/24/12

During a Saturday fundraiser in Beverly Hills, Calif., which took in $6 million, Mitt Romney expressed his concerns over Ann Romney’s emergency landing on Friday. The candidate cast doubt on the mechanical design of airplane windows, in a general sense.

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous....” he said.

Why stop the hypothetical at 10,000 feet and 20 miles? Let’s place the plane on the ground and remove its passengers, crew, and cargo.

OTHER ISSUES TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT...taking a Romney campaign joke out of context, especially from the LA Times simply needs to be ignored...and not even commented on.

OBAMA....remember? Anybody but Obama...

When do the X-Factor and American Idol threads start???

HEY, LA TIMES! Let's focus on this, okay?

I mean, we don't need to talk about the fact that Obama called the death of four Americans, including the United States Ambassador to Libya, A FREAKIN' "BUMP IN THE ROAD".

Why, then, you'd actually be doing real reporting.

And we know you simply cannot have that, you Press Pravda bastards.

At 10-12K feet most people can breathe okay.

When an airliner has a depressurization, they do an emergency descent to this altitude.

When an airliner has one of it’s aircon packs fail, it is typically limited to 25K feet for any flights, so that it can get down to 10K feet in time if the second pack fails.

The altitude limit of some airliners is not set because the plane can’t fly any higher, it’s set because the plane can’t get back down to breathable air fast enough in the event of a pressurization failure.

Yes, it was a joke. Everyone in the crowd laughed.

Figures. The LA Times. The Pravda Press.

The American Media is completely, 100% Soviet-ized. This is exactly what it was like to live in Russia and have Pravda and Isvestia as your news sources.

Exactly.

That is what they did in this case. Getting down that fast is not always possible.

There is also an escape hatch on the cockpit roof of some airliners, most notably the 747 series. Here it is being used to help clean the windshields.

The plane must meet the rules for descending to 10-12K feet in a short time, or it will not be certified to carry passengers.

I would not have enjoyed being on that aircraft. Declaring an emergency, smoke in cabin... can you imagine the descent from 40k? I’m afraid they would have to pry my butt cheeks loose from the seat with the jaws of life when the thing rolled to a stop.

And just as in the soviet union, political dissidents sometimes are killed by the regime. Just that the rot is global now, nowhere to run to.

The time it can take to get from 10,000 feet to safely landed at an airport is the luxury..

OK I give in; that really IS a gaffe.

What is he going to say next? Opening windows in submarines?

We're going to need lots and lots of Science advisors for the next administration.

But not nearly as many as the current 60 IQ Bunch.

"There was a team of Obama people speaking to Mr. C. (engineer, automotive experience of 40+ years, and Chairman of CAR). They were explaining to Mr. C. that the auto companies needed to make a car that was electric and liquid natural gas (LNG) with enough combined fuel to go 500 miles so we wouldn't "need" so many gas stations (a whole other topic). They were quoting BTUs of LNG and battery life that they had looked up on some website.
Mr. C. explained that to do this you would need a TRUNK FULL of batteries and a LNG tank as big as the car to make that happen, and that there were certain laws of physics that prevented them from...
The Obama person interrupted and said (and I am quoting here):
"These laws of physics? Whose rules are those? We need to change that."
(Some of the others wrote down the law so they could look it up later.)
"We have the congress and administration. We can repeal that law, amend it, or use an executive order to get rid of that problem. That's why we are here, to fix these sort of issues."

.......And these are the people who are going to fix healthcare. And stop the rising oceans; and have all koranimals worldwide singing Kum-ba-ya, if only the 'Great Uniter had one more term... or three or four!

Stupid Daily Kos commenter says Mitt wants to open the window at 35,000 feet and get a taste of that 500 mph wind. That’s the groundspeed, Bozo. The “wind” would be the least of the problems. Who’s the idiot here?

Bet he was thinking of the forced landing his wife’s plane made and his comment came from wondering why the windows don’t open in case of emergency (on the ground) like bus windows.

I have.felt the same way when encountering turbulence in private jet or commercial.

I just think “Wish the window coukd be opened if we crash. Sure would save me the trouble of fighting over the top of everyone else and trying to push the confused person out of the way, who can’t seem to fighre out how to open the door and toss on a seat....”

Yep. Escape over a wing. My fear is the engines will still be turning...
