Fast & Furious: the fingerpointing begins

Story here. Part of the upcoming IG report leaks, and it blames the local US Attorney and ATF office. They, in turn, point the finger at Washington:

"Both men recall a detailed briefing Voth delivered to senior ATF and DOJ staff in Washington on March 5, 2010. In a Power Point presentation, attended by at least two deputy attorneys general, Voth explained how the operation was run and how almost two-dozen largely unemployed men bought 1,026 assault weapons with $650,000 in just over four months, then smuggled the guns to Mexico while under surveillance.

"Following the briefing ... Mr. Voth received accolades from his superiors. No one in ATF leadership or at Main Justice raised any concerns with Mr. Voth about the direction of the investigation. If anything, they were encouraging him," Voth attorney Joshua Levy said.

Attorneys for the three contend that the report's conclusion that the strategy for Fast and Furious was hatched in Phoenix is not true. MacAllister's attorney claims that it was "part of the overall ATF Southwest Border strategy to deal with an international criminal enterprise engaged in firearms trafficking.""

Exactly, another missing document?

The IG report was nothing more than dragging brush across tracks and circling the wagons. Blame the bottom feeders and provide more cover for Breuer and Holder.

Breuer/Holder/Napalitano/Obama LIE —— Border Patrol Agents DIE.

I still have no idea what this was all about. Sell the guns...and then what? Can anyone clue me in? I know the feds are boobs, but I thought they at least had plans to screw up. Unless this was a blatant attempt to blame US sellers for across the border violence, I have no idea what was the point. If it was what I just said, what was their cover story?

obama & the media were pushing the idea that most of the weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels came from the US. Thus more government regulations were necessary. Obama’s idea was to make sure that some US guns were found in Mexico.

Does the House of Rep’s Sgt-at-Arms operate a swat team? Is there still a functional jail cell within the bowels of the Capitol building?

I think an early-morning visit to “DoJ” HQ would be advisable.

The idea was to put as many US sourced firearms as possible at crime scenes in Mexico. The “administration” some years ago was trumpeting 90% US weapons in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. That was 90% of the weapons which were traced. They leaned heavily on only tracing weapons which really did come from the US. Vast numbers of other weapons were not included in the tracing.

More reasons to chop away more pieces of the 2nd Amendment.

Okay, but like I said in that case what was the cover story? Or didn’t they think that far ahead?

There was no public cover story. It was not to have gone public in the way it did. This would not have gone public at all, if Brian Terry had not been killed and two (perhaps a third) weapons at the site been linked to F&F.

That was the point at which the wheels came off the wagon. It has been a slow process of chipping away at the stone wall ever since.

I can’t see lower level ATF&E taking the blame for this. Nor can I see it really having originated at lower levels. Field agents would not have the gonads to initiate something like F&F on their own. How would you explain this to your supervisor after the fact?

In my opinion, this goes to Holder at least, perhaps all the way to the top. If they get four more years to cover their tracks, the truth will never see the light of day on this one.

Given the facts that the operation was actually run out of the office of the U.S. Attorney (Dennis Burke) and involved the cooperation of the FBI and DEA, you can safely assume that somebody higher up in the DOJ authorized it.

And given that both the State Department and Homeland Security were involved, as well, strongly suggests the authority came from even further up the ladder.

In my admittedly less than humble opinion, the US Feral (spelling intentional) Government has become an invading and occupying force.

The cover story appears to amount to a.) it was a "botched operation" and b.) it was the idea of lower level personnel all along.

You can put "it was a botched operation" alongside "it was the video they were protesting".
